I am learning a lot about the class system in India while watching this show, and I find Pam's constant degrading of people by accusing them of being middle-class highly offensive.

I wonder if the real middle-class viewers who watch this show also find Pam offensive?

She was very rude to Ashaben, in her own home, by pulling her cheeks and calling her illiterate and middle-class. 😔. Wow, do people really go about insulting other people because of their social class? I hope not! This can't happen in real life surely!

The class differentiation mainly seems to stem from how Western one appears in dress, social customs and food habits. If you wear jeans, eat toast for breakfast and drink green tea, and the occasional glass of wine, you are upper class. If you wear sarees and eat dhokla for breakfast, you are middle class. This all relates to how rich you are and if you can afford jeans, toast, green tea and wine!

So what is so wrong with being middle-class?

If I ever get the opportunity to visit the land of my forebears, I want dhokla and real Indian chai, thank you!😃

Actually, the character of Pam is very stupid and irritating. It's only Ashwini who makes it worthwhile.

Yes I found the way she insulted Ashaben in an implied manner very offensive and also the way she always keeps saying "Ragini has no class"...has she considered her own so called status and conduct? Ragini is a financially independent woman with a lot of grace and dignity. Pam only knows how to throw her weight around and bask in the glory of her brother's wealth and reputation.

Thank you for your replies. We all agree that Pam is an annoying character.

But what I was trying to ask is do you as a middle-class person, find Pam's constant ways of referring to middle-class as somehow demeaning?

Do you sit there cringing or do you get annoyed or even angry when Pam, the character, starts berating the middle-class?

Do you even consider yourself middle-class? Is it something people don't want to admit to?

Just curious!

Thanks in advance for your replies!

I am a person hailing from a middle class family but I have never felt that I have lacked for anything in my life. Yes, Pam's constant berating of middle class people does get on my nerves.

Yes, but to a large extent she is a caricatured version of those who live off the social divide. She is nothing more than another woman hobnobbing with gossiping, make-up women of her class.

Her constant deriding of Ragini and her family only shows that she is not a person who has doesn't have the self-sustaining capacity nor has she even attempted to do so. The fragility of her "high class" image has been exposed through a mere phonecall.

Yes I do ... I cringe when she deliberately goes on insulting Ragini and her side of the family, for no apparent reasons. And I get annoyed as well. Most of the times, I mute my TV when she is on screen.

Class nowadays is mainly defined by the financial status more than family linearity and other aspects. Most of the times, at least. Again, the middle class generally has two segments - upper and lower.

Most people in India belongs to middle class. I come from a middle class family and it has definitely not hindered me much. Irrespective of the rampant class divide, I think what is more important is the upbringing of a child and the family values he/ she has been inculcated with.

As per her behaviour, Pam is definitely NOT high class. She is not even snooty or hard nosed, she is plain pathetic.

The truth is its Pam who has no class to begin with.she just raised the kids and so did Ragini. She did that without the support of anyone.Pam always had Nachiketh money for the support. But Ragini is working woman who has to work hard to earn the money.
Its different thing that her set of kids have yet to realise what great sacrifice she did for them.
