'Mom, wake up, wake up' Ranbir called as he shook Ragini awake. Ragini woke up with a start, she realised that she had fallen asleep with her head on the dining table, while waiting for Nachiket for breakfast.
Earlier, when she came into the living area, following her conversation with Dr Aman, she had been greeted with silence. Realising that Nachiket was still angry and upset with her, she welcomed the fact that he had gone down to meet the children. Their exuberance might change his mood and it would give her a perfect moment to talk. Really talk.
And now here she was, being woken up by her son.
'Nachiket?' she enquired.
Ranbir answered 'Its 9 am, Mom. Dad has already left for the Hospital, he has a surgery at 10'
He looked at her beseechingly.
'He asked me to give you a lift'
Ragini looked at her son, trying to understand the myriad feelings running through her, at that moment. She somehow controlled herself and said
'Thanks Beta. But you know what, you should go now. I will be a bit late.'
'But Mom ...' he started.
'Please ... ' Ragini's voice was now emotionless.
...
2 hrs later
Nachiket stood in his cabin, looking at the clock. His mind was in a turmoil. He squinted his eyes and ran his hand over the bridge of his nose, he was tired. And his heart was bleeding.
The surgery had gone fine and the lady would survive for sure. Dr Nachiket Khanna was a star cardiologist after all. Only that he faltered every time he desired to belong to that one person he loved the most. And true to age old saying, she was the one person he hurt the most. And in return, craved her even more, if that was even possible.
He paced inside his cabin for a while, he had case files to go through, but he couldn't concentrate. The image from the morning haunted him, he had left her dozing off on the dining table, in front of the breakfast that she had prepared for themselves, properly laid out. He had still been mad at her when he had returned upstairs later, he had had breakfast with the children downstairs. He had quickly gotten ready and left.
He stepped out of his cabin, a little later, he had to use the restroom. And then he saw her speaking to Dr Kumar, who had treated her earlier during the accident.
'Mrs Khanna, you need to take more care of yourself' Dr Kumar said, as he handed over a file to her.
'The fractures have healed nicely, but you are exerting yourself. I think you should go slow for a bit, and then pick up pace. Also I need you to take those calcium capsules everyday'
Ragini nodded obediently as they walked away to the other side of the corridor. She looked as beautiful and elegant as always, in a deep blue printed silk saree, Nachiket noticed.
The kiss from the morning invaded his mind and his lips tingled.
His eyes drank in her sight and then suddenly his heart lurched.
His eyes were now stuck on the dark blue hairpin that held her hair together, in a bun ...
... The first time since their marriage
