Ragini looked at the flowers that he had left behind on the small table by her bedside, before he had gone with the Doctor. She smiled though the effort hurt her badly. He had not forgotten, she realised as she looked at the white lilies. Her favourite flowers.
And then there was the blue shirt. She had noticed alright. He was trying to cheer her up. She knew she was hurt badly, she couldn't move her limbs much, and she was still under the effects of anaesthesia.
She longed for her children. What if this was the end? she thought, as her eyes closed on her own volition and she slipped into an uncomfortable sleep.
...
Nachiket stood in front of Dr Trivedi, looking at the files intently. He was slightly happy - the report indicated that there were no internal complications; the haemorrhage was due to the compound fracture on her right leg. There were multiple bruises on her ribs and all over, the best thing was that luckily her head had escaped any fatal injuries.
He knew that this would take time, but he realised that with proper rests, medication she would pull through.
As if on cue, the Doctor continued
'She has a frail constitution. She will need proper care for weeks now.
We will run a few tests today evening and then decide if we could shift her out of the ICU.'
Nachiket nodded as the implications of the Dr's words sank in. He went back to her cabin, and coaxed his mother in law to return home, and take rest.
Ragini was sleeping once again. He sat down on the chair in front of her and studied his face. This was going to be difficult for all of them, he knew. After all, it has been Ragini who had nurtured them throughout. And even when they were apart, he had never for a moment thought of her lying helpless, and ill, on a hospital bed. He hid his face in his hands and sobbed
'Nachiket ... Nachiket' she called him again and again. Her frail voice reached his ears eventually and he wiped away his tears. He got up from the chair and leant in front of her, her words now mere whispers.
'Please ... don't cry ... i am sorry ... it hurts all over' she said as she gasped slightly
'Sweetheart' he said as he gently touched her cheek, her eyes flying open
'The kids?' she asked.
'Safe at home, I sent them back ... they will be back soon' his hand now held onto her cold fingers.
'Nachiket' she called again, her voice a bit more stronger this time.
'Promise me you will take care of the kids if something happens to ... me'
His lips touched hers reverentially as tears threatened to spill over
'I promise Ragini, nothing will happen to you. To us. You are gonna be fine. Nothing will ever come in between us, not even this.'
When the children came to visit their Mother, they found them sleeping peacefully - she, on her hospital bed, and he, on the sterile chair by her bed, their fingers laced together.
