This is indeed one of the best analysis of Jalal character that I have read so far. One of the reasons I admire him is because is was so ' human' and so 'flawed'...yet a masterpiece creation of God.
We often jump to conclusions and start bashing him if he is mean to Jodha...on the other hand, we start calling him a ' weakling' or a 'poodle' If he is nice to her... If you closely observe people with type A personalities, most of them are like him. Whether he is with or against Jodha, he is the one in control...he is a perfect politician. He does not mind looking like a fool in order to achieve what he wants. At the same time, he does not compromise on his principles or give up his ambition for anyone, including Jodha.I'll quote two examples from recent epis.
1. Jodha- Rukaiya showdown- he called Salima to settle the issue...he understands these three women very well and got what he wanted without much drama. Do you really think that he himself could not have come up with the 'brilliant' idea of playing Chaugaan inside the palace premises. But he chose Salima to say what he wanted to say...had he said the same thing, both begums would have been dissatisfied for their own reasons. Now, if they hold any grudges( which they dont), it will be against Salima, not him. I think Jodha saw through that...thus called him ' chatur' and 'chaalaak'...in fact, he made Salima happy too...you naughty boy...hope you find your match soon. When is Birbal going to make his entry?
2. Now this is a different aspect of his personality...he craves Jodha but is not ready to forgive her beloved brother for committing a war crime. I was impressed how shrewdly he made her say that it was ok to punish her brother if he was wrong...when she tried to tell him that her brother is not capable of doing something like that...he gave good arguments to tell her that her view is colored by her love for her brother...she was speechless. He loves her and wants to be close to her, yet he wants to be the one in control. He is not bending backwards on important issues for anyone... A strong and confident man. This is when he is barely 22... Wait till he is 40.

Kshithi I am in such mad rush today, just got 10 mins and read your posts and somehow found time and had to write this!

You are a super super writer. I loved your post and I agree. I never agreed with any posts which called Jalal dumb and poodle. The CVs made Jalal act so dumb in Ben saga that it stretched our nerves. I wonder how much of that track duration was due to Rajat's foot injury?

I find Akbar fascinating because not just what he became but where he started from. He became ruler at age 13 and was under the control of Behram Khan and MahamA. Both of whom were so arrogant, intolerant and cruel, vicious people. They certainly had their own agendas too and would have fiercely guarded access to Jalal - so the influences HE got apart from these two he would have got on his own, inspite of them.

HE had every reason to become an Aurangzeb from this kind of upbringing, that he turned into AKBAR is just a marvel!

While Auranzeb who had every reason and opportunity to become an Akbar - all the influences around him - but he chose to turn into Aurangzeb instead.

I can write 10 more paras but have to rush so hope to continue later.

Love
Maddy

Thanks Cleo.
Both examples are great and explained well. Especially, second one.. he makes Jodha not only say, but accept that her brother needs to be punished. At the same time prepares her for a time when she may have to choose between him and her brother. He wants her absolute loyalty.
He waits for the right time to take ruq to task. Or MA. Whyhas he not talked about ben with ma and ruq? is it because he is a man in love and hence could not concentrate on anything other than jodha. Or he is waiting for the right opportunity?
Do you think he has not noticed the growing hatred in ruq and ma towards jodha?

In my earlier post I had tried to explain the influence of bairam khan and ma on jalal. Only when bk is killed that he stared coming onto his own.

Thanks Maddy. 😊
Jalal started showing his true nature only after bk's death. You are so true and matches what I had written earlier. Please go through the previous post on jalal Whenever you are free. I have given the link in this post itself.

He is strong man to have changed himself and come onto his own, in spite of bk and ma's influence. His ambition to become the greatest emperor did not change. But he found new avenues and paths towards that goal.

Kshithi

Kshithi,

Thanks for creating this post. Much needed to re-live why we love Jalal so much.

I think till date Ratanghar fort is my fav of how Jalal showed he called the shots and was in control.

I hope we see the same brilliance with the Sujamal track!
