"Move over Tulsi and Parvati, because I have arrived", says Noynikka Chakroborthy

by Meenakshi Shankar

Sep 18, 2008, Mumbai

From the ad world, she's back in the groove of a saas bahu saga. And the Bengali beauty, Noynikka Chakroborthy says, "This is where I always wanted to be. Doing ads and music videos were mere stepping stones to my dream destination which is doing a lead role."

Exuding confidence or is it mere 'positive thinking', Noynikka says, "I am going to be next big 'bahu' to hit the small screen. So move over Tulsi Virani and Parvathy, because Lakshmi of Jahan Pe Basera Ho has arrived."

We caught up with the actress at the press meet arranged by the channel on the launch of the new show. And she said, "I have been trying to find my footing for the last couple of years. Yes, I have been offered a large number of parallel leads, vamp and otherwise, but I always wanted to shoulder a lead role. It was that or nothing."

A thorough Mumbaiite, she says, "My household has grown up on a diet of saas bahu sagas. I have always admired Tulsi and Parvathy. They are cult images, and I always knew that I wanted to don that avataar...it was that or nothing else! And, I also knew that I had the strength to carry a show on my own."

How different is the new show slotted to go on air from September 22 from the regular fare that is dished out?

" For a change, the saas and the bahu of the show will be together!" But, wasn't that the case with Balaji's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki... because, the story line of the show and a tete a tete with Sandiip Sikchand, Creative Director, Jahan Pe Basera Ho left us with a sense of deja vu.

Jahan Pe Basera Ho is a story of a middle-class family residing in Allahabad-the Sharmas. All the 13 members of the family live in a cottage on the banks of Allahabad called Hari Nivas. It was built by Hari Prasad Sharma, his wife Savitri and their three sons. A personal effort of their love, affection, hard-work and toil Hari Nivas symbolizes and impersonificates the character of Hari Prasad Sharma himself, in the show. It's this space of happiness & peace in Hari Niwas that all the members of Sharma family come together time & again, seeking comfort, like coming back in the arms of their own beloved member Hari Prasad ... as their father, husband, mentor, a pillar to the family.

For a newcomer, our young Bengali actress is quite keen on making a mark for herself. Instead of being seen in ten different serials, Noynikka says, "This is my soap...my claim to fame. I don't want to branch out elsewhere. I was selected from an audition of 5000 girls. And when I was selected, I knew I had hit a jackpot!"

She adds, "Vamp roles were galore. I agree the tadka value and the eyeballs are far greater and the roles are far meatier than a self sacrificing bahu. But, playing a positive role is far more difficult than playing a negative."

A theater actor, who has to her credit three to four plays, our latest bahu is all set to sizzle the screen with her own brand of 'what an ideal bahu' should be all about. Yes, there is going to be melodrama...but that's what the viewer wants. There's going to be a bit of rhona dhona and shades of grey...life is a bed of roses exists only in romantic novels.

She ends our tete a tete by saying, "Main Madhuri Dixit bananaa chahati hoon! (I want to become Madhuri Dixit) to which we wondered, isn't that what all our tinsel town heroines want to become! So is Bollywood the next destination was a question we couldn't resist asking. "No. I have tried Bollywood and things didn't work out. I got a song here and there and that is not what I want to do!"

Tall claims from a young actress who has grown up on a diet of cult shows from the Balaji showcase...will Lakshmi indeed be a step above Tulsi or Parvathy or will her character be a mere shade to the cult figures of Indian Television
