Renuka Shahane is happy that rumours about her comeback show Jeete Hain Jiske Liye going off air didn't come true. Instead the show is all set for a 20-year generation leap next week. "I would have been very disappointed had the show been taken off air due to poor TRPs. I love the show and the character I am playing," says the ever smiling Renuka, a mother of two kids in real life. Now she will play mother to two grown up kids in the serial after the show takes a 20-year leap.

Adapted from a Spanish soap, Jeete Hain Jiske Liye was supposed to go for a generation leap after 20 episodes. In fact, the original Spanish soap starts with the generation leap where the protagonist is shown returning from jail after 20 years. "But we decided to go for the 20-year leap after 45 episodes because it was felt that in the Indian context the narrative could be bit lenient so that the betrayal angle is established properly before Anjali returned from jail," explains Renuka who has no problem playing a 45-year-old woman post-generation leap.

The character will undergo a complete change now. Her innocence, naivety and trusting nature will disappear. "Nothing makes a difference to her. She is bitter about what she went through in life and her only weakness is her children who have been kept in the dark about their mother's existence," she elaborates. "But Anjali will return to her marital home in disguise and become step-mother to her children by marrying Aman." However, the sad news is the show's poor ratings. "TRPs are very bad. But then the channel's (Sony) overall TRP is also not very encouraging. We all are trying to make Jeete Hain work. A lot of money has been invested in the show and I hope it does well because a good story is the need of the hour. I think the show needs to pick up momentum and the generation leap will provide the much needed spike," she said.

SCHEMING ACT:Souniya Kapur

Souniya back on TV

Himesh Reshammiya's rumoured girlfriend to play a vamp in Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye

Souniya Kapur, who made news as the much-married Himesh Reshammiya's real life love interest, will be seen as the scheming Menaka in the Sony show Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye. "I play a former supermodel with shades of grey and on a mission to marry a rich man. I try to cosy up to Aman (Ayub Khan) but then a wannabe male model blackmails me," says Souniya.
Apparently, she's even gone in for a makeover for this role. "Viewers will see a dramatic change in my looks with permed hair, designer sarees and sexy blouses," says Kapur, who was last seen in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. "This role was a dream come true because I've always wanted to work with Tony and Deeya Singh. I was also keen to work with Renuka Shahane," she says.
Persian film
Souniya also recently shot for a Persian movie called Panaah (Shelter), where she plays an Afghani girl. "It's in total contrast to the work I have done so far. It's a realistic film based on incidents that took place during the Afghan war. I play a girl who gets separated from her lover during the war. She then seeks refuge in India and is compelled to marry the man who shelters her," says Souniya, whose co-star is a Bulgarian actor called Asaad Sikandar. As for her close 'friendship' with Reshammiya, Souniya is unperturbed by the fact that she's been excluded from his film Aap Ka Suroor — The Real Love Story. Recently, there were also rumours that she'd walked out of his camp after she wasn't asked to compere his concert in Mumbai.
Says Souniya, "It's true that I didn't compere Himesh's concert in Mumbai, but that was because I was shooting elsewhere. As for his film, it never even occurred to me that I should be acting in it. And it's okay if he didn't ask me. We still continue to be friends minus any aashiqui (love). Whenever he next thinks of me, I'll be there."

" I can't play a subservient, wimpy,self-effacing, doormat ! "
Manini Mishra

Manini has essayed some of the most interesting and experimental roles on the small screen. We caught up with this pesky actress who plays the ice-block Ramona in Sony's Jeete Hai Jiske Liye.

"Ramona is a character that I have never played before.' she commences. "She's extremely bored in life and with everything around her. However, her world is filled with luxury, she's very fashion and comfort conscious. Ramona values money a lot and needs it all the time, for her it's almost everything. She likes to go on vacations to Bahamas and needs her afternoon soires."

Ramona's isn't too kicked about her marriage either, she isn't complacent about her relationship but just plain indifferent, Manini affirms, "My marriage with Ritu Raj is completely dysfunctional; they just seem to disagree on everything. And the marriage is present only for namesake; frankly she does not care a rat ass for anything or anyone." How does Manini react to such a marital situation? "I can't identify with it at all, I am sensitive, curious about everything and always exited in life. Ramona is completely opposite; thankfully I am in a perfectly functional marriage and a husband!"

Aadira bua aka Ashwini Kalsekar has helped in bringing up the children; are you going to also have a grey maternal side in the show? "I have done my indulgent bit of spoiling them. There's nothing maternal possible for Ramona." What about her own child? Wasn't Ramona pregnant before the leap? "Yes, and by now she would have a 20 year old kid, but I do not know the situation as the production house and channel has to take the decision. As I get to know about the child I will know!"

Will we see Ramona in a changed avatar after the leap? Rumours were that Manini refused to grey her hair, "It's true. I insisted that I will not grey and they did not expect me to grey my hair either. I don't think mothers today have grey hair; they are often swankier than their kids. I am a mother; do I look like the archetypal Nirupa Roy? Anyway whose mother today looks like Nirupa Roy? "

So, the essence of the character will remain the same, except that Ramona will grow to be more self conserving and opportunistic. She will turn more destructive but in the surreptitious way."

However, we have observed that even though Ramona has a strong negative shade, she does not turn tables on Aadira. Aadira on the other hand does a very good job at keeping Ramona in tow, "Aadira has brought us up, so there is a strong bond between the two. I don't think she will break away, they are very similar and Ramona being high and mighty doesn't resent Aadira's middle class mentality. Ramona is influenced by her and listens to her."

Manini has not been doing too may shows, she just can't bear the saas-bahu dramas. But then even the serials that she's doing are not too close to reality? "Not quite and I think it's about time we get real! I often voice it to the producer-directors and the creative people when they tell me that 'Real' doesn't sell! Please don't give me that, a Kadam, Koshish…Ek Asha can do well then the audience will also like to watch stories which are close to reality. I don't undermine soaps but I can't play a subservient, wimpy, self-effacing, doormat!"

So, what is her kind of genre? Serious, comic or the spine chillers? "I am the X-Files Grey's Anatomy kinda girl, I am waiting for the time we have this interesting stuff on Indian TV screens," she signs off.

We salute the actress with her grit to pass through the mindless grins day in and day out, as often her sensibilities rate higher than the IQ of most actors on TV have!

My Character & I

Rituraj plays the effeminate Tarun Mulchandani in the Sony daily Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye. He also features in Ek Ladki Anjaani Si. Here he talks about being Tarun and going oooh, la la about everything!

Rituraj plays the effeminate Tarun Mulchandani in the Sony daily Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye. He also features in Ek Ladki Anjaani Si. Here he talks about being Tarun and going oooh, la la about everything!
Apparently you were very happy with the generation leap in Jeete Hai Jiske Liiye?
Yes. That's because I did not have to grey my hair or wear glasses to look old. Instead, I just had to grow my hair and tie it in a braid!
A plait made you go 20 years fast forward?
Tarun is a flamboyant character. He loves to be noticed. So when the leap happened, it was natural that Tarun would be up to something to get talked about. Deeya and Tony Singh (producers of the show) conceived the look and I added my bit to it. And it looked very cool.
Has Tarun's personality changed with the leap?
He still remains a freeloader and lives off the Dhanrajgir wealth with his blunt talk. He still has his feminine qualities intact. He speaks in a very thin voice and uses a lot of hand gestures, so people are still wondering whether he is a gay or not. But his dressing style has sobered a bit — instead of a cowboy appearance there is a tuxedo now.
So is Tarun gay?
He is happily married so there is that mystery element to add to his 'gay or not' question. In fact, his wife Ramona (Maaninee Misshra) loves him. It's just that Tarun is extra friendly, hugging everyone (male and female). So the audience has to keep guessing.
How believable is Tarun?
Extremely believable. There are so many guys out there who are married, have kids but love to dress up flamboyantly and behave effeminately. Perhaps they are trying to send a message across to someone? We'll just have to figure it out!
As told to Shaheen Parkar

Living for a Cause

Twenty years have elapsed since Anjali Dhanrajgir was sentenced to life imprisonment. On the other hand her grown up children Ayesha and Rahul are given to believe that their mother is no more. She is a free woman now. Anjali's prime motive in life now is to reunite with her children and find the real murderer
he house of the Dhanrajgirs wears a gloomy look. Obviously, because a hawan (shraddh ceremony) has been organised in memory of Anjali Dhanrajgir. Besides the hawan kund lies a big photograph covered with a piece of cloth. A huge carpet is placed on which the family will sit and pay their homage to the departed soul. Flowers are seen placed on a big plate along with a bowl of chandan (sandalwood) and some other utensils needed for a pooja. The artistes along with Ayub Khan (Aman), Ashwini Kalsekar (Adira), Yuvraj Malhotra (Rahul), Priya Wal (Ayesha), Manini De (Ramona) and others are seen taking last-minute instructions from director Qaeed Kuwajerwala. The scene is going to be emotion-filled because the elders have to wear a grim face to show the twins Rahul and Ayesha how much they feel for Anjali, knowing for sure that she is alive and serving life imprisonment in a distant country. The shot is soon to be taken. The poojari takes his seat before the hawan kund and assorts flowers on a plate for everyone to come and place before the photo of Anjali. On a call of 'Action!' by Qaeed, Aman, Rahul, Ayesha, Adira are followed by the entire family who come and sit on the carpet. All of them look amused while the poojari initiates the ceremony by chanting a few mantras after which he wants to know the name of the departed soul. There is a pause while all eyes are on Aman. "Yamini Dhanrajgir" says Aman. "Cut!" says the director and the artistes get up for a small breather. As minor adjustments are warranted on the set, production hands get busy doing their bit while we corner Qaeed for a brief chat. When we want to know about Anjali, the director says, "In jail, she realises that someone from her family has framed her. She was to get 'death-by-hanging' but when she was found pregnant, her punishment was reduced to life imprisonment of twenty years. She gives birth to twins -a boy and a girl. Adira takes away the childen along with her and that leaves Anjali devastated. As her term is to come to an end, Anjali vows to unite with her children and find out who is the real culprit. Upon coming back, Anjali finds that Aman is busy with his business and least interested in what is going on in the house. She is happy to see her grown-up children but cannot reveal her identity as the circumstances don't permit." The artistes are all seated and are ready for the next shot to be canned. The poojari starts by saying, " Maa ki tasveer pe phool chadhaaiye" after which both Ayesha and Rahul get up and make an offering of flowers and when they unveil the photograph they find, to their astonishment, that it is not the photograph of their mother. Tears roll down the cheeks of Ayesha. The shot is complete and there is a big gap for the next shot to be taken.

We again get hold of Qaeed who responds positively. "We hear that the show is not doing well," we ask. "That's news!", he exclaims, " There are people who do not want to see any other show besides the saas-bahu dramas. They may be going around spreading such rumours. On the contrary, whoever I meet is all praise for my serial. On the treatment, Qaeed confides, "We have deviated from the actual presentation of the original 'Tele-novela'. That starts with a flashback and comes to the present, but we started with the present and have been on and off taking viewers to the past and bringing them back. But had we to go as per the original, God knows what must have happened." Describing the title of the serial, Qaeed says," Here everyone thrives for someone or the other. Aman thrives for Anjali who in turn longs for her children and wants to find the murderer, Ashwini dreams of acquiring the property and so on. Isn't Jeete Hain Jiske Liye sounding apt?"

Someone comes in to call and Qaeed leaves us with glee. Just then we spot Ayub Khan and request him for a small chat to which he readily agrees. Asked to brief us about his character, Ayub replies," Aman is now a brooding person. All the zest has been taken out of him and he feels cheated by life. He, in short, feels that a crutch has been taken away because Anjali, who was his strength and conviction, is no longer with him. But he believes that she has commited the murder and has an animosity towards her. For him Anjali is over and done and he has given up on her." On a question about his star-status after the show went on air, Ayub says," The serial has indeed given me a boost. Earlier, people who recognised me used to give me a pleasant look and pass by. Now, even if I am in my car and they happen to recognise me, they run back to my car and wave out to me."

While we are conversing, we see Ashwini Kalsekar coming our way. Sensing that we would now be interested in talking to her, Ayub takes our leave on the pretext of having to rehearse his lines. After she takes her seat, we ask Ashwini to define Adira's character."All that is going on in the house is well-planned by Adira. She has groomed Aman's children and has pampered them to such an extent that they have turned into spoilt brats. Adira is all out to rule the Dhanrajgir empire and is constantly trying her best to destabilise the family by making one fight against the other. She goes by the British dictate-'Divide and Rule.' In short you can describe Adira of being a 'Power Freak'. But everyone has his day. Soon Adira is going to be paid back by the same coin; her days of indulging in nasty deeds are about to end. Yes, mind you, though the needle of suspicion is on Adira, one has to see the serial to the end to find who the real culprit is." "Gumnam hai koi, badnaam hai koi, kis ko khabar kaun hai woh, anjaan hai koi, " she sighs.

Temptation island

Veteran actor Roopa Ganguly has also succumbed to the Balaji lure, tempted probably by big bucks and bigger exposure, into a wasted role that will have her doing little more than gazing adoringly at her daughter and casting frightened looks at the daughter's prospective in laws. Mita Vashisht, known for her strong performances in films, too has been reduced to playing a caricature in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Is it the dearth of really good roles on TV that pushes good actors to such roles?

Possibly. But the actors on Viruddh seem to be enjoying themselves immensely, toying with the strong dialogue and the emoting opportunities the script allows. It's pure pleasure watching the interactions of Vikram Gokhale, Govind Namdeo and Sushant Singh as they play out their professional and domestic political games with each other. Or is the sharp contrast the serial offers to insipid fare elsewhere that makes it stand out so bright?

One positive fallout of the World Cup getting over is that Sab can return to its usual programming mix. Left Right Left should be back (and Tony and Deeya Singh should preferably concentrate their energies on this one, rather than on Jeete Hain...on sister Sony) as also Mohalla Mohabbatwala. And if the promos are anything to go by, Anurag Basu's forthcoming show, Love Story, sounds like it's going to be worth sitting through. For the variety and quality of programming it continues to struggle to put together, I would still lay my bets on Sab.

The others continue to find the formula the safest (battered housewives continue to tell their fathers that 'a husband's house is the paradise for any woman', as one did in Zee's Betiyann recently). Kasamh Se and Jeete Hain's protagonists are threatening to go into revenge mode, wanting to extract justice for all the wrongs done to them in their marital home. Don't worry though, neither is likely to forsake husband, hearth or home to stand up for her rights. Even a Parvati gets all teary eyed when she returns to the Agarwal household every time, anyway.

Over on entertainment channels, it was a with a twinge of sadness that one had to bid adieu to Shah Rukh's KBC this week. The guy had just slipped comfortably into the skin of the character he was playing, and the wit and humour had just begun to show. But better to leave when at the top, than leave after the audience is jaded.

The same cannot be said of the several new soaps that have launched in the last few months. After an initial push of two to three weeks, they all seem to slip into auto pilot mode, preferring the conventional route taken by all soaps before them. Kaajjal , Maayka, Paraya Dhan, Virasat... none of the shows appears to have a track that's worthy of a mention. Sony's Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, which hasn't really lived up to the standards one usally associates with producers Tony and Deeya Singh, is now going in for a leap. This soon? The show has barely been on air for two months. But a leap at least temporary respite in ratings. If that too doesn't work out, will Jeete Hain... go the Kulvaddhu way? Does anyone even remember Kulvaddhu?

With Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye all set for a 20-year generation leap, the show will have two new actors playing protagonist Renuka Shahane's twins, Ayesha and Rahul. The two actors who will play the new generation leads in the show are Priya Wal and Yuvraj Malhotra. While Priya, Anvesha of Remix fame, is a fairly well-known face on television and is making her comeback after a one-year break, Yuvraj who has done a number of ad commercials, ramp shows and music videos is making his debut on TV.

Priya stayed away from TV for almost two years. During her sabbatical she traveled a lot, holidayed, played lot of tennis and did some episodic work in shows like CID, Lucky, Yes Boss and Ek Chhabhi. "It was a nice break for me and I enjoyed my holidays in Sikkim, Ooty and Delhi. Whenever I was in Mumbai I also went for weekend holidays at nearby places like Karjat and Kashed and also explored Mumbai city," says the Delhi girl who came to Mumbai three years ago to work in Remix. The former state level tennis player who never thought of acting on TV, instead preferred modelling, was keen on scriptwriting and direction. "Tennis was out because making a living from sports in India is very difficult. Modelling seemed promising," says Priya who however, fell for acting when the Remix role came her way.

"It was a very good role of a rebel rock star that came from a broken family," says Priya who plays a thorough spoilt brat in Jeete Hain. "Ayesha is a rich girl who grew up without her mother. In many ways she is today's girl, quite headstrong and wants to pursue her dream. On the other hand, Anvesha of Remix had lot of issues with her mother and broke rules and turned things upside down. But Ayesha is more feminine and loves her family."

Ask her whether Jeete Hain is the kind of show she was looking for to make her comeback and she nods positively. "It's a good show. Thankfully it's not the usual joint family drama. I didn't want to do run-of-the-mill dailies. Jeete Hain may not the be best show I was looking for but it's good and different" she reasons. "Besides it's a lead role," she justifies.

Yuvraj is also gung-ho about his debut show. Like his twin sister in the serial he too is a Delhite who came to Mumbai two years ago for his dream job, acting. though he is a qualified interior designer. He claims acting is in his blood. "My father Ashok Malhotra was a stage actor who did theatre with the likes of Raj Babbar and Satish Kaushik before they came to Mumbai to work in films. He was supposed to do Fauji which was Shah Rukh Khan's debut serial. But because of a problem my father had to quit acting and join the family business. Now I am carrying forward his acting legacy," says Yuvraj who did a lot of theatre during his school and college days.

In the last two years Yuvraj says he was offered several roles in serials. "But nothing really excited me. I was looking for a role that would go with my personality. Rahul of Jeete Hain is definitely a character that I am quite comfortable doing. He has an urban look and also has lot of attitude," smiles the young actor. Taking further about his character he says Rahul is a rich guy who loves to party a lot. "Money and a lot of pampering have spoilt him," says Yuvraj who is hoping for a perfect debut and expecting to make his presence felt on television.

Priya 'remixed' again
Priya Wal, the 'Remix' rage is back on the small screen to do the "daily-soap grind", as she calls it. Priya has been cast to play Ayesha, Ayub Khan and Renuka Shahane's daughter in 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' (Sony).

An excited Priya says, "I play a bold and cheeky character who has grown up in pain of not being raised by her mother." Any comparisons to Anvesha's character are ruled out, as Priya says, "Anvesha and Ayesha bear no resemblance to each other although on the surface they seem similar due to their sassiness. While Anvesha was mad and rebellious, Ayesha is a level-headed girl, who becomes mature after dealing with her mother's absence during her childhood."

She continues, "After 'Remix' I was offered several similar roles. Although I didn't exactly want to do the same kind of roles, I was sure that I didn't want to act in saas-bahu serials. So I chose to take up Ayesha's role. I am not looking at making acting my full time career. So I am saved from forcing myself to play the characters I don't relate to."

So what was Priya doing after 'Remix' went off-air? "I travelled a lot and met my friends," she replies. Incidentally, Priya loves to write and has recently completed writing a script about a young girl's complex life. She intends to develop it into a film in future.

Priya gets sentimental as she talks about the 'Remix' gang saying, "They are such an adorable bunch of friends. Its uncanny how Shweta Gulati (Tia) and I audition for the same roles - we seem to share a karmic bond. Karan Wahi is a sweetheart, though I don't know how many girls he is seeing at the same time!"

So is there a romantic someone in her life? "I've not yet come across anybody in the telly-industry who has swept me off my feet," she smiles.

Sounia speaks on her serial

Sounia Kapur is glad that she has ended up working in a serial and now doing a new one.Sounia will be seen in Sony's 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye' in a glamorous role.

How does it feel to be back on television after a little while?
It feels nice, of course. But I don't think I was away from television. My last serial was 'Kahiin to Hoga' which wrapped up in February and there was only a gap of a few months.

What had you been doing in the break?
During the few months that I was free, I was shooting for my Persian film and also did a few advertisements on television.

Were you anchoring stage shows abroad? Is it one of the reasons for your staying away from television?
Yes, I was on a world tour anchoring stage shows. This also led to being away from television for a bit.

Why are you so choosy about your roles?
I'm not choosy but I like to do good roles. I take up roles that attract me and the ones which I can identify with.

What led you to take up 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liiye'?
There are many reasons for it. I had never worked with Diya and Tony(Singh) and wanted to work with them. I had also been watching the serial from the first day and when I saw a few episodes, I wanted to work in the serial. Moreover, I was also keen on working with Renuka Shahane, so as soon as the role was offered to me I took it up.

What will be your character like in the serial?
I will be playing a supermodel, who is struggling presently. She has been a friend of Aman (Ayub Khan)for a few years now and now that she finds Aman single and loaded, she wants to marry him. I would not say that she is a negative character but she can be called an opportunist in life. Her ambition in life is to marry a millionaire.

It is the second time you will be working with Priya Wal. Do you share a bond with her since she played your daughter in 'Remix'?
Yes, from the very first day, I had bonded very well with Priya. We are very good friends and have always been in touch. But it is just not with her. It is with all the actors. I have known them for a long time now and it is so much fun working with them. I'm having a blast here.

You are mostly seen doing glamorous roles recently. Any particular reason for the same?
No, there are no particular reasons for it. (Laughs) I guess the producers find me glamorous and so offer me such roles and not deglamorised ones. But believe me, I look good in braided
hairs and bindi too.

Tell a little about your Persian film?
Yes the film is named Panaah and is based on the recent Afghan war and how it changed the life of people there.

What role are you playing in the film?
I'm playing an Afghani girl who is in love with a man. Now this man has to leave her for some reason and does not come back. So, she has lost him and is all alone during the war. Thus she seeks shelter in India and the shelter is given to her when she marries a man. She gets married off to a man who would provide her the much needed shelter. And let me tell you this is a deglamorised role (Laughs).

Will you be also looking out for offers from Bollywood?
Well, I have not thought about it as of now but yes if anything good comes my way, I would certainly do it.

Is the change in the spelling of your name in accordance with numerology?
Oh, I have all kinds of spelling for my name. Some spell it Souniya, some spell it as Soniya but my real spelling is Sounia Kapur, very much in accordance with
numerology.
