Is Ekta's 'Jodha Akbar' asking too much of audiences?

Now that it looks like JA has officially entered the Ekta lexicon, I wonder how I ever expected the show to stay out of saas-bahu-land. It did manage to at the start. And it then progressively meandered through uncharted territory where history and fiction have to both collide for entertainment purposes. The historical research seemed reasonably accurate. Many characters had a back story that could be backed up. But where JA has gone awry, in my opinion, is with the trademark takeover by the female protagonist. Here, it happens to be Jodha and here, I can only discuss her character.

Close our eyes, and without watching, just by reading the highlights, we know what's happening, and worse, what's going to keep happening. Add to this, we have Rajat as Jalal. Show started with such a tantalisingly good portrayal of Jalal by him. He owned the character. Paridhi as Jodha had some moments for me when she nailed the essence of Jodha. Put all this together and I had this dilemma of wanting to watch and not able to summon the enthusiasm to watch. I assume that's what has happened to others.

Jodha, as envisioned by CVs, was feisty and feisty and umm...feisty. But Paridi, in my view, managed to bring something extra. There was a dignity, some grace. Such a character also needs a strong counterpart in her husband. I cannot imagine this Jodha being happy to be in the eye of every storm, fighting every battle with words and swords, bows and arrows and then finally catching up with her husband at the epilogue stage to compare notes and hold hands. No. She would have much preferred to be able to choose her battles and leave most of the heavy lifting to the emperor. She wold have wanted the fact that her husband is the emperor of Hindustan to count in every circumstance. The royal tenor would have been maintained at all costs.

But now, alas, Ekta's Jo is a victim of the CVs brand of feistiness. Now that she is this all-in-one problem solver and champion of every cause, she has to settle for a husband who is on the periphery, disengaged, almost unnecessary to the story the CVs want to tell. They have proved that any historical figure can get the Ekta show treatment, but they have yet to prove that it's a success.

Beautiful post! Very well said! 👏
In the end of the day, if the serial portrayal is correct, I would feel bad for Jodha that she did not get a partner who was equal to her.

Today, in the show, she stands a strong woman, in a world of weak men. How much stronger she would have seemed amidst strong men!

Thanks Divya, am only repeating others's views here, I'm sure. Just had to join the chorus.

and yes, maybe the next lesson CVs can learn for their next adventure, is that - strong females need strong males. Then both become something much much greater.

The problem with this serial is no surprise factor
No matter how many villains who is villain we know Akbar cannot recognize them and their motives neither can his navratna's

Jodha will crack all cases and give akbar idea to make all laws and fight wars and will take all credit

Jodha is like superwoman or rather super man

And imagine she is defeating abul mali a luantic maniac man while great warriors with years of experience like akbar, adham khan, todrmal and atagah could not just unbelievable and alien concept

Its the same story whether benazir, nigar, au mali, sharifuudin all same story repeated

Now viewers know the story before hand and hence why just watch same repeat stories

Now if this was a jehangir or shah jahan we would have taken it as truth with pinch of salt but akbar audience cannot believe it

yes you have summed it up - No surprise factor.

if Jo is going to jump in and save everybody and everything and the sultanate week after week month after month ... how can the audience watch a story that has no twists at all now? 😆 Ok maybe I can watch once...twice and it is funny ... but after about the fifth time...

and the other problem is that I so want to watch Rajat's subtle and mature Jalal which I don't want to miss ... but now I can rest assured that even that has no scope

Beautiful post. When I watch the current episodes of JA, I feel sad about the lack of balance between the protagonists. In Hindu Shashtras, we describe the feminine energy as the potential energy and the male energy as the kinetic energy. Each have no meaning without the other. And each of them is not lesser than the other. While one is the source, the other is thr manifestation of the source. Like moon and moonlight.
I wish it was the same with Jodha and Akbar. Both being equal but not similar. The balance would have been beautiful. alas, we can't talk about balance and Ekta Kapoor in the same breath.

thanks Ela. Oh kidnapping is taking it to even 'better' levels of fiction/imagination. But then, the way the DEK has turned into such an informal place where attendees can announce baby news like a girl's day out and the emperor is again surprised... we better imagine he isn't in Agra. I thought DEK is a place where the shahenshah is most in control of what is said and done ... 🤔. anyway... this is how the show is now.

Thanks sp. Is balance such a hard thing to achieve in EK shows? Especially when imbalance makes everything look illogical and farcical. Maybe the writers don't share our views.
