Creative freedom at the cost of history ?

Hello everyone, I do not post regularly in this forum but after reading about the protests and watching the serial personally, I feel injustice has been done to the historic characters. For example, Ruqaiyya is being shown in a bad light as a jealous and attention seeking woman. They have portrayed her as a queen who is against Jodha. I am not sure if she was like this in her own life. She might be a tolerant and benevolent woman as well.
The other time they showed Shivani's escapade with her lover. I am again unsure of its authenticity.

I know the serial has been made by putting in fictional stories from time to time. But I think the makers have taken liberty a bit far away by molding the characters according to their own whims. It cannot be forgotten that even though the show is fictional, the characters were real people living in a bygone era. Creative freedom doesn't mean you can exploit history as you wish.

Before anybody starts hating me, I would like to say that I am a big fan of this show and I watch it everyday religiously. I only wish the makers would have kept the basic character sketch and story line more closer to reality then turning it into pure fiction. I mean just imagine if Mahatma Gandhi's or Subhash Chandra Bose's or any other great men/women's lives were retold in a manner which is not true, it is bound to offend different sects of people.

Show makers should not forget that the show is watched by the people of India which mostly involves uneducated or ignorant people and to some extent kids. They will watch the show with the mindset that this an important piece of history and they should know as much as they can. They wouldn't understand the nuances or glitches in the story and hence this program will make a lasting impression in their minds. This is definitely not in the favor of people.

As much as I love the show, I do not want it to shut down and I do agree that the people who are protesting should be more tolerant and humble. But you cannot blame them in entirety because they may feel connected to the historical characters in questions and hence have every right to raise a finger. Think closely and imagine someone manipulating the story of your grandfather or ancestors to suit their business.

I wish the producers had made the show using fictional characters completely with probably the same or slightly different story-line. That way the makers and the viewers would have been more satisfied and there would have been room for absolute creative freedom. If the other shows on television work purely on the basis of good cast, story and other factors; I see no reason why Jodha Akbar wouldn't have worked as a fictional story of a king and his many queens. The present scenario has limited options when it comes to providing TRP garnering and melodramatic twists and turns which work best for the Indian television. It is rather a deterrent in the progress of the show.

Please do no get me wrong but I hope if not all but at least some of you will agree with me. I do not hold anything against the show or its makers or the artists. I absolutely love the show from the core of my heart and have its best interests in mind. I truly hope all the issues will be solved soon and the show will continue to entertain us in the near future.

I love the show as well and don't want it to go off air. . However, I do agree with the points you have made here. In fact I made a similar post not too long ago. Here is the link

Yes, there have been tracks that have irked me, and could have been avoided. Still, there is a way to to protest it.They have not shown anything illegal and immoral. It's just a name . MUZ existed, and this name is more popular. There are more serious issues in India that need attention than this . Why not march for women who get raped ? Why not for the thousands of people who are the street? The Rajput community has lost their mind.

Beautifully written. I agree with most of your points but I am also a realist. I know that very few historical serials ever made in the world follow history to the letter. Every single historical serial I have ever seen has taken creative liberties.

Besides if one is unhappy with the way a certain historical character is represented, there are peaceful means to protest, there are courts which you can approach for justice. Vandalism or forcing others to do what you want at the threat of violence is unpardonable.

The last line that you chose to write will most likely lead to the closure of this beautifully written post. What a shame... From what I understand, you have broken a forum rule by making a blanket, irresponsible, derogatory statement against a community.

Let me give you some facts since you obviously havent bothered to do your research. Karni Sena is not a synonym for Rajputs. I am a Rajput and none of the Rajputs I know support the violent acts of Karni Sena. Infact, this brings a bad name to the community and gives people like you an opprtunity to target all Rajputs. I personally sometimes do not see logic in some tracks but there are better ways to express views. Gandhiji was one of the most successful protestors in history...and never supported violence. We really cant question people's right to protest. We'll be questioning our constitution if we do that. But, this kind of violence is unacceptable...period. And most RAJPUTS DON'T SUPPORT IT.

I strongly feel that the recent events did not just happen out of nowhere. Look at the timing. They are politically mediated and possibly planned. They are being done for either power ( upcoming elections) or greed( upcoming movies). Only time will tell who are the real people behind this ugly nexus.

But, writing something like ' the Rajput community has lost their mind' is similar to ' all M...ms are terrorists'...a very common statement in western forums/ sites. Both are inflammatory, abominable and shameful. Usually made by one of the following
1. Prejudiced fanatics
2. People with an IQ of 80 or less trying hard to sound intellectual.

Hopefully, you don't belong to either catagory and will refrain from making such statements in future. Thank you!

Do you think if the show was on some fictional king and his queens people would watch this stuff?
No ways see Dharam veer etc fictional characters all did not do well
The popularity of this show is because its named Jodha Akbar if it was named some X and Y no one would watch this show. It would be a flop because story is similar to other saas-bahu shows except for some scenes like akbar going out in disguise around, adham khan taking advantage of akbar etc everything else is complete saas-bahu stuff scenes seen in every other shows
Naming it after JodhaAkbar is a publicity stunt so that people watch it in name of Akbar as people are curious to know about him and his wifes, his life

I loved JA movie...👏...dat too faced sum problems n wsnt allowed to release in a particular state bt d portrayal in d movie ws subtle n nicely done ..abt d show i hvnt watched d initial epis...i hv started watchin it jus a month or so bk...dt too nt regular...its a telly show so obv dey wud hv to drag n dt means it wud hv mre fiction den history...

the show is gd.👍🏼..bt lk u said hs sum drawbacks frm d creative side...if dey actually pay attention to all d points u mentioned der wudnt b controversy related to d show...

history is always 60-70% fact while 30-40 fictional...bt here its other way round...😳...also at times i feel weird n a bit bad dt how writers of dt time din bother to write abt d major roles played by these women in der kingdom as well as society...

all the historical figures wudnt predict on what basis dey wud b remembered years aftr dey r gone...fr instance Akbar wud hv never imagined dt he wud b remembered equally as Jodha's husband n emperor who introduced matrimonial alliance fr d 1st time in d history ...we do recall his deeds n him as an Emperor...bt aam junta associates him to Jodha equally nw a days..

kaash uss time writers ko patah rehta aage jaake Jodha Akbar love story ko itna importance milne wala hai...dey wud hv written some more things abt it...😆...

bt our fascination wid dem is on diff level all together...so at times creative liberty does get extended which m8 nt b r8 always.

..also if dey concerntrate a bit on Akbar as an Emperor n his conquests as well as wars dt wud b better...as v wud get to c sum historical facts ...as many books (akbarnama, life of mughals...medieval India etc etc) explain abt his rule n conquests much more n in detail den his personal life...which ws none of ny1s business back den in dos times...

good post..👍🏼

Thank you to all the people who have read and replied to my post. I truly hope the people protesting on the streets would take some time off to discuss the matter coolly. I mean there is always room for negotiation. Even if they manage to shut the show, they will be portrayed as the "bad guys" because of the disappointment people will face. It is always best to work in the interest of the society and to reach an amicable decision by discussing out the issues. That way both the viewers and the critics have there way ! The point that is to be remembered is that it is essentially a love story and the makers do not have any intention of hurting anyone's sentiments. I guess if they would understand how a serial works, they will be able to sort out the matter.
I truly hope the serial and Ekta Kapoor will bounce back to entertain us very soon 😊
