Akbar and the love struck girl

Once, Emperor Akbar was sitting in a mosque, reading the Koran(which he knew by heart). He posted his guards before the mosque because he wanted absolute peace. At some point during his reading he glanced out the window and saw a young woman running desperately back and forth. She seemed to be looking for someone or something.

Suddenly, this young woman entered the mosque and began to search. In her desperation to find whatever she was looking for, she did not see the emperor and tripped over him as he sat, bumping him so hard that the Koran flew out of his hands and landed on the floor. The women who bumped into him immediately got up and ran off outside the mosque without telling anything.

Akbar was furious that someone first bumped into him and did not bother even to apologise that he called for his guards: "Bring me that young woman!"

When the guards brought the woman before him, Akbar was furious: "Before I have you hanged, tell me what you were so preoccupied with that you did not even notice when you ran over me. "

The woman shook with fear to hear her death sentence. But then she collected herself and said: "My dear emperor, please excuse me, but I was searching for my lover. I had heard that he had come to town, and because I love him, I was so fixed on finding him that I was looking everywhere without seeing anyone or anything else. I did not mean to offend you."

This made Akbar even angrier: "How dare you disturb me while I am reading the holy Koran! Looking for a lover! Hang her immediately!"

Since she had nothing left to lose, the young woman spoke out: "Dear emperor, may I ask you whether you were actually reading the Koran? If I am so attentive to searching for my lover"who is, after all, merely a mortal man"that I cannot see anything or anyone else, how much more fixed would you be if you were actually searching for the supreme lover, God? If you had actually been reading the Koran, you would not have noticed my tripping over you. So I think you were not actually reading but were only making a show of it!"

Akbar saw the woman's point and set her free.

Jehangir tomb
Jehangir tomb is in lahore some 9Kms from anarkali tomb and market. Some pictures of the nice designs inside(though its not kept well). Since Jehangir loved flora and fauna its filled with such tiles. If anyone has visited Humayun tomb, Taj mahal the calligraphy is very similar although i find colorful tiles lined inside.
It was Jehangir's last wish to be buried at lahore although he was suggested to have his last resting place at agra/delhi/kashmir near his parents or grandfather tomb or the place he loved most on earth kashmir.
How did he die?
It is said that the immediate cause of his death was provoked by the death of a young servant on his summer trip to Kashmir. This young servant was trying to gather game for the king when he went a bit too far over the cliff and fell off. Jehangir, who could watch the most inhuman tortures performed on his enemies without as much as blinking his eye, could not suffer to see a faithful servant meet his death in his service. He fell into a stupor and never recovered. He died of alcohol excesses and a heart attack in 627 AD (1627) at age of 57.

An elder brother's love and an younger brother's hatred

Aurangzeb during and after winning the war of succession always referred to his elder brother as an enemy even in his letters to Shah Jahan and Jahanara(archives are available in museum).
But what did Dara Sukoh feel for his younger brother? Was it hatred or love towards an younger sibbling? Here are a few instances of his love for an younger brother who treated him like an enemy from childhood with hatred and mistrust.
Once Dara Sukoh built a palace on the banks of Yamuna river and invited all his siblings to show them around the new palace. Shah Jahan and all his sons and daughters went to see the newly built palace. Dara took them to a room in the lower level of the palace and they had dinner and enterainment there. But aurangzeb who was suspicious of his elder brother sat outside the door as if guarding it despite Shah Jahan's insistence on coming inside and enjoying the ocassion.
In the war for succession when Dara Sukoh was fleeing persecution from Aurangzeb he met the the Sikh Guru and told him that he only wanted to free his father, sister and other brothers from persecution by Aurangzeb's forces and had no desire for the throne.
In the war for succeession on war field Dara Sukoh's army commander and soldiers were raising "Shah Sujah, Aurangzeb murdabad" slogans and death on them. But Dara Sukoh told them not to do so saying "Let us not wish death to any one. That is base. All of us have God's breath in us. In any case.We live and have our being With his grace".
Again on another war for succession his commanders told him that all Rajput army is with him and he shall definetly be the next emperor. So Dara Sukoh commented "My friend if God thinks my younger brother Aurangzeb is more deserving to be an emperor than me and that it will help people of this sultanat, i will be more than happy to see him as the emperor. I have nothing personal against my brother".
There are many instances when Shah Jahan was angry with Aurangzeb for his follies and had dismissed him from service as Subhedar/Governor but it was Dara Sukoh and Jahanara who always pleaded with him to give Aurangzebb's responsibilities back.
But auranzeb never realized his folly and always hated Dara Sukoh to such an extent he destroyed all royal records and pictures of his brother and even destroyed a few temples he had donated to build. Aurangzeb took the path of religion and preached hatred agianst his brother because he was the tolerant towards all religions. He had him killed on the same charges.

Babar and his assasin
A young Rajput man cherished tremendous jealousy towards Babar because everybody appreciated, admired and adored the Emperor. Babar's subjects always extolled him to the skies for his bravery, kindness, nobility and other divine qualities. For this reason, the young man had been harbouring a desire to kill Babar. He had heard that from time to time the Emperor walked in Delhi city all alone. So this young man always carried a sword, hoping that someday he would meet the Emperor when he did not have his bodyguards with him and then have the opportunity to kill the Emperor.
Usually, when Babar went out, his guards would secretly follow him to protect him. Although Babar did not want anyone to go with him, his guards were afraid for his safety. Babar was the ruler of the whole empire, but in this respect his own bodyguards would not listen to him.
One particular afternoon, Babar managed to walk out of the palace gates alone, without his guards. As usual, he went incognito. As he was walking along observing the daily activities of his subjects, he saw a mad elephant coming down the street. The elephant was trampling everything in sight. Pandemonium broke out. People were shouting and trying to escape from the elephant's path and everybody was panicking. But there was one little, helpless child who could not run fast enough to get out of the elephant's way. Everybody was frightened to death, but nobody dared to try to save the child.
Just as the elephant was about to trample the little child, the Emperor ran over at top speed and snatched the child out of the way. Babar saved the child, but as he was running away with the child in his arms, his turban fell to the ground. When the mad elephant had passed by, some men ran to pick up the turban of the brave hero. Immediately they saw the Emperor's crown inside the turban. The young man who had wanted to kill Babar was one of those who witnessed the whole scene. Although he himself had known that the child's life was in grave danger, he had not been brave enough to try to save him. He had run away, just like everybody else.
When he realised what had happened, he fell at Babar's feet and said, "O Emperor, forgive me."
Babar asked him, "What have you done?"

The man replied, "I have been cherishing the desire to kill you for many years because I was terribly jealous of the admiration you receive. Now I see that you truly deserve it. As Emperor, you are far more precious to the kingdom than any of us, but you were ready to give up your own life to save an ordinary human being. What I have learned from you is that it is infinitely better to give life than to take life. This is what you have taught me. Now, instead of taking your life, I am giving you mine. Please take my life."

Then he offered Babar the same sword with which he had planned to kill him.

Babar took the sword and said, "I taught you how to give life. Now I am going to take your life, but not in the way that you think. Come with me. From now on, you will be one of my bodyguards. I can see that your sincerity is truly remarkable and I am sure that you will be a faithful guard."

So Babar took the man's life, only to make it into a useful and fruitful one. Instead of killing him, instead of punishing him, Babar made the man one of his personal body gaurd.

Honour of an enemy
The name of the first Moghul Emperor was Babar, 'the Tiger'. He was not as great as Akbar, who was the greatest of all the Moghul Emperors, but he still was a very great Emperor. Since he was the first to conquer India and remain as Emperor, he had to fight and fight and fight to establish his kingdom.
He entered India on his own behalf to subjugate Ibrahim Lodi once and for all and seize Agra and Delhi for himself. Babar seized Samarkand from his cousin in 1497, but was soon ousted. The young warrior took it again a few years later, but once again he was forced to abandon it. He then advanced to Kabul, which he conquered in 1504 at the age of twenty-one. He adopted the Persian title of 'Padishah', meaning 'Emperor'. He soon set his sights on the conquest of India. India had been divided between two brothers: Ibrahim Lodi and Jaunpur. Jaunpur's supporters requested Babar to help them defeat Ibrahim Lodi. But every time he tried they were defeated.
At that time Babar's son Humayun was sixteen years old. Humayun means 'Fortunate'. Sad to say, a series of unfortunate events later took place in Babar's and Humayun's lives like poisoning of Babar, ill health of Humayun, ill health of Babur etc.
As they were about to embark on their campaign, Humayun said, "Father, you know our army is nothing in comparison to Ibrahim Lodi's army. He has over 100,000 soldiers and 1,500 elephants, whereas we have only 12,000 soldiers. How can you dare to fight with him?" But Babar replied, "No, my son, we shall conquer them. Let them have the number. We have the quality and the capacity." Humayun said, "Father, I shall always abide by your will. Let us go." Babur did not have any elephants in his army. Indeed they saw elephants the first time in india.
Both father and son were great heroes, and with their small army they went to conquer Ibrahim Lodi's army. There ensued a bloody battle known as the Battle of Panipat. Although Babar's forces were outnumbered by those of Ibrahim Lodi, Babar had both guns and cannons in his weaponry. Cannons were previously unknown in India, and they brought destruction to Ibrahim Lodi's soldiers and also caused his elephants to stampede. Finally, Babar's army began to overpower the vast forces of Ibrahim Lodi.
The King fought very bravely, but eventually he was killed by Babar's men. The commander who killed him was full of happiness that the enemy King was dead and he hurried to tell Babar the news. Babar immediately asked the commander to take him to the dead body.
When Babar got to the scene, he raised Ibrahim Lodi's head from the ground and said, "I admire you. You fought very, very bravely. Now I will take full responsibility to see that you are honoured as a King should be when he dies. I will give you a grand funeral worthy of a King and I will have a King's tomb erected. I will do everything for you. You are a real hero!". Ibrahim Lodhi's tomb is at panipat. Thus babar gave respect to his enemy who had earlier defeated him in war many times.
