Let’s remember that the power dynamics are important. Yes, both were forced. But if Ani wasn’t prepared to say anything, how would Jhanak have said it? Facts is that now, Jhanak is usual, is the punching bag for them. That’s why she always tries to divert it to Ani. Yes, there are situations he cannot be there when she is insulted - but the situations that Ani stayed put let to this. The situations he lied led to this. Ani was too busy trying to please his family when he first brought Jhanak, so that he never firmly set boundaries with them about her treatment, everything he did was in half-measures. Take her books for instance, do makers think everyone lives in another world that we would really believe that Ani has done even 1% of what he CAN do concerning her schooling, concerning her overall treatment? This is Ani Bose, who doesn’t have the show named after him but practically has every other character centered on him in some way they are not even centered on Jhanak. But that was not all. Ani slowly shifted from pleasing others to himself. I think it’s safe to say that Ani’s feelings didn’t just spring up - I could see from when he got jealous over Rahul, yelled at her, and had that dream of her leaving him, that Ani had already been compromised on his outward facing behavior of staying with Arshi. If he thought this change was bad, fine. But since then, Ani has done everything to keep Jhanak in that house, next to him, just so he can see her, even it means that she would be hurt in some way. His empathy doesn’t go far to understand that such an environment is too bad for her too young. It’s not like he can’t - I saw how shaken he was after her attempted suicide - but Ani would never let those feelings of guilt overwhelm his suppressed desires. It’s Ani first for Ani. Not Arshi, not Jhanak. It’s Ani first because what ever method he employs must never be one where he ends badly or suffers some loss, regardless of the damage it does to Jhanak. He either turns against her in some way or does half-measure promises. After he saw his family’s reaction to Jhanak the first time, Ani has almost never (if ever) been honest with his family upfront about his intentions for Jhanak and set boundaries. Yes, even though he was supposed to ‘act’ like he hated her, Ani could still have maintained the route of humanity. She has to get paid, school, and do what she wants regardless of his feelings. But I bet Ani doesn’t even know what his plans are for Jhanak in the next two minutes. He keeps saying she would leave when this and that, but it’s clear that Ani who is so motivated by his feelings and belief systems will still flake when that time comes - unless he goes through some character development. I do hope this Ani dies as Arshi’s version and the one we get to see withJhanak is an Ani that has undergone some renewal and development. To be fair, Jhanak is going to be a more healthy partner for him that Arshi, but there is only so much I will blame on the other victim even though I like her less than him.
