Shyamala, beautifully written, thought provoking.
Getting ready for work hence did a quick read of your post which deserves a thorough relish later on in the day.

Heathcliff (one of my two most favorite heroes, the other being Darcy) would never in his wildest dreams have hurt Catherine for any crime that she committed against him. He would have hurt, he would have bled, he would have at once enjoyed the pain merely because it was being inflicted upon him by Catherine and because it was providing him an opportunity to interact with her, be with her. Heathcliff ranted and raged at the unfairness of it all, was cruel and sadistic but it was all because his love was snatched from him forcibly by that grand leveler, death. So, I cannot agree with your comparison of Jalal to that demented lover.

As you yourself admit, Jalal is nowhere near feeling love for Jodha. You hit the nail precisely when you said he is most angry with himself for not having seen it coming, for softening up but it is still all about himself, a selfish, all absorbing focus on himself, his child and his loss. Not saying that is not an unprecedented reaction, just that there is nothing there in his behavior to be applauded. He is behaving like a jack ass and from here it seems like it is going to be an impossible ride around the seven seas before he can wear that title of Akbar.

As for Jodha, do you really think her posing that statement of "you will never sleep after finding out we are innocent" is going to make a dent in his thinking? Why does she have to give a thought about his peaceful sleep when he is behaving like he has totally lost his marbles? She does not love him, barely likes him so she cares two hoots about his well-being even from the perspective of a detached do-good person. She does not need to explain to him about her courage, why waste her words on unhearing ears, why demean herself by explaining herself to a bullhead? She is new to the politics in Agra, merely conjecturing who could have done the deed cannot serve her at all. Her hands are tied, she cannot investigate, deduce, if she suspects Maham Anga and tells Jalal that, is he going to spare it a thought? Why bother at all? She has been married to a madman and she is letting him rage as there is NOTHING she can do at the current time to tame him. I hope she leads him a merry dance before he gets what he wants of her - her love and an heir.

Love your lengthy detailed post, no complains there! I am tired of the maun dhari Jodha, so hard to digest especially we have seen her speak up against any kind of wrong doing. In this case she is being blamed for such a grave crime and the best we get is some angry stares.
I agree with your point that Jodha won't go to Amer. She will send chilli cold vibes to Jalal in Agra. Your advice to Jalal on what to say to stop the chilli waves is awesome. That's the only way he can calm her down. May be Jodha will break her maun vrath after she is proven innocent. Then all hell will break loose on Jalal, she will give him a nice banter!

Oh, oh, oh! Look where we are headed after all that talk of not getting involved with the characters! Janhvi, my Janhvi!😉

I will grant you the part about Heathcliff, though I did put in a rider of sorts. I think I fell in love with my title, you see, and so poor Heathcliff had to be fitted into this Procrustean bed of Jalal's!😉

No, Janhvi, you have completely missed the point about what I would have liked Jodha to say. It is not meant to convey concern about his sleep deprivation. It is meant to be sarcastic or ironical or both, and keeping in mind the tenor of all her comments to him so far, that is exactly how Jalal would have taken it. And the part about not being afraidof being burnt to death is meant to puncture his hopes of frightening her with the escalating pitch of his threats, culminating in the public auto da fe one.

I am only surprised at your taking the whole at face value.

I stand by my position: it would have been far better for Jodaha to say something sharp than to bleat at him Aap unhe itni peedha kyon panhunchana chahte hain? It is not just with Jalal in this in extremis situation. Jodha said exactly the same thing to, of all people, Mahaam Anga after that old crone had finished describing how Motibai would expire behind that wall. That made me cringe. That, and the way she let Mahaam talk to her on the next such occasion after the farman had been presented to Jalal and Motibai freed. That too was cringeworthy.

If Jodha does not need to expatiate on her courage to Jalal, she does not, by the same token, need to expose her weaknesses either.

Incidentally, Janhvi, have you been watching this from the beginning? If not, when did you start?

Thank you so much for the post! Sorry missed some of your posts in between... but I look forward to it every single time :)
We have in our minds an etched image of what Akbar was but for him to become that the he could have been something of what we see now where in his temper make made mistakes - was cruel and heartless.
I like how the show chose to showcase that negative side - all humans are grey and so was he.
I love how Maan singh at his age is shown so wise and brave - I guess that is why he was held in such high esteem. I loved how he stood up for justice...and fearlessly stood by his aunt.
Its sad to see the humiliation of the innocents whether its the father, brothers or Jodha herself...but somewhere Jalal has to learn the life lesson of justice, fairness, empathy, love, tolerance because in his blind anger he almost detroyed his own chance of happiness.

Maham's love for Jalal is the only redeeming quality.. After Adham dies.. there will be a touching Jalal-Jodha-Maham scene.. when she is on her deathbed..pakki baat

And I felt betrayed by you because I had begun to admire you, respect you, and most important of all, trust you. Achche khaase Shahenshah ka tumne kya haal bana diya, Jodha! Jo bhi maine kiya, wo sab tumhara hi kasoor hai.

She would have caved in and forgiven him, because we women, all of us, are suckers for the idea that we have tamed a headstrong, rough and tough man and made him our own. I think I will drop Jalal this useful hint for future use😉. Of course he might muff his lines, but there is only so much one can do for him!

Meanwhile, folks, don't fret so much. Try and appreciate Rajat's very convincing takes on a vengeful Jalal, and tell yourself ,when it is particularly off putting, This too shall pass!

I do apologise for such a late post, but it was the best I could do.

Shyamala B.Cowsik

Oh Aunty, - if only Jalal says the above...but I think I would be in a dream world, where when I woke up I would be living on a different planet, ...there is no way Jalal is ever going to say that, BUT I love your words and wholeheartedly agree...

As for taming a headstrong, rough and tough man...I like the rough and tough...BUT I have no patience for Headstrong...only one can have that in a relationship and that happens to be me...😆😆😆

I won't comment on the rest...you know where I stand and I won't bore you with my predictability...😉

Take care,

Sonya
