<font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff">MOUNTED ARCHERS</font>
<font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff">The strength of the Mughal
cavalry on the battlefield lay in the combined employment of heavy cavalry in
the centre and mounted archers on the flanks. In the tactic called 'taulqama'
mounted archers wheeled around the enemy, firing volleys of arrows - which had
to be done repeatedly from 250 metres - to weaken the enemy.</font>
<font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff">Mounted archers had a pre-eminent role in winning battles for the early
Mughals. However, employment of these archers was far from easy. This skill not
only required excellent horsemanship, but also the capacity to construct,
maintain and use the small but effective composite bow. All of these talents 'combined'
were only present in the Turkish horse-warriors from Central Asia - many of
them endowed with a semi-nomadic lifestyle and a long-time practical experience
with horses. Although India did have archers of its own, horse archery never
was very prominent because the tradition of nomadic horse-breeding was not very
common. Besides, native Indian bows were of lesser quality, had lesser range and poorer
penetration than those of the Mughal/Mongol bows. </font><font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff"></font>
<font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff">A horse archer typically gallops down long
tracks at high speeds. The archer mainly controls his horse with his knees, as
he needs both hands to draw and shoot his bow. As he approaches a target, he
brings his bow up and draws the arrow past his ear before letting the arrow fly.
It takes a lot of skill and great amount of practice to be able to
travel at high speeds and aim and shoot arrows accurately, at the same time.</font><font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff"></font>
<font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff">Therefore, for an army, losing a skilled horse-mounted archer was a
particularly long-term loss, since it was very difficult for armies, to train someone up to the same level of
expertise.</font><font size="3" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" color="#0033ff"></font>
<font color="#0033ff" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" size="3">All in all, mounted archery was not a technology that could be easily
adopted. It was a highly specialised discipline that required the highest
levels of horsemanship and archery. With the advent of firearms, the
decline of thehorse archerdisrupted the tacticalbalancethat had prevailed during most of theMughalera.</font><font face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" size="3">~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~</font>
