The Jodha Begum, as portrayed in the the serial, is one big bundle of vanity, self-righteousness, impertinence, insolence and smugness that any man, (let alone an emperor who has the world under his feet) would like to stay as far away as possible. Ever since the Meena Bazaar and especially after the tiger attack, I've never been able to relate with her character.

You can admire flawed characters in fiction and screen, but not if they are proud of their shortcomings or if they are glorified for their flaws too. You can relate to Scarlett O'Hara with all her imperfections and limitations that detour to the domains of what by normal standards is beneath morality norms. But not this Jodha Begum.

And what was there to reform in Jalal? Even before he married this piece of perfection(!), he was fair minded, he respected loyalty, was forgiving to the king who saved his father, was people loving and reprimanded AK in Malwa. After his Khan Baba was out of the picture, nothing remained to reform much. All that was needed was some fine-tuning and how was that possible with this Jodha Begum who is so much out of tune herself.

I too have never been able to understand why Jalal is so smitten by her and why he tolerates all her offensive behaviour as though he had sinned her to such an extent that he had to feel such remorse to sleep in peace. What has she done do reach the high perch that she has been placed in, except speak, cry, speak, lecture to Jalal, speak, grina Jalal, speak, pray to her Kanhaa, speak, misunderstand Jalal, speak, insult Jalal, speak and speak?

I had written on the other thread that if Jodha saw only lust in Jalal's eyes on the night he confessed his feelings to her, she needs an optician and a psychiatrist. Just the same, if Jalal can see only goodness and hunars and virtues and nobility in Jodha always (even when she is volleying insults at him), he also needs consultation with the aforesaid specialists.

And the recent tracks, lesser said the better. Like the ratri vyatit vachan that everyone eventually accepted to be the absolute truth, now the place to Jalal's left in the court is also acknowledged by one and all as Jodha's undisputable right. While every one in Agra is so sensitive to Jodha's rights and Jodha's feelings why does no-one give a thought about Jalal's rights and Jalal's feelings(including himself)?

Anyway, all the tracks and all the characters are getting crankier day by day. The only reasons I continue watching the show is that I admire Rajat's performance very much and am hooked to Shyamala Aunty's posts, that are a pleasure to read.
