I agree with you up to a point. Being able to sing romantic songs is definitely an extremely useful skill to have in order to succeed; however, being able to sing very little other than romantic songs shows a lack of versatility. In terms of voting, though, the public may feel more partial towards someone who is strong in the romantic genre, even if they sing very little else. I believe that there is something about pulling off a romantic song well that makes the public warm towards a singer. Romantic music speaks to people's hearts, and consistently effective singing can definitely sway votes and give the singer a good chance of winning, even if they rarely deviate from that genre.
However, I think a true and deserving winner (voting aside) should have a definite niche (in any particular genre) but at the same time be able to sing in a variety of styles. Having a niche makes a singer more memorable and less generic, and being able to do justice to songs from many different genres shows true skill. If their niche is in romantic songs, this may be so much the better for their "shelf life" in the music industry; then again the music scene is changing nowadays, and there tend to be a lot more fast numbers ruling the airwaves than soft romantic ones, so perhaps being able to sing catchy dance numbers might be a greater-desired skill amongst today's producers/music directors.
Thanks for a nice and detailed analysis. Catchy numbers are perhaps more difficult to sing. They may get immediate attention but I am not sure of their lasting power.I think any song sung in a soulful manner can have lasting impression.
