When things happen for a very long time and people see it everyday, it becomes a norm. Even the evils of the society are accepted as normal over time by people who are surrounded by them. They take it as a part and parcel of life till an outsider comes and shows them the mirror.
Same is the reason with Jalal and co.
Slavery is a norm for them. That is why there had been no correction of it earlier.
Even Sati was commonplace at that time. No less of an evil than slavery. It was constantly on mind of a woman who's husband had gone to war. Some willingly threw themselves in their husband's pyre and others were forced too. But the general public didn't bat an eye even when widows were drugged/beaten/pushed into the fire alive. It was a norm thus, nobody cared. People learn to live with evils.
In today's age, we have abolished the older evils but newer ones have gained prominence. Corruption has plagued the Indian system since time immemorial and we had accepted it as part of our life. But populist Anti-corruption wave in the country has been very recent. So, wasn't corruption a menace before all this? It definitely was but the discontent and the anger against it was brewing within only. Rise of a leader gave people hope and they latched on it.
Same as happened with Jodha in the harem issue. The begums and bandhis were oppressed by Ruqs. But they were constantly looking for an opportunity to replace her with someone more understanding. No formal complaints against her were ever lodged. But there was an anti-Ruq wave in harem.
Coming back to the slavery topic, Jalal did know about slavery prevalent in his kingdom. He had made numerous POW as slaves himself. He never gave it a thought as it was a norm to have people captured in war to be sold off. He was never introduced to it's human side and the impact it had on the person's life. He needed someone to give him an insight into this sensitive issue. But he never got one till today when Jo gave him a round of the ugly side of harem. Only a compassionate person for whom this ain't a norm would have been able to provide this moment.
