Getting ready for work hence did a quick read of your post which deserves a thorough relish later on in the day.
Heathcliff (one of my two most favorite heroes, the other being Darcy) would never in his wildest dreams have hurt Catherine for any crime that she committed against him. He would have hurt, he would have bled, he would have at once enjoyed the pain merely because it was being inflicted upon him by Catherine and because it was providing him an opportunity to interact with her, be with her. Heathcliff ranted and raged at the unfairness of it all, was cruel and sadistic but it was all because his love was snatched from him forcibly by that grand leveler, death. So, I cannot agree with your comparison of Jalal to that demented lover.
As you yourself admit, Jalal is nowhere near feeling love for Jodha. You hit the nail precisely when you said he is most angry with himself for not having seen it coming, for softening up but it is still all about himself, a selfish, all absorbing focus on himself, his child and his loss. Not saying that is not an unprecedented reaction, just that there is nothing there in his behavior to be applauded. He is behaving like a jack ass and from here it seems like it is going to be an impossible ride around the seven seas before he can wear that title of Akbar.
As for Jodha, do you really think her posing that statement of "you will never sleep after finding out we are innocent" is going to make a dent in his thinking? Why does she have to give a thought about his peaceful sleep when he is behaving like he has totally lost his marbles? She does not love him, barely likes him so she cares two hoots about his well-being even from the perspective of a detached do-good person. She does not need to explain to him about her courage, why waste her words on unhearing ears, why demean herself by explaining herself to a bullhead? She is new to the politics in Agra, merely conjecturing who could have done the deed cannot serve her at all. Her hands are tied, she cannot investigate, deduce, if she suspects Maham Anga and tells Jalal that, is he going to spare it a thought? Why bother at all? She has been married to a madman and she is letting him rage as there is NOTHING she can do at the current time to tame him. I hope she leads him a merry dance before he gets what he wants of her - her love and an heir.
