Chapter 11:
Jodha quickly runs to Jalal and hears him moaning. She runs and grabs the water from his bag and slowly gets him to drink a little bit. Jalal is weak from the loss of blood, but is able to regain consciousness. When he sees Jodha leaning towards him, giving him water he pushes her away and gets up slowly, biting back a scream as he strains his shoulders and feels the full effect of the blood loss.
He grabs his horse and tries to mount, but his shoulder will not allow him to place any of his weight on it….it's useless right now and he knows he has to get it treated quickly otherwise he might lose the function of his full arm.
Jodha sees him struggling and slowly approaches him. "Shenshah ji…….I can help you. I know you are injured and are in this position because of me. Let me help you."
Jalal bites back a scathing retort and allows her to help him mount on the horse. Jodha quickly mounts behind him and he sets off for Agra. Less than 30 minutes into the journey Jalal's body is starting to sag and his energy is sapped. Jodha sees him losing his strength and knows that they must stop somewhere soon and get his injuries attended to. She knows he doesn't want ot hear anything from her, but she must speak up.
"Shenshah, we must stop. Your injuries are severe and we have to get them looked at right away. Why don't we try to find some shelter as the night is approaching and see if there is anyone skilled enough to attend to your injuries. And if we can get some food, you need everything right now to keep you going. Please, can we not just stop and wait until tomorrow to continue onwards?"
Jalal knows that what Jodha is saying is practical, but his thoughts are focused on him thinking she just wants another opportunity to escape. "you would love it for me to stop somewhere random, so that while I'm being looked after for my shoulder you can run off again. Jodha I am not letting you out of my sight even for a moment and I will give you no opportunity to escape me again…..ever!"
An exasperated, tired Jodha has run out of patience "Shenshah, you are acting unreasonably….you know your wounds are deep and you need them treated. Stop immediately at the next village."
Jalal doesn't respond and Jodha wonders whether he will heed her advice. Eventually they see a small remote village in the distance and Jalal stops once they reach it. Jodha gets off of the horse, but just as Jalal is about to get off, he jerks his shoulder and with the sudden pain knocks himself unconscious again. Jodha sees that the blood has completely soaked through from his clothes and he is in a bad state at the moment. She notices that most of the village is gathered around a fire, telling stories and playing soft music. She goes towards them, and quickly asks " My husband is badly wounded, we were attacked on our journey towards Agra. Is there anyone here who is a healer and can help with his wounds. ?"
One man gets up and goes with her to Jalal. He gets two others from the village to help him move Jalal to his hut and proceeds to get everything ready to clean and sew the wound. "I can take care of your husband, why don't you go and sit with the other ladies and enjoy the music and food. My wife here, will find you a change of clothes. " He sees Jodha hesitate, "Please beta, you look exhausted, you need some rest and nourishment. Follow my advice. Here is my wife now. "
Jodha reluctantly agrees to be lead by his wife and changes into the clothes she gives her. For once Jodha feels relaxed. That there is someone else who can take care of the situation and she doesn't need to watch her back……
Meanwhile, Jalal is unconscious as the man works thoroughly and quickly in cleaning and sewing up his wounds. He is able to force some broth down Jalal's throat and leaves him to rest in his hut.
Outside, Jodha is eating and drinking with the other ladies and a group of Banjaren's are getting ready to sing and dance for the gathered crowd. Jodha looks up and sees Jalal walking towards the group staring at her as he comes closer. The man who helped Jalal stops him and a few words are exchanged. Jalal continues towards Jodha, and she has no idea why she is feeling so apprehensive, surely he won't make a scene in front of all of these people. He grabs her hand and pulls her a little bit away.
"Jodha, I told you to not leave my side. When I woke up I expected you to be there with me. Where are we, and who are these people? And why do they not know who we are. It is quite clear with the way that man spoke to me, that he has no idea who we are, and is running on a mistaken assumption that we are just travelling towards Agra.? What did you tell them?"
Jodha whispered "Shenshah, you are right, I haven't told them who we are. These people are Hindu, and I had no way of knowing how they would respond or react if they found out who you were. You needed treatment immediately, there was no time to think other than that your wound needed to be looked at. And for tonight, please just for tonight, let us mix in with these people who are sharing their food and drink with us and enjoy the evening with them. Please let us just relax with them and enjoy the night."
Jalal could hear the desperation in her voice. He had no idea why this was so important to her, but as he needed to rest anyways and his shoulder was killing him, what harm was there in allowing her this request. "fine, but tomorrow morning we depart immediately."
The Banjare started then, a nice melodic tune, with the lyrics reflecting on everything good there was in life, everything that there was too be cherished. Jalal had left her and sat with the other men, and Jodha couldn't help but stare at him, this husband of hers. She reflected upon what was being said in the song, and realized that since her marriage, she had not once focused on the positive. She had not once focused on any of the good in Jalal, instead always looking for his bad qualities, always looking for the negative in his actions. But he had saved her life. Whatever his reasons, he had saved her from a fate quite possibly worse than the one she was living. If anything he deserved her gratitude and kindness in return. He deserved for her to start acting like his wife and not an enemy to be battled with. She vowed that from this day forward she would try to do everything within her control to be a good wife to him.
Jalal can sense that someone is watching him. When he looks over he sees Jodha staring at him, lost in her thoughts. Every time he looks at her, her beauty has the power to overwhelm his senses. Not just her beauty, her strength of character, her pride, her honor, her loyalty…..if only she would give those qualities to him. If only she would be loyal and honor her relationship with him. If only…….but Jalal has given up hope….her actions of the last week have proven to him that she will never respond to him the way he wants her to.
He knows he was wrong with the way he treated her in the beginning, but had he not tired to make amends for that. They were married after all, married…..and yet she doesn't seem to respect that bond which ties them together. She wants to flee me, she hates me, she despises me……He turns away from her eyes…frustrated at himself for allowing her to have this unknown power over him. Look at him, all weak and pathetic..giving into her every demand, her every wish. But then he sees her joy in the music, he sees her unreserved happiness when speaking with the other woman, and he realizes he hasn't provided her with a home. He placed her in his palace, no servants of her own, no friends, no family and expected her to like him, to come to love him……He tried to overpower her, tried to make her his, without providing her anything to would make her believe she was anything but another conquest for him. Oh Jodha…..you are so much more than that to me……I vow, from this day forward to be a better husband, to honor you, respect you and cherish you as my wife.
And now our love story begins...
