a mughul or muslim cannot have more than 4 wives. either the husband have to divorce/ one of his wife must die inorder to marry 5th one. As far as history goes akbar has 3 wives [ i dont whether 4th one is ther or no ] and rest are his mistress. they call themselves to be his begums and they are even given a status of wives but he never really married them. he just accepted them to be his mistress thats all.
Although Muslim law allows only 4 wives, none of the Mughal Kings followed this law, because they often married to create political alliances. Akbar had 7 legal wives and 300 concubines. Jahangir had 20 legal wives (the last and most popular being Nur Jahan) and even more concubines. Shah Jahan had 5 legal wives and also 100s of concubines. Mumtaz Mahal was his 3rd wife, but he had 2 wives after her also.
All the women of high birth/status in the harems were legal wives only, because they were too "noble" to be concubines. They were married into the Mughal families to create political alliances, so this particular law of Islam was not followed by emperors. The concubines were generally women of low birth whose sole purpose was to give pleasure to the Kings.
