The farmers had assembled together in Rathtala of the Balarampur village to hold a meeting.
The coolies from the nearest railway stations had come to increase the glamour of the meet and some of the famous men from Kolkata also were present to deliver their dialogues on the inequality that's prevailing in the recent times. Many proposals were accepted and dealt with and after that with the cheering of Vandemataram the crowd finished the meeting that day.
Balarampur is quite rich in the name of a village. A small part of the Bhagirathi river has touched its boundaries and continued to flow from there for many centuries. The richest man of the village is Humayun Mukhopadhyay. When the crowd cheering Vandemataram was passing through the road in front of the large white building of the Mukherjee's, a tall, fair young man was viewing the scene in absolute quietness.

When he was seen by some of the leaders from the crowd, he slowly slowly went behind the huge white pillars of the building. Some from the crowd asked, "Who was he?"
The reply came is hushed voices, "Surya babu".
-"Who's Surya? Is gaon ka zamindar?"
Someone from the crowd answered in positive.
The leaders from Kolkata, did not pay any heed to that and said whil ignoring the whole issue, "oh! This was the matter."
And the moment after that, their loud voices cheering Vandemataram was heard again.
But this time the crowd went silent. The two or three from the huge crowd, who sang with the leaders, their feeble voice also lacked the force - whether it crossed the balcony and reached Surya's ears were not known.
The leaders from Kolkata felt humiliated and shouted frustratingly, "He's just a small village zamindar and you all are afraid of him. They are our real enemies. They have sucked our blood for a long time. Our main motive is to pull them down from their powers. They are..."

The heated lecture was interrupted. Their piercing arrow like words were ready for shooting but it was halted midway. Someone from the crowd slowly said, "his elder brother".
- "Whose?"
A young man of twenty five or twenty six, who was carrying the flag and was leading the entire crowd, returned back and said, "He's mine elder brother." The irony was this that it, was the eagerness, enthusiasm, effort, and monetary supply of this young man, that the programme was being held that day.
- "oh!... yours! So you are also the landlord of this village?"
The man lowered his head in utter shyness...

This much for the prologue...
Hope you'll will like it...
it's the exact English translation of the novel...
Character Sketch is given below...
Hope you'll like that also...
Enjoy reading,

SURYA NATH MUKHERJEE
The zamindar or landlord of Balarampur village.. An extremely well educated man, with an extremely good physique, this man forms the parallel lead of the story. He's a very good elder brother, loves his wife, son, step mother and brother very much.
In other words, the main pillar behind the Mukherjee household.
-------------------------------
MOTI
She's Surya's wife. A proper housewife who loves her family very much. She is not so well educated but was married to Surya in her childhood. Her closest friend in the Mukherjee household is her brother-in-law Jalal Mukherjee.

JALAL
Younger step brother of Surya Nath
Mukherjee and also the youngest
member of the Mukherjee household.
Very much interested in the Swadeshi
movement. Wants to free India from
the clutches of British. Closest
companion in the Mukherjee
household is sister-in-law Moti.
Can not deny if she asks for anything.
-------------------------------
JODHA
Lives in Bombay, cousin sister of Moti. She's a very modern woman who doesn't believe in the prevailing caste system. She's such a woman who loves to break the society's rules.. like wearing sandal in those times when women didn't wear it. A very much egoistic woman who cannot tolerate any type of humiliation.

HAMIDA
A pious lady who is the eldest in the Mukherjee household. She is the step mother of Surya and the biological mother of Jalal. A lady in her early thirties, who hates her youngest son's Swadeshi spirit and is fully dependant on her elder son. She doesn't discriminate between her own son and her step son. She looks after her daughter-in-law as her own daughter. She's a strong believer of the caste system and denies to be even touched by those who have given up their caste.
-------------------------------
ANNADA
Her character will be introduced later in the story. She is the housekeeper of the Mukherjee's house in Kolkata. More than a mother figure to Jalal, she loves both Surya and Jalal as her sons.

A NOTE FOR READERS
The caste system in India is a system
of social stratification which
historically separated communities
into thousands of endogamous
hereditary groups called jtis,
usually translated into English as
" castes". The jtis are thought of as
being grouped into four varnas:
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and
Shudras. Certain groups, now known
as "Dalits", were excluded from the
varna system altogether, ostracised as
untouchables.
Mukherjee's in this story belongs to the highest cast Brahmins...
In those days, going to Europe meant giving up their caste and they were almost separated from the society as a punishment...
This practice was more prevalent in villages than in the big cities...
