When Jo says in letter "apne humare prem ko paap samjha", I guess she z speaking of her brotherly love for Suja bhaisa which she accepts on his questioning.
N she z never fully open about her feelings except mild sa confession with help of kichad n kamal!
Any reference to LOVE z regarding Suja only, I felt!
N I guess u r right aunty!
The rawdy Jalal that once existed, has vanished!
Nevetheless, before reconcilation, u want Jo to realise what he has been through bcuz of her night picnics!
Bt dear, don't u think k Jodha (all begums for that matter, except Salima) face such emotions everyday, despite fully aware of the fact that Jalal has indeed married all!
He may love just one, but he has to make love with all!
It was normal in those days, but m sure, no lady likes such situation, no matter what century!
Jalal ne bhi kabhi bear kar liya to kya bigad gaya?
This will help him understand all begums ki situation!
Thoda politics kum hoga wahan ka!
baki sultanat k kaam toh Atgaji he hi dekhane!
So his free tym can b spent in harem (kanha ex resident hojra, to b precise)!

But Mandy, I felt SRK was not upto the mark in Devdas though I like SRK very much. He never could instill pathos in the viewers which was the essence of what the character had to do. Or may be he was overshadowed by the bright and bold colours and the chamak dhamak of the movie.

Shyamala ji 😊
great post! I found more entertaining than the current track.
I agree, RT is such a power house of talent, when he is on screen I find it hard to pay attention to the other characters. I am not digging the current 😭😭 Jalal... eagerly waiting for the next tract. I would love to see introduction of Birbal, sooner the better.
looking forward Part-2
Thank you, found your post more entertaining than the current track.

If this new serial will be Ekta's production, I can assure you that it will be up to the actors to create the magic for the props and extras will be all on 'buy 1 free 2' basis, just like our JA.
SLB's Devdas...was bright, ornate and overtook the humans. I think the flaws of the actors were that they were not able to compete with the explosion of colours and sparkles all around them.

No, Tripti dear, you are wrong, presuming that it is you who wrote the part in bold. Or was it Mandy?

Anyhow, Rajat would find it a very interesting challenge to play a bitter, self-hating, self-destructive character, and he will win, and that without shedding a single tear.

Devdas is like Hamlet, a role every actor worth his salt hopes to play at some time in his career.
PC Barua, Dilip Kumar. Shivaji Ganesan, Nageswara Rao, the list is a long one. Rajat should try it too, if he gets the chance.

Also do see my response to Ash above. The best Devdas so far was Dilip Kumar, though Shahrukh tried very hard. Too hard, and it showed, though he had better support from the actresses who played Paro and Chandramukhi.

I saw Devdas in The Hague, and in the death scene, there were mutters from the (Indian) audience Jaldi marta kyon nahin hai, ghar to ja sakte the! I did not like that, but it showed that he could not hold the audience in that kind of extreme, long drawn out tragic scene.

I wrote a review of this Devdas for Rediff Movies, and here it is. Not, you will see, a flattering one!

Obsession gone wrong
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas disappoints

Shyamala B Cowsik

I could not agree more with Anshuman Rawat. Devdas is a tale of obsession gone terribly wrong.

I did not like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam [Sanjay Leela Bhansali's previous film] and his urge to exhaust every colour on the palette in the loudest, brightest tones possible. But that may be excused --- it was not a classic revisited.

When one remembers the bitter delicacy of the Bimal Roy version [starring Dilip Kumar in 1955] --- the quietude, the aching sadness so starkly portrayed without being buried under all this tinsel --- is enough to make one weep in frustration.

Sadly, it is not the three principal actors in Devdas who fail. Shah Rukh Khan does a good job in a very difficult role. In any case, no one else could have tackled this role. His flashes of arrogant harshness are excellent, and he can carry off sensuous romantic scenes effortlessly.

Madhuri Dixit, while her megawatt charm of Dil To Pagal Hai has faded, does an equally good job. As for Aishwarya Rai, Bhansali has done a masterful job of camouflaging her weaknesses as an actress in practically every scene, and of photographing her to near perfection.

It is the director who lets the actors down in this overloud confection that strains the nerves, the eyes and the ears.

However, I disagree with Rawat on one point. He writes, "Agreed the sets are out of this world and the costumes mindblowing..."

The costumes may be excellent and painstakingly styled, but they lack the aristocratic, understated elegance of the dresses of the same class of Bengalis in, for example, Satyajit Ray's Ghare Bhaire. Ray was an acknowledged master at recreating the ambience of the feudal period in Bengal. Every woman in Devdas looks like an overdecorated Christmas tree, except perhaps for Paro in the beginning. After the interval, Paro catches up with her mother and Devdas' mother in this respect.

As for the sets, they scream of ostentation --- every room has at least one hundred clashing colours in it. Vijayendra Ghatge's (Paro's husband) house has the most ghastly blue walls with plaster mouldings ever seen in Hindi films. The floor inlays in Chandramukhi's kotha will give you a headache. And Paro's house, with more stained glass than the Chartres cathedral, also has walls and decorations that avoid coordination with the stained glass.

The sets of the three houses look like some sort of space city out of a Star Wars film, and no one can imagine anyone with taste and refinement that characterised that class in that age living in such three-dimensional cardboard cutouts. Santosh Sivan in Asoka, with a much wider canvas, had managed an infinitely superior look on a fraction of the stated budget of Devdas.

I might be out of sync with the general public, but if this is what we consider to be the acme of Mumbai filmmaking, God help the discerning audience. People have no business massacring classics like this; there ought to be a law against it.

Shyamala Aunty

No aunty, I did not write that 😊.

I think Rajat would make a fabulous Devdas! However much I dislike the character,I think Rajat handles these deep, dark heroes with the true air & craft of a Master!

I also agree with you.. SRK was pathetically lacking at playing Dev.

Very well said Munni. One always wondered if Rukaiya was always allowed to be like what she is when she is at her worst. Didn't anyone teach her that it is not becoming of a royal young lady to behave such? But you have answered the question. If only HB had cared enough to do some bringing up then Rukaiya would have been different. HB was first busy hiding herself from her enemy and then spent the next half of her life lamenting that Jalal is all but lost to her due to MA and BK. Only when Jodha arrives she jumps into action...that is to do aarti pooja to this person whom she believes to be the saviour of Mughal Sultanate.
I cannot but wonder and be in shock with this woman who without further question, upon MA's suggestion that the baby is not Jalal's barged into Jodha's room and threatened to throw Jodha away; but now is willing to shout from the parapets of Agra that anyone who so much as to suggest that Jodha is not above sainthood is worse than syaitan.
Salima begum is a mysterious to me as Bigfoot is to everyone. Not sure if I should believe she has wisdom or is it something that only certain people have seen and is yet to be scientifically proven. She also seem to have contracted Jodha's Parrot Alzheimer-risis i.e. just goes on with 'you both are in love'. She is more of a shoddy love babaji than an actual wise woman.
Ruku loves Rahim and she has a lot of respect for HB. She cares for Jalal too. And I am quite sure, that despite how many don't believe this, she would have drunk the poison had it been the only way to save Jalal. I don't think she would not, for as much as she care for her position etc, she loves him too.
What is the point in all of us having our gastric juices boiling our stomach lining? In the end Jodha will win. She will come or be found, covered in some muck (strategically placed so that she still look pretty), bedraggled, exhausted and in a sorry state. Jalal will do a OTT dramatic tearful 'please forgive me Devi ma' scene. Menavati and Bharmal will stand at the sideline, beaming at what a great daughter they have, HB will start her bhahsan since Jodha will be too tired to do so, on how she was good and all others are evil. Sharifuddin will be somewhere, getting ulcers that Jodha is returned to Jalal, and BB will burst a vein. Somewhere in the far distant we hear a scream ,which will be MA who will start hyperventilating. The scene will end with a smoke covered Shaguni Bhai doing a crackled prediction that today is the new beginning.
The end

No, Sam, I was comparing Snape, who for me redefined pure love - I wept after reading The Prince's Tale and the line when the dying Snape, seeking Lily's eyes in Harry's, tells him to Look at me!- to Sidney Carton, who epitomises the height of undemanding love and self-sacrifice. I was not comparing Snape to Devdas, my dear, how could you think that?

Why Snape Aunty? I thought he had immense courage. It takes a lot to stand up to pure blackest evil and that too for hopeless unrequited love. Doesn't matter if people know about it or not.

Oh. I misunderstood. Snape and Carton both have strong characters with redeeming qualities, utterly lacking in Devdas.

How would you rate THIS Jalal by the same standards who oscillates more than the best pendulum invented by Galileo Galeili?😲🤔
