The show's not about bedrooms or kitchens!'

Priya Badlani: 'Jabb Love Hua'

Director duo Tony and Deeya Singh vouch that 'Jabb Love Hua' is a tale with a difference.

Deeya declares:We are launching a new serial after two years. The last one was 'Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin'. It also feels great to be back with Zee. Our last serial 'Banegi Apni Baat' with Zee created history. 'Jabb Love Hua' is not about boardrooms, bedrooms or kitchens! This is about our roots, and the bonding we should have with our native place. Most of us have no time to visit the place from which we hail. Subsequently we tend to forget our traditions and values.

Tony's take:The concept idea came from Zee. They wanted something that would highlight the rich traditions of our country. The serial will be a walk down memory lane. The lead pair of the serial - Priya Badlani and Sudeep Sahir - were selected after many auditions.

THE PAIR
Sudeep Sahir (Raghu): This the first time I am playing the lead. In my earlier serials, 'Ayushmaan' and 'Kyun Hota Hai Pyaar', I had replaced the lead after some episodes. Since I am from Delhi, I could adopt to the native dialect used in the serial.

Priya Badlani (Aanya) I have done a lot of commercials. But this is the first time I am doing a serial. I am sure our characters will also become household names like those in Deeya and Tony's earlier serials.

The show airs tonight at 8.30 pm on Zee

When the music is striking!
Car accident marks the beginning of Jabb Love Hua

Ka ghazab hua, jabb love hua! The title song from Zee's latest show by Tony and Deeya Singh is on everyone's lips. While no one seems to be bothered about the literal meaning of the lyrics which means, 'Expect the unexpected when you fall in love', the unit members of the show were left wondering when they actually witnessed the unexpected taking place on the sets. That, too, on the first day of the shoot!

It so happened that the serial's entire unit was in Wai near Mahabaleshwar to shoot the promo of the serial. The shot required a flashy red car zooming past the poor villagers. The car was supposed to be driven by this hot-headed city girl who doesn't care about anyone around her. In order to give it an extra-lavish feel, the producers had organised a costly red sports car (a special limited edition of Honda) so that it looks authentic. Since the shot involved such an expensive car, the director made sure that the actress knew driving very well.

"The actress knew how to drive and there was no way one could have thought of such an accident taking place," says an eye witness who was present at the location when the first shot of the promo saw a huge accident. "Saari galti us gaane ki hai," he further comments adding that had it not been for the title track, the accident could have been averted. What comes to light is a very interesting story. The promo director, Jai Singh, says 'Action!', the heroine Priya Badlani starts the car, presses the accelerator pad, zooms past the camera and everyone hears the director sayings 'Cut; very nice'.

But the very next moment, they all turn to see the sports car smashed against an electric pole. "The girl was so engrossed in humming the title song that she didn't even realise that she was heading for the electric pole," adds the eye witness. Thank God there were no casualties given the fact that the pole had live electric wires hanging from it. But one thing is for sure that people, especially those who like to hum while driving, need to be careful of this electrifying tune.

Sudeep Sahir beaten black and blue

He battled with a professional wrestler for a fight scene in Jab Love Hua… who took his act too seriously

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Sudeep Sahir, the chocolate hero who plays Raghu in Zee TV's new show Jab Love Hua, recently found himself in a difficult situation during the shooting of the serial.

The scene involved a quarrel between Raghu and his girlfriend Aanya, where Sudeep's character accepts a challenge to fight a duel with a wrestler.

So Sudeep found himself face-to-face with a beefy wrestler, 6 feet 9 inches tall and as broad, on the sets.

The director suggested that they hire a body double for Sudeep for the wrestling scenes since it would be difficult for the chocolate hero to fight the big man. But Sudeep decided to play brave and insisted on doing the shot himself.

However, all his bravado vanished during the shot. "This was the wrestler's first scene and in all his excitement, he lifted me 7 feet above the ground and then threw me down with full force," says Sudeep. "It all happened so quickly that before I realised it, I was down on the ground with bruises all over my body."

And that wasn't all. Despite the unit members asking the wrestler to take it easy for the next shot, he mauled Sudeep again for the next shot as well. "In the next shot, my head was supposed to be under his arm," recounts Sudeep. "And me he squeezed my head so badly that for a second I thought I was dying! I actually began screaming for help. I tried hard to free myself from his grip but in vain. The director and others had to tell him that the shot was over before he let go of me."

Sudeep ended up gasping for breath. "I felt disoriented for half an hour after that and couldn't concentrate on anything. Anil (the wrestler) is a sweet guy but he gets really involved in his character," he laughs.

• It all happened so quickly that before I realised it, I was down on the ground with bruises all over my body

Reel disaster turns real

Gehna, of Jab Love Hua, develops an eye and face infection after using excessive glitter on the sets

Sapana Patil Poojary

Shalini Khanna, who plays Gehna on Jab Love Hua, was required to appear grotesque in a 'mela' scene, and was made up in garish face paint for the occasion, but some of the glitter entered her eyes and led to a skin and eye infection. Khanna and the rest of the cast were shooting for the sequence in Wai, a small town in Maharashtra known for its picturesque beauty. The scene was required to show Gehna being forced into getting a makeover.

Khanna says, "Since the makeover specialists are shown to be amateurs, Gehna is supposed to end up looking weird and funny. So, I was given an odd range of colour combinations for my eye and face make-up. For example, I was given a glittery blue lipstick, pink and black eye-shadow and bright red rouge for my cheeks. This weird combination caused me great discomfort while shooting and the sweltering heat only made it worse. At one point, the glitter entered my eyes and caused irritation. I couldn't even open my eyes. Nevertheless, I shot that day and requested an early wind-up, hoping the problem would get better by the end of the day. But it didn't. The eye irritation soon developed into an infection. I was very scared.'

"I couldn't bear the idea of any harm coming to my eyes. Even then, I thought it would get better after I returned home but I was wrong. We had to shoot certain parts of the 'mela' sequence again in Mumbai and had to re-apply the same odd make-up. That aggravated the situation to such an extent, that I even developed a skin infection," she says.

This time, Khanna sought the necessary medical attention. "The condition of my eyes has improved because my father and brother are ophthalmologists but my skin is till recovering from the boils and rashes. This 'mela' sequence has turned out to be quite an experience!"

Priya Badlani, the Anya has Strong Projections

They did it to R. Madhavan, Shefali Chhaya and Irrfan Khan in Banegi Apni Baat, Jennifer Kotwal and Chandana Sharma in Just Mohabbat and to Mona Singh in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. And with their latest offering Jabb Love Hua on Zee TV, which started on April 24, and currently carrying a Mela sequence, Tony and Deeya Singh are all set to do it once again, to make a star out of a newcomer. And this time, the lucky girl is Priya Badlani.

"I was plain lucky that things worked out with Tony and Deeya Singh, otherwise I wasn't very hopeful," says the newcomer adding that this serial wasn't planned but just fell into her lap, "I wanted to go for auditions and had made it very clear to my agency because I wanted to take a sabbatical from modelling. As I wanted to act, I thought this was the best way as it would help me know more about characters, roles etc. But then they (Tony and Deeya) liked me and everything fell in place."

According to the bubbly actress, casting is the most important aspect for any serial and Tony and Deeya are masters in selecting the right actor. "Tony and Deeya are very good with casting. When they audition you a couple of times, you know they are interested. It's just a process. There were a series of tests but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it."

How did she find the shift from ads to TV? "I have been into ads for almost three-and-a-half years now and have a number of big ad films to my credit. But ad films are like child's stuff when compared to either films or TV. TV is real hard work. More than six to seven scenes are bound to be canned in one day. But at the end of the day, it's a satisfying experience."

Talking about her character 'Anya' in the serial, Priya says, "My character in a nutshell, is a rich, spoilt brat. She is a girl from a very affluent family who goes through a lot of changes. She realises that there is more to life than superficial things. It's a very strong character."

Does that mean she is confident of Anya going on to become a craze like Jassi? "Well, I hope it does. I am sure lot of people will relate to it. Hope everyone would relate to it someway or the other," says a confident Priya flashing her dimples. At the same time, she was quick to clarify that her character has no similarity to Jassi and is exactly the opposite of the plain jane. "Anya's look is very glamourous. She is very bright. She comes from such a liberal background that for her wearing a short skirt or revealing clothes is not a big thing at all."

We heard that the entire serial was shot outdoors in Mahabaleshwar. How was the experience? "It was fabulous. It was great fun. Both Tony and Deeya are hard task masters and they are perfectionists. It's a different set-up from most other set-ups. It involves a lot of creativity. After working with them you emerge with a lot of experience." And her co-stars? "Sudeep (Sahir) is just amazing. He has made my job easier. Each of the characters fit the bill. Rameshwari (veteran actress) who plays Sudeep's mum is an experienced actress. I have just done two to three scenes with her till now, but the experience was wonderful."

So what now since her dream of acting in front of the camera has come true? "Wait, I didn't want to be in front of the camera, rather when I finished my graduation, I wanted to be behind it but destiny had planned otherwise. But, at the moment I am happy doing what I am doing," clarifies Priya.

Now that she is all set for stardom, is she ready for the downside, gossip, invasion of privacy etc? "At the end of the day we are all humans. Let's see how things work out. I hope I will handle all that well. But the one thing that matters most is one's work," she explains.

And what about films? Wouldn't she want to be seen on the big screen as well? "Films definitely interest me. Every actor wants to do films. But at the moment I am doing this. Let's see what's next," was her answer, but at the same time, she also lists the kind of roles she would want to do on the silver screen, "There are so many roles I would love to play. Like Sridevi in Sadma, Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. In fact I won this role (of Anya) by enacting the disagreement scene between Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in the film about whether men and women can be friends or not. I had seen the film so many times. I could enact the scene really well. I guess they kind of liked it and I was on." Priya sure has a lot of stars in her eyes. But there is indeed a long way to go before she gets to play the roles of her dreams!

Jabb Love Hua, scheduled for an April 24 delivery on Zee TV, is the tale of a young girl and the twists her life takes when she is forced to live without the luxuries she is habituated to. The show replaces Sarrkkar, in the 8:30 PM time slot.

Viewers are sure to be connected with the story of a city girl, Aanya (Priya Badlani), a Paris Hilton-meets Scarlett O'Hara type who is forced to live in a village (Dev Nagri ke Teer), where she meets Raghu (Sudeep Sahir), a man who brings Ananya to her senses. A theme dealt with in Bollywood, it is new for television.

The producer director of Sony's Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Deeya Singh and her husband Tony have moved on to Jabb Love Hua, it has been a long time since the Zee-Tony Deeya combo gave viewers the immensely successful youth-centric soap, Banegi Apni Baat, and the makers are hopeful this time, too.

Just Mohabbat and Jassi… and now Jabb Love Hua, does that make 'J' the new 'K', as JLH cast member Vivek Vaswani put it? "Yes, I'd like to believe that, since all the shows have done well." says Deeya.
