Jalal felt a stab in his heart, he could not fathom his emotions - Jodha was innocent - yes she defied him many times but she was not malicious in nature. After the miscarriage fiasco was resolved he was ashamed of his actions. Blinded by ill will and hatred he naturally assumed Jodha and her family to be guilty. Reflecting thus Jalal realized that Jodha was unlike Ruqaiya and Salima. Ruqaiya conquered the other begums in the harem - she ensured she had total control over them by threatening or punishing them. She could be callous and demeaning when the situation arose. Ruqaiya thrived on power which is what she wanted at any cost.
The other begums too did not mind, they came from small kingdoms and for them just to be called the Shahensha's begum was enough. Although these women were petty and fickle minded they still deserved to be happy. His conscious pricked him.
He knew Salima's heart was stilled ruled by Bairam Khan - he offered her and her son Rahim protection via marriage. She demanded nothing from him and did her duties perfectly and faithfully.
Jodha on the other hand was differed - she was ruled by her heart and never betrayed what she felt - her hatred, compassion and love was evident in her actions and expressions in her eyes. She was not afraid to say what she felt even though she may have to face dire consequences. She had strong Rajput blood, truth & honor was deeply ingrained in her. She gave herself selflessly to save others even when she knew the consequences. Even the shahi farman meant nothing to her, she gladly used it to save her maid. Ruqaiya could never be so generous, the last time she won the shahi farman she requested 100 days & nights of the Shahensha to be hers; literally at her beck & call.
He was furious with Maham anga - that she could lie so blatantly and use her relationship with him to her advantage. He need to tread carefully, Maham was ruthless and he knew she had forces with her, not that he was afraid but he need to catch her out red-handed. His doubts on Maham stemmed from the miscarriage episode. What possible gripe could a mere bhanjaran have against the Sultanate. Also how did she get Mahams exact robes and entry into the palace and even stay in palace as Maham's duplicate. Someone must have been helping her.
These questions were playing in his mind and he resolved to find answers if only he had not been distracted by sending Jodha back. He saw how unhappy she was here and all he wanted to do was make amends. She wished to return to Amer and if that made her happy he was glad to do it. Since the day he gave Jodha permission to divorce him - she turned hostile towards him- hair splitting defiance which grated him. The only reason she participated in the meena bazaar was because of his mother .
Jalal knew Hamida was very partial towards Jodha. Jodha gave her the love and respect that even Bakshi bano and he did not give their mother.
With all these thoughts running in his head he felt exhausted - he walked to his chamber asked his personal guards to leave him alone. As he lay on bed his thoughts drifted back to Jodha.
Chapter 4 (precap)
Two days had gone by; Jodha remained in her chambers in solitary self-imposed confinement. She refused all meals and whenever Jalal entered her chambers she found her either reading the gita or in meditation. He tried to incite by teasing her just to gain a reaction but nothing he did caused her to react. He was no doubt worried - he had never seen her like this. She was always eager and ready to challenge him with the slightest provocation. He didn't want to admit it but he missed the old Jodha - the placid being in front of him was alien to him. Even his ammijaan whom Jodha adored could not break through her. Although she did respond to Hamida questions and general remarks- it was in mono syllables.
Well today was the third day and as per her mother's oath Jodha had to go to Mathura and give alms and feed the poor folk and Brahmins. The day before, Jalal had made it clear to her that he will accompany her to mathura. Whether she heard him or not - she said nothing.
Unknown to Moti and the other maids, Jodha arranged whatever valuables she had in terms of gold coins, jewels, precious stones she gathered together and set out at well before dawn. The palace guards did not recognize her in the simple attire and thinking she was an ordinary worker did not stop her.
When Jodha came to agra - the many pujaris came to pay her a visit after all she was a Rajput princess and although married to a Mughal she maintained her religion. Being awed by her reolve and bravery the pujaris came to bless her. They also mentioned their pilgrimage to Mathura, hearing that she longed to travel with them however the shahensha would not hear of it. This was the perfect opportunity to join them, they won't recognize her and making a slip from the guards would be easy.
Joining them en route she made the journey on foot. Drawing her sari anchal over her face she walked with the woman who sang melodious bhajans. The journey would take no longer than half the morning and they would reach Mathura well before midday.
As the palace inhabitants stirred in their sleep the ameri princess walked on in vigor to reach Mathura. As the sun shone its splendor over the Agra skyline Moti who had been faithfully keep vrat with her mistress entered the chambers to get her queen prepared for the journey ahead. She knew that the shahensha would be coming any minute to escort his begam to Mathura.
A shrill cry broke the otherwise serene chamber and Jalal who was just about to enter Jodha's chamber was astounded by the cry. He barged in and saw moti dropping to the floor bending over as she wailed. She clenched a scroll in her hand sobbing uncontrollably. Jalal walked over and grabbed the scroll in his hand whilst the other bandis tried to comfort Moti.
