Growth and evolution happen only when change happens. And it's about time TV channels and producers began supporting content that is new and risky, but ups the ante. The good news is that audiences inevitably do rally around " maybe not overnight, but in time. But even in the wasteland of Hindi shows, sometimes there are a few serials that stand out. Jodha Akbar (Zee) is one of them. The show took time to come into its own but then it hit its stride and is now worth watching. The antagonistic relationship between Akbar and Jodha is the heart of the show and their scenes together sparkle. I like the dialogues too. The palace intrigue can get a bit tiresome but since this is an Ekta Kapoor show, you reconcile yourself to it (however, it's impossible to reconcile oneself to the soundtrack which comes on every time the villainess, Mahamanga appears on screen; a female voice intones Mahaamaanga.' Seriously? Wasn't that done over 10 years ago in Kasauti Zindagi Kay?) And costume dramas based on historical legends should try to avoid battle scenes altogether. The sight of a few bored-looking soldiers lethargically waving their swords at each other is more comical than dramatic. But still. Anything that's better than usual is welcome.
