Thanks Shyamala. I am a die hard fan of the written word and these poets have used the word very beautifully to sing the song of 'ISHQ' aur Ishq ke liye toh hum marte hain!!!

Dear Aunty,

Last night I read your post on epi:87: The Gordian Knot

I am at a total loss of words to express how much I admire your insight into the depth of the Kali-Mandir Episode and the unparalled parallel you have drawn between the incident and that of the Gordian Knot. This is a very precious post.

When I saw the episode, I was very much impressed by Jalal's matha-tekna and believed that it was a broad-minded and magnanimous act on his part to fulfil his agonized wife's sankalp. Also I was still annoyed at Jodha's non-apologising for the narnaal-fiasco and further annoyed at her continued rant about the temple's lost glory without for a moment thinking about the inner strength and conviction he had displayed by bowing before a Hindu Idol. I had started disapproving of her character from precisely this point. Her total lack of perceptiveness and sensitivity and him being full of it made their characters such a contrast. This was not the first time either. Their respective handling of Rahim during Ruqaiya's MC was proof enough for it. But Jodha's lack of appreciation of this gallant gesture was appalling.

But you have seen' something beyond gallantry in this deed aunty... a vision for the Hindustan of his dreams, a wish of acceptance by the people by accepting them himself. It took a long time for the concept to sink into me fully when I read the post.

To us, born and brought up at a time when secularism is a part of our constitution and a very much preached and followed (mostly) practice , Jalal's matha-tekna might sound just remarkable. But when we think of it in terms of the 16th century, it was more than exceptional and extraordinary. It was a time when religion was the identity of a person. There were so many divides, even in Hinduism there wasthe Shaivite-Vaishnavite divide, the Sagunbhakthi-Nirgunabhakthi dhaaras, Raambhakthi-Krishnabhakthi dhaaras, and people belonging to individual sects found it difficult to overcome the divide and accept each other. Here is a Mughal Emperor who wanted to unite them all under one rule and wanted to be accepted by all of them whole-heartedly not as a conqueror but as their ruler. For them to blend with him, he had to blend with them first. He did cut through the Gordian Knot of discrimination and differences in one go.

That bow in submission uplifted him to great heights. What strength of mind, what purity of thoughts, and what an exceptional vision he must have had to unite the people and see the entire population of the land he wanted to rule as one and equal, and to see his God in theirs, and himself as a part of Hindustan. No wonder the whole of Hindustan saw Akbar as theirs. Whatever was the Epiphany to Akbar in reality, this scene as picturised in the serial was phenomenal. And the actor, unsurprisingly excelled.( And Aunty, the butprasti issue you predicted also followed a few episodes later)

The courage of his convictions: There is a perceptible hesitation, for no one should underestimate what this gesture costs him. What he is about to do would be taken as butparasti (idol worship), specifically forbidden in Islam. If anyone had spread the word across the Mughal sultanate that their Shahenshah had paid obeisance to a Hindu but, there would have been an uproar, and not only among the maulvis. Even decades later , when he had long been the all powerful Emperor Akbar, his initiative to found a syncretist religion merging Islam and Hinduism, the Din-e-Ilahi, had attracted widespread criticism. Now he is, as yet, nowhere near that level of unquestioned domination, so the risks are that much more.

Still, he does not hesitate, for in Jodha's troubled and angry gaze, he sees not just the woman whose acceptance he craves, even if only subconsciously as yet, whose barely veiled hostility hurts him like nothing ever before.

He sees the whole of the Hindustan that he wishes to unite under his rule, not by brute force, but thru willing acceptance. Na ki shamsheer ki dhar se, par rishton ke reshmi dhagon me piroke. To win the heart of this Hindustan, he knows now what he has to do. For them to accept him, he has first to accept them.

Jalal already has the breadth of spiritual vision, the inner clarity, that lets him see his Allah in the Devi. Not many even today, anywhere in the world, are able to do that, for all the current politically correct patter about accepting all religions. And in the 16th century, when Protestants and Catholics were massacring each other and burning each other at the stake all over Europe and in England, for the Emperor Jalaluddin Mohammed to demonstrate such purity of thought, such innate humanisn, was nothing short of a miracle.

And this is not just because of Jodha, for even if she might have been the catalyst for this specific act of his, she is not the sole motivation for it. It is about something infinitely bigger and grander, Jalal's vision for this vast land that he hopes to rule one day in peace and prosperity.

Epiphany: the Gordian knot untied:

Slowly, he goes down on his knees, his face once more upturned to the Devi's. There is the same questioning look, the mute appeal to Her. Is he asking Her whether She will accept him?

He bends down to the floor and pays obeisance to the Devi, his forehead at Her feet, and kisses the ground in the gesture of submission that is traditional for him. As he rises, his forehead is stained red with the kumkum. The Devi Maa has blessed him. His prayers have been answered. His sins, both those committed knowingly and those committed in his name, but unknown to him, have been forgiven.

In that one gesture of self-surrender to the Universal Divine, which he is able to perceive in the alien Devi Mahakali, in that act of submission to this Divine heedless of his ego, Jalaluddin Mohammed becomes Akbar.

Aunty, I read this almost half a dozen times to understand what you expressed and I think I have .

I do not know if Jodha understands the true import of this, of what he has done and why, or of what it has meant for him to do it. Imagination was never her strong point.

But what she says next, in the precap, with a resurgence of angry tears, about the despoiling of the temple and the looting of the Dev Maa's sacred aabhooshan (jewellery), seems to indicate that she does not understand. For it is in the same hostile, bitter tone in which she was earlier mentioning her sankalp. The sense of dismay with which he asks as to who had committed that shameful act conveys nothing to her, for she never has ears for the nuances in what he says, not to speak of what he means but does not say.

No hope expecting understanding from this blinkered woman to whom nothing matters more than what she believes is right, at least as of now. The day she begins to see and understand Jalal for what he is it will be enlightment for her. Even when she does, she could never equal him. If she provides him with the care he longs for, it would be more that what could be expected out of her.

Scene of the day: The relentlessly hyped face to face encounter between Jalal and Pratap. It was so stagey and affected, and so obviously meant to impress us that it was almost amusing. The wooden faced Pratap did not disappoint me, never departing from the flat monotone which characterizes all his utterances. Jalal was of course far more nuanced and subtle, but Rajat had no one and nothing to play off, and there was only so much even he could so with that scene.

Finally, I almost expected a large announcement at the bottom of the frame when they were eyeing each other : YAHAN, SHAHENSHAH JALALUDDIN AUR MAHARANA PRATAP, US SADI KE DO MAHAAN HASTIYON KA AAMNA SAAMNA HUA!

Yes it was...such a build up to such a damp face-off.🤣

Reading these posts and rewatching the episodes does bring out the striking difference in the quality then and now.

Coming to today's precap, it is exactly how I wanted it to be. I only hope that it doesn't turn out to be someone's dream.

Hi Aunty,
I am sorry for not showing up earlier.Frankly the state of the show and the forum and the majority of the posts that are floating around leave a sense of sharp distaste in my mouth and I dont even feel like logging in. Its disappointing that you cant even have a discussion anymore.

Your post is fabulously hilarious while being astute too. It goes without saying that its a pleasure to read. 👏

I think the people who frequent this thread are in a very small minority. We are craving to see something/someone I think may not really happen anymore.

I, for one, am so disgusted with the show now that I probably watch once a week and just survive of updates..when I remember to read them.

I dont even know where to start lamenting about my disgust. Like most here I dont recognize this shehenshah anymore. He is on the verge of becoming a not an enlightened but a confused Buddha. I could not believe how lightly he spoke of the bezatti today. There was a tone of sarcasm of course but really, was that dignified at all? Why would you even bring it up? what happened to quiet anger? He just told Ruqs he still remembers it all? And then he is still ogling her whenever he can. Their nok jhok makes me want to barf. This is the most unjustified unexplained unemotional 'epic' love story there ever was.

Coming to Ruqs, I think she has one of the worst best friends fate could bestow on her. He has no respect for their relationship at all. I'm appalled by how badly he treats her. I still remember the scenes between Jalal and Ruqs when smiley was around. Where did that relationship go? Is he going to forsake everyone else for the sake of Jodha just like his mother?I cannot respect a man who dump the old the minute someone new walks in. If I were Ruqs I would dumped his sorry a** a long time ago (16th century equivalent of dumping) I guess everybody pays a price for how they treat others, so he is at the receiving end of the same sort of treatment from Jodha. And Ruqs swallows everything he throws her way just like Jalal does when it comes to Jodha. I so wish he would just stick to loving from afar and wait for her to come to him.

I dont think I have ever seen a historical figure mutilated quite so badly as EK has done of Akbar.

As for Jodha, I am at a loss for words really. How shameless can one be? When you know you cannot be the wife your husband desperately needs you to be how can you constantly keep taking and taking from him? If I couldnt return the love my husband felt for me I would be overcome with guilt. At the least I would stay away from his family, unable to meet their eyes for the injustice I mete out to their son even if love is an uncontrollable reaction. I would at least wonder why I cant return his love. I would never expect more sons from his family to marry into mine in case they face the same fate. Shouldnt that at least prompt her to talk to Shivani? She is not alien to the concept of marrying for love. She almost had it with surya whats- his- name and she saw it between Sukanya and spineless prince. She herself said she cannot give herself to any man she doesn't love and mocked Jalal's love as SKL. Then why does she not ask Shivani if she can bring herself to one day love that man? Does she not realize it would be unfair to HM if he has to bear the same fate as Jalal? I dont get how highly principled Jodha cannot see this. She has ethics and morals for everyone else but not for self. I am fed up. And is Shivani to place the same conditions as her before marriage too about religion and consummation and everything else in between?

And the Ameris, dont they want their daughter married off from their own kingdom? What happened to not eating in the daughters house? Now the whole khandhaan camps for days on end at Agra. And Jalal has to get all the daughter married too! Talk about mooching.

Even if I swallow all that, I just cannot understand Jalal anymore. He really needs a spine transplant. A shehenshah cannot afford to be dumb and paralyzed in love. He is a not 21st century lovelorn school boy. Its ridiculous. Yuck!🤢

I have lost all respect for this show. I dont think they can restore Jalal at this point to the man, the king, that we all adored, even if they do I wont be convinced easily.

I swear if I have to hear anymore from Jalal do you love me, do you care for me, do you want me dialogues Jalal I am going to jump through my laptop and strangle him and the writers who are writing him like this. What is the matter with this fella, I have never been in love so someone please explain this to me is this how one acts? I don't know I don't understand his love lorn phase right now when he is so desperate to hear some magic words and Jodha forget throwing a bone his way she is only spitting his way. If he is so sure of her love and she is deliberately contradicting why can't he go about his business and wait for her to come to him. I can't wait for Shivani to blow up in Jodha face so that Jalal can finally get rid of her blahhh this is how much I am hating Jodha and Jalal scenes. There is no sincerity in them, no genuine warmth, it is all Jalal being desperate, and Jodha the ice queen. I am going to watch my dose of North and South to forget this junk of a romance.

lets face it. CVs r showing this bcoz most of the people wants it tht way. people want jalal to go behind jo, but when jo thinks about jalal or likes his attention thts a crime. if jalal gets angry on jodha bcoz of shivani's elopement he will be totally justified bcoz he had continuously asked jo & others about shivani's opinion, but acc. to jo shivani's opinion is not needed. but still people r bothered about jalal's anger over jo & worried for her. if jalal gets angry he will be only blamed. people want a puppy dog jalal & CVs r giving us tht. we belong to the minority who want a strong jalal. but the TRPs aunties want a "mahan" heroine & a "popat" hero.

aunty, the shivani elopement fiasco reminds a same incident from past where a sister causes humiliations to her brother and sister-in-law in front of the whole empire.. yes, I am talking about Bakshi Banu, she was not the main culprit but she assisted her husband in that criminal act being blind in love and did whatever shariffu asked her to do without ever thinking about her brother's emotions for once.

Here shivani is on the same way, she is also going to cause a great humiliation to Jalal, Jodha ,and the whole ameri clan.. She also has gone blind in love and can't see the right and wrong, what gonna befall on her jiji specially.

Now I want to see, if cvs grant some mercy on viewers, that when BB caused humiliation to Jodha, Jalal was blamed and he remained silent and except showing anger and questioning jodha only once that so in her room, he put up with all the blames, jodha and his mother threw upon him, he agreed to all the false allegations to protect Jo's honor until he found out the real culprit , similarly Jodha also maintains her calm and dignity this time, doesn't retort back rudely. I want to see how she proves herself innocent without retorting back, without shouting, without loosing her calm and blaming Jalal for their marriage, just like Jalal and as you said aunty Jodha couldn't feel the pain of Jalal totally as BB is her SIL but Jalal's own sister and there are a few whom Jalal loved actually, similarly I wish when shivani also betrays , Jodha at last be able to relate her pain with jalal's during BB's betrayal, when Jo tried to commit suicide, Jalal felt a connection between them, I wish this time Cvs don't waste the chance and show a self talk of Jodha where she can connect her state of mind with jalal's and finally can feel the pain and understands why Jalal still couldn't forgive BB..
