"Nachiket!" He heard her. He had been drinking for the past few hours but he wasn't getting drunk. It was the day. In some corner of the city, Ragini was getting married to Aman. So when he heard her, he thought he was dreaming. He gulped down the remaining whiskey in his glass in one go and started to fill the glass again. Just then, someone took the bootle of whiskey away from his hand.
"Nachiket" he heard her again and this time, he looked up at the source of the voice, the voice that could only belong to one person.
They both looked at each other for a long time. Neither of them said a word. She looked at him and saw how much she still affected him and he looked at her face, the face of someone who had lost everything in her life.
"Dr. Neil" Aman said and brought both Nachiket and Ragini to reality. Nachiket looked at him, surprised at finding them here and asked Aman, "Aap yahan kya kar rahe h, Dr. Aman?"
"Nachiket, hamare divorce papers ki tumhari copy kahan h?" Ragini asked and Nachiket looked at her, confused.
"Kyun? Kya hua?" He asked her.
"Mujhe dekhni h.. Kahan h vo papers?" She asked again.
"Yahi par h. Dimpy k paas." He said, standing up from the chair.
"Dimpy k paas kyu?" Aman asked.
"Kyu ka kya matlab? Dost h meri. Rakh sakta hu main uske paas kuch bhi. Aur hamare divorce k baad main US chala gaya tha. Court mein maine Dimpy ka address dia tha. To islie yahan aai copy." Nachiket said.
"Aapne kabhi unhe US mein mangwane ka nahi socha?" Aman asked.
"Main kya karu kya na karu ye mera faisla h." Nachiket told Aman and looking at Ragini, again spoke, "Ye kya ho raha h, Ragini?" He could see the tears brimming in her eyes but she wasn't looking angry or hurt. It was something else. He couldn't figure out the emotion.
"Ragini, ye rahe papers" Dimpy said handing over the brown envelope to Ragini. Everyone entered Nachiket's room now. Pam, Nivedita, all the kids, everyone was looking at Ragini.
"Aapne bhi ye papers kabhi is envelope se nahi nikale?" Aman asked.
"Dr. Aman, Maine aapko abhi bola ki main kya karu ya kya na karu ye mera faisla h. And anyways, what are you doing here? Aaj to aapki shaadi.." Nachiket couldn't complete the sentence as Ragini grabbed his elbow and made him look at her. She had taken the papers out of the envelope and gave him the papers to read. He looked at her, the tears were rolling down her cheeks now but he still couldn't figure out the emotion behind those tears.
He took the papers from her hand and started reading.
He read the papers and looked at her. He could not think anymore. Could this really happen? He thought.
"I could never open mine." Ragini said and both of them looked at each other. He was looking at her. After all they have been through, after all the misunderstandings, all the fights, those years of separation.. Did it really had to come to this? And then, the emotion behind her tears became crystal clear to him. She was relieved and thankful.
"Neil, ye sab kya ho raha h?" Pam asked.
Nachiket looked at Pam and standing beside her, his kids, Suhani, Aagham, Aarav and Ranbir.
"Dr. Aman, aaj to aapki shaadi h na Ragini se.. Aapko to court mein hona chahiye.. Aap yahan kya kar rahe h?" Nivedita asked Aman.
Aman looked at her but didn't reply. He came near Ragini, took her hand and started pulling her towards the door, "Lets go Ragini"
Before Ragini could realize what happened, she found herself pulled back and with such a force that her hand was freed from Aman's hold. Nachiket had pulled her behind him as he said to Aman, "Don't you dare touch my wife ever again!"
"Dr. Neil.. Dekhie.." Aman started saying but was cut my Nachiket.
"I said don't. I don't want you to even breathe in the same air as my wife. Do you understand?"
Aman didn't say anything and left the room.
"Wife? Dad, Mom, ye sab kya h?" Aagham asked, confused.
Nachiket looked at everyone.
"Neither of us opened the copies of our papers. The envelope had a paper which said the original copies of our papers were burnt in a fire accident in the court. We had to sign the papers again for the process to complete."
"Does that mean..?" Dimpy said, looking at Nachiket and Ragini.
"Yes. Ragini and I are still married." Nachiket said to the shocked expressions of everyone. No one said anything for a few seconds.
"I want everyone out of the room now." Nachiket said, "Mujhe Ragini se baat karni h"
"Neil..Tum ye.." Pam started saying but Nachiket cut her off.
"Pam.. Out.. Now." He said and saw Aagham and Suhani's faces. Both of them had the biggest grin on their faces.
Everyone was out of the room and Nachiket locked the room from inside.
He came back to where he had left Ragini who was crying silent tears. He stood near her and called her name, his voice full of emotions.
As he said her name, Ragini started sobbing hard and sat on the ground.
Nachiket sat in front of her and held her hands.
"Ragini.. Meri taraf dekho" he said, tears streaming down from his own eyes. Ragini was crying and moved her head from left to right, saying no, she couldn't. Nachiket could barely make out what she was saying.
"I'm sorry, Nachiket. I am sorry. I don't know why I was marrying Dr. Aman. I am sorry. I know I've hurt you. I'm sorry." Ragini said in between her sobs, still looking at the ground.
"Shhh.. Ragini.. Don't say sorry. Galti meri hi h.. Mujhe tumhe nahi chodke Jana chahiye tha.. I am sorry.. Tumne kuch galat nahi Kia.." Nachiket said as he cleaned Ragini's face with his hands and made her look at him.
"Dekho meri taraf.. Ragini.." Nachiket said as both of them looked at each other with tears in their eyes, "hum dono kabhi bhi ek doosre ko apne dilo se nahi nikal paae.. Ek kagaz ki tukde ki wajeh se alag rahe.. Aur vo kagaz ka tukda bhi hamein alag nahi kar paya.. We're meant to be, Ragini. We're meant to be."
Ragini looked at him, hearing the words that she had always wanted to hear. Nachiket bent forward and kissed her tear stricken face. After kissing both her cheeks one by one, he looked at her, his eyes asking for permission to kiss her on her lips. Another tear rolled down her eyes and her eyes said yes. He bent forward as his lips touched hers. She didn't respond for a few seconds and Nachiket was afraid he might have read her eyes wrong but then she responded to his kiss. The kiss didn't evoke the feelings of passion or sensuality. They didn't event felt the physical intimacy. But still, it was the best kiss they had ever had. It was a slow and long kiss. They didn't hurry, like they always did. Neither of them tried to dominate. It felt like they were telling each other they were going to be there always. Their souls had met once again. They felt at peace. The kiss felt like coming home for the first time, in a long time.
