I however need to make a point regarding the whole vulgarity angle popping up every weekend and 10-20 topics discussing vulagrity of dance by all dancers.
Errm, this is dance. Dance expresses emotions, all sorts of it, and for that a certain amount of closeness is needed between the partners. There are 9 emotions of rasha which are even expressed in Indian classical dances, two of them being sringer and adi rasa, which expresses love and attachment of romantic type.

So why this puritan attitude towards another expression of life and its emotions I do not understand. Its a dance show, people will dance and wear costumes that allow them to dance. The costumes for international dances will be shorter and different from indian classical dances. Do you guys remember when the american choreographers came to JDJ last season and performed in samba? The dresses the girls were wearing were barely nothing. Compared to that I would say Jhalak celebs are dressed in tents.

I wonder what you guys will feel if you see temple carvings in places like ajanta illora and khajuraho. That Indian civilization seems to have perished completely.

Whats with the extra sensitive touchy feely posts labelling everything under the sun as vulgar?

Did i or anyone here say that they were applying for sainthood? You seem to love the word "saint". I don't like a dance step, how does that correlate to whatever good/ bad I have done in my life? You took someone's viewpoint on a dance and extrapolated it to form an opinion on their entire value system. Wohoa! thats a giant leap

I did read your opening lines and they made perfect sense since you are a dancer and your opinion made perfect sense to me about how one is so engrossed in the dance.

its your second para when you decided to go on the offensive and pass value judgements that i have a problem with. As for targeting only 1 contestant, i can't take responsibility for all but my post clearly mentioned other ppl in the show and others who have done this dance step.

As for the "U.S", how is that relevant? here i am genuinely curious. Are all ppl living in the US open minded and all in India narrow/ rigid? Talk about generalisations ... There are all types of people across both the countries so this argument does not hold ... at all.

What u or the other members on this forum consider vulgar I don't, so different opinions I guess...Peace out...and just to mention no way I was generalizing, me being raised in the U.S. has just made me a lot more open minded, and that was meant for the vulgarity..I didn't say you were narrow/rigid..so please stop twisting my words, and if anyway I offended you, I apologize...

There are many lifts in dance that could look vulgar to someone. It's about perception. It's also about how much that person is exposed to certain types of cultures. Dance lifts done in the west are being attempted (and executed well) by the Indian contemporaries. We should be proud of that and not jump on every opportunity to label a certain dance step vulgar.

In today's dance, the idea of a village girl dancing in modern steps is tough to swallow and when that lift was executed, they pushed the envelope. However, that is the aim in dance! To dance well and see what new creations can come about. As this is a dance show for the masses, however, I maintain that the show should keep a look at the aura, costumes, music and feel of the entire performance before showing the acts. That way, the dance steps would be more appreciated (and not labeled as vulgar). Case in point, in yesterday's dance, a cabaret dancer does similar lifts but they were probably well received. We are used to cabaret dancers dancing that way.

In no way am I saying that any of the performances this weekend were vulgar. All the lifts are tough and we should commend them for doing them. If the lifts look vulgar, I blame the costumes and the entire feel of the act (including song and atmosphere created) along with the fact that this is something new for an Indian audience and is tough to digest. The lifts are perfectly fine and we just need to open our minds to allow the contestants push the envelope and show us good art. It will take a while and therefore, for an Indian mainstream audience, the show should take care of how they allow the acts to be portrayed.

And that is all..if anyone feels like I've "bashed" any contestant, please know that that is not my intention.

Does not art (in any form) touch people differently ? If art affected everyone the same, if everyone took the same feeling back then the art is a complete failure. One might find a certain dress too skimpy yet be completely blown away by the sheer magnificence of Ajanta. We love to make sweeping generalisations on this forum. puritan/ extra sensitive/ touchy feely - fantastic!

Positive or negative, praise or criticism, the day people stop reacting to art is the day it will die. You argue for freedom of expression for the art itself yet are baffled by the freedom to respond to that art.

You are spot on with the expressions. But expressing romanticism & sensuality and we do know sensuality when overdone it becomes vulgar.

Well, the expression in Rasa you mentioned are absolutely fine. But a program made for family viewers do curtail on things depending on the existing family values. Otherwise all channels would be MTV kind of dance and you will admit that still today Indian families don't enjoy the full rasa sitting together.

So what's ok in a movie or in a particular channel aired for non family viewers, if suddenly aired in a family audience channels, do embarrass the viewers. Like a crude bedroom scene is ok in a movie if the restricted body parts are not shown, while such scenes are considered vulgar in a TV serial, since it's for a family audience,

So, vulgarity is a relative term, depending on the target audience & their culture... I'm sure, you will agree that Ajanta, Illora or Khajoraho doesn't depict Indian values of today... Every civilization has moved forward than what it was a few thousand years back. If we consider such old civilization as the original and try to go back there; we would be basically going back to the days of nudity when there was no cloth as such no shame in living naked.

Everything is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but if one finds certain aspect of dancing vulgar, then they are entitled to it. Everyone is different on the forum. There are many who don't have much knowledge about dancing while there are those who are yet to be comfortable with intimacy on the screen. India is comprised with all sorts of people, forget India, entire world can be drawn on a spectrum from one extreme to another.

As for the Ajanta statues, even today there are many who can't embrace this part of our civilization. I remember gifting such statues, but they returned the gift thinking it was vulgar and not worth accepting it. So there will be those who will have problem with certain steps, while the rest won't for various reasons, valid and not so valid ones.

One may find certain steps or dancing vulgar based on their perception. But we can't go around questioning that since one won't be able to relate to others perception without knowing from where he or she comes from. I mean someone who doesn't have any problem with DD's dancing was claiming item #s done by Mukti vulgar and she wanted her freedom of speech. But when it comes to DD-Sal, others freedom of speech can go take a hike.

The problem I see on the forum is people not letting others express freely and start questioning their background, country, mentality yada yada for having a different opinion on the topic.

Edit: Grammar 😡😡
