Jassi...'s Bindiya Bakshi set for Bollywood

'Bindya Bakshi is a very believable character'

She plays almost any character to perfection. From playing Dr Shweta in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, to playing the hilarious Bindiya Bakshi in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Jayathi Bhatia's performances undoubtedly place her as one of the top TV actresses today.

As for now, Jayathi cannot get over her role in Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal's The Vagina Monologues. "The play has proved to be a liberating experience, both for the performers as well as the audience," says the actress, who has just returned from Delhi after the play's 50th show.

A trained classical Odissi dancer, Jayathi entered the world of acting when she joined theatre veteran Ibrahim Alkazi's Living Theatre in 1992. For four years, she performed in nine plays, including A Streetcar Named Desire and Death Of A Salesman.

In 1997, Jayathi moved to Mumbai but realised that Bollywood had not matured to her liking. "I was offered roles of a rape victim or a widowed sister. Fortunately, filmmakers are more adventurous now," says this Shastri Nagar resident, who has just bagged the lead in Cinetech's yet-to-be-titled venture for Sahara TV.

"Having worked with a reputed name such as Alkazi definitely helped me. People were willing to meet me and see my work," she says.

She was soon introduced to Ektaa Kapoor who launched her in Itihaas.

After that she bagged the lead role in Kanyadaan and Kaise Kahoon.

"Kanyadaan was my signature serial, which began and ended well," she adds.

About her over-the-top character in Jassi… she says, "Bindiya Bakshi is a very believable character, as are all the others in the serial."

Jayathi is now hopeful of getting better opportunities in Bollywood.

"Considering that Bollywood is opening up I am much more hopeful of getting a role of substance now."
