Thank you very much for the beautiful chapter you created, well timed for my Monday morning commute.
Awww hope it made for a good commute!
It was a very interesting world you created in this chapter- a microcosm of strong women, a world that is rare to find in a historical setting. It is not only your lead sisters that are strong, but also the women that surround them which is my take 5 theme for today.
Here goes my favourite word 'microcosm' - but I never realised that the women around them appeared very individual too!
1. And we start with Bindiya, who armed with a bit of weak urdu, defends her "honour" both in fairness of deal as in words. Even Ratan Kaka finds himself helpless in front of her. She would later be tongue tied only in front of Harka, when the long list of excuses in her mind evaporated into a sheepish smile and apology.
Loool... while I never imagined Bindiya to be the 'strong' type, you have me sold on a few of her qualities!
2. As a contrast to the headstrong Bindiya, is the instinctive and measured Gauri. Her instinct told her that Bindiya had landed herself in trouble, ensuring they received timely help. I definitely see her as a rock to Harka in the future. However, as serious and dutiful as she is in the surface, there was a sense of humor not far away to join Dhani and Bindiya who were teasing Harka about the man of her dreams.
Gauri is another lady I love... and for precisely the reasons I've underlined!
3. Bringing us to Dhani, the mischievous one. You seem to tell us less about Dhani than the other girls but yet we can sense she likely will lighten proceedings in the coming future as she constantly asks Harka about her dream Kunwar.
Of course, we need a mischief-maker now, don't we? And I guess she fills the blanks... I guess today we'd call her the 'life of the party'
4. Then we come to the center of gravity of this microcosm, the two sisters, beginning with the blazen sun of the two- Durga. We continue to see her strength and outward display of it - from how she goes horseback riding with her fiance to how she refuses his support to deliver the farmaan and even goes against his advice to do her duty. Her strength is outward and shines out like the sun.
Yes... she is in every sense the 'head' of a clan
5. By contrast, Harka's strength seems like the cool moon - seemingly in the shadows of the sun, but able to step out on its own (as I had mentioned last week). In this chapter, we see Harka's strength in many ways - the way she saved Bindiya with tact while treating her adversary with respect to her intelligence and knowledge to her staying back to keep her mannat for the Mahapuja. At the same time, she was also a teenage girl at heart who was also awaiting her dream kunwarsa and pulled her compansions' legs back on the same topic.
Awww my favourite, Harka I daren't add anything to the beauty your words have weaved!
There was something very beautiful about this microcosm ... a bubble of strength and energy and positivity ... that had survived amidst the kings, courtiers, and Mughal rulers around them. Yet, this microcosm will be disrupted soon ... I will not jump to any conclusions till I read the next chapter.
👏 Loved how you've realised and explained it here... that era where women were restricted to zenanas and harems, was a difficult one to carve out their personalities so the world could see... I guess that's why the strong women of yesteryears have impacted us such!
For now, thank you writer-e-khaas for drawing me into their beautiful world.
