Chapter 14

Sam once again found herself in front of the mirror, this time preparing to welcome her family that she found in the past. The news had come to her a week ago. Lakshmi had come bounding into her room, panting and smiling at the same time.

"God, Lakshmi," Sayma said to the bent figure of Lakshmi as the amid tried to catch her breath, "What kind of a mad dog is chasing you, huh?"

Lakshmi straightened and rolled her eyes, "I bear good tidings."

Sam gave a dramatic gasp. "Dracula," she couldn't help but spit the name in hatred, the name that she had given 'her husband' - really a fitting name since the man seemed to have nothing batter to do than suck people's blood, figuratively, of course - "has finally decided to hang himself. Please say that is it. Honestly that would be a big favour to the world."

Lakshmi swatted at her arm, knowing the significance of that name, after, of course, a painstakingly long explanation from Sam about the most famous vampire in the world. "Do not jest about such things. He is your husband."

Sam snorted. "In his wet dreams maybe. We all know this farce of a marriage is nothing but a compromise."

Lakshmi sighed. "I won't argue with you." And then her eyes lit up as if she remembered something and she smacked herself lightly in the forehead, turning to glare at Sam. "See? You made me forget all about the news for a moment."

Sam opened her mouth to speak but Lakshmi held up a hand to stop her. "Let me speak." And then she paused for a moment as if in anticipation, Sam looking at her curiously, before speaking, "Your father and brother are coming to Agra with after wedding gifts."

And thus dropped the seemingly harmless bomb.

One would think she would be buzzing with excitement at the chance of meeting her family after coming to Agra. But, truthfully, she wasn't feeling what a girl should be feeling at such a time, meeting her family after her wedding. A girl in her situation should be jumping up and down in joy at the thought of seeing the family she left behind in marriage. But Sam? Nuh-uh.

Sure, she was happy that she would see some familiar faces in this hellhole again and she was looking forward to meeting her fa- King Bhairav again, who was coming with his sons. But she wasn't feeling the ecstasy that was customary for a newlywed bride. In fact, Lakshmi was more excited than her. Her brother, Raksh, was coming with the royal entourage from Malwa, since he worked as a cupbearer for the middle Prince of Malwa, Rajan. At least something good was coming out of this ridiculous ritual. But she was more concerned, and angry as well, with the confrontation she had after Lakshmi told her the news.

Sam opened her mouth in reply to what was the happiest thing she had heard in this god forsaken place in the two weeks that she had been here when the door guard spoke, "Hoshiyar, Shahenshah padhar rahe hai," and made Sam want to facepalm. After that incident in the bathhouse she and Shahenshah had avoided each other. She didn't what made her do it. She should have been angry with the guys for trying to sneak a peak of her in her running clothes, which she haf ordered the tailor to make and showed her specifically how to make it. Instead, she felt cocky enough to wink at him just before the curtains closed.

After that, through some mutual unsaid agreement, they decided to leave each other alone for the time being. She didn't know about Shahenshah, but she surely needed some time adjust here and it was difficult enough without his constant attempts to humiliate her. She knew that the calm was temporary. It was only a matter of time before he picked up his mission to make her life hell all over again.

And it seemed the time had come. The momentary lull that she had gotten from the constant nagging was shattered like a piece of glass as the monster of her real life came barging through the door with an expression that was a mixture of smugness and anger on his face. More anger than smugness, though.

"Leave us," He growled as soon as he came close enough to talk. The maids and servants bowed and scurried off like rabbits with their head down. Sam rolled her eyes. Man, they really were afraid of the guy. Except Lakshmi. She looked at Sam with her eyebrows raised enquiringly, asking a silent question. Sam gave a minute nod, at which Lakshmi smiled and walked out the door.

Sam turned to Shahenshah and crossed her arms below her breasts. "What?"

The man scoffed. "Your arrogance knows no bounds."

Sam shrugged and, just to be a jerk to the guy, said, "True."

"So you really do want me dead. And strange name you have given me." He said with a slight tilt of his head.

Sam frowned. "Were you eavesdropping on us?"

"What if I was?" The man asked, not the slightest bit embarrassed.

Sam shook her head. "You are impossible."

"Watch it there, Begum," he smirked at her. "Your arrogance will be your undoing. If you do not curb your attitude, I will not put up facade of a happy relationship with you."

Sam frowned, confused. "Why would you need to put up a facade?"

Shahenshah's face mirrored he own confusion for a moment before he composed himself and that infuriating smirk returned. "Well, I presume you do not want your parents to see how miserable you are here since it will hurt them. You Rajvanshis are quite noble that way."

"Where on earth did you get that idea?" She asked. "My 'parents' bargained me off to a cold-hearted person like you to save their country, and I agreed, reluctantly, might I add. There was no way this was going to be a happy marriage. We all knew that from the start."

The man, for once, stood astounded. Sam did not give him a chance to say anything and continued her rant. "This was a marriage of convenience and politics. Happiness had no factor in it. Gods know we hate each other like poison. Anyone who doesn't see it is blind. Why would my parents get the idea we went from hating each other to happy married couple in a month? Besides, even if they were concerned about whether my marriage is happy or not, I would not want to hide the truth. I am in one piece and your balls haven't been cut off in an attempt to rape me. I'd say, that's more than enough. Truth be told, I wasn't even hoping for this much."

As she finished her rant, Shahenshah looked at her wide eyed for a moment, before he threw his head back and let out a loud, full bellied laughter. "You are something else, Princess."

Sam rolled her eyes. "Tell me about it," she mumbled. But Shahenshah continued like she hadn't said anything. "You sing the most bizarre yet beautiful song, you mock me with a sign of respect, you look at me in the eye when you should be shying away, you do not let me touch you yet you flaunt your body, and now ... you shoot the reality at me like an arrow. I have endured it. Question is, can your parents?"

Sam scoffed, knowing what he meant. "If they cannot accept the consequences of their decisions, then they do not deserve to be Rajputs."

"Very well," he nodded with an expression that made Sam's guts twist. It was the same expression he had gotten when he had 'asked' her to sing in front of the whole court. "This should be fun."

"It's time," Sam was brought out of her thoughts by Lakshmi. "The entourage is nearing the palace." She nodded and stood up, sweeping past the maids, Nirja and Lakshmi trailing behind her.

It took her a while to reach the welcoming party. Shahenshah was already there, with his mother and Maham Anga, and a few soldiers. Just in time too. The palace gates opened just as she reached Shahenshah, who tilted his head towards her in acknowledgement, with a curious lack of mocking in his face. It only made her apprehension increase.

She looked away from him to see King Bhairav leading the entourage, with his three sons flanking him. After reaching a respectful distance, they got off their horse and Shahenshah walked forward to greet them with a smile. And so did Sam. They met halfway. Sam folded her hands and bowed her head. "Pranam." She greeted them, without adding any title, either father or King.

From the look of disappointment on King Bhairav's and his sons' faces, they noticed it too. Shahenshah smirked and threw out his arms in a welcoming gesture. "Welcome to Agra, King Bhairav. How do you like my beloved Begum's new home?"

Sam frowned. What the hell was this guy playing at? She had made it clear that she did not want to ... it dawned on her as she noticed the smug look on his face. So this was what he had been planning. He was doing the exact opposite of what Sam had wanted. And now she would have to keep up the charade too. It would look too bad on her otherwise. A wife who isn't happy even when her husband is so loving. Damn it.

She barely managed to hide her anger. She had played right into the man's hands. And Gods she hated it. She hated him. Clenching her fist, she managed a smile for the audience. Two could play the game.

The man smiled again, this time genuine enough to almost make her believe it. The guy could act. She would give him that. As the King greeted back, Shahenshah nodded his acceptance. "You must be tired. Come, the servants will show you to your chambers. You must rest. We will have a small celebration tonight in honor of your arrival."

'Oh joy,' she thought as her family was led towards the guest wing by the servants, 'Another celebration. If he tells me to sing again, I will break his f**king nose.'
