Neil loved her, there was no doubt.. But there was also no doubt she loved him more. Or that's what he thought.. Because while loving her was second nature to him now, he was always surprised by things she did for him. If he weren't in love, he'd treat those things as excess, but he loved the attention and dedication now.


It was an hour back when she'd called and he was preparing for his next surgery. The squirmy nurse was now holding his phone to his ear and he felt a little colour spreading through his own cheeks
They were the talk of the hospital for many months now. No one could believe they were married.

A whirlwind affair, very publicly in love and married in two months, all the nurses had looked at Ragini with an envious look when she rejoined work.. Now on the phone with her, he sounded apologetic.. He was assigned this surgery out of schedule.. She sensed it and rescued him before he could say sorry.
She told him not to worry and that she'd wait for him.. He quickly told her not to, because the surgery would take a couple of hours.

She sighed over the phone and Neil could feel something physically contract in his chest when she said she had cooked for him. Not knowing what to say, he just sighed from the other end as well. She picked up the tone in her voice and told him she loved him and to focus solely on the surgery.

The nurse holding up the phone for him was obviously getting impatient and wanted him to hang up soon. However, Neil was not one of those who said his 'I love you' in public. He said a terse bye on the phone, saying he had to rush and moved his ear away before he could hear Ragini's response. On the other hand, Ragini was in the process of saying something when the phone disconnected. She was a tad disappointed.. she knew he was busy, but why could he not communicate back? She would have loved for him to say something, anything before keeping the phone.. maybe she was overthinking.. she willed herself to think about something else.. but she loved him too much to question him at the moment. He was her dream come true.

Neil sighed inwardly again as he looked at the X-rays on the board. It was going to be a draining operation.. lots of finesse and technique required. Though he had an assisting surgeon, it was still going to be very tough. His mind drifted to Ragini and her beautiful eyes, and he thought about how they must have looked when he told her not to wait up for him. She loved doing those things for him, maybe it was wrong of him to say that to her.. to tell her not to wait and go to sleep. And to top it, she had cooked for him. It was a special first that he should not have undermined. Ragini was not your girl next door. She had spirit, a strong will and was fiercely independent.. some of the many things that made him fall in love with her. She was so dedicated to her career that domestic skills were on the bottom of her list.

She did not know how to cook and he had absolutely no problem with that.. but for some strange reason, she had started domesticating herself, thinking it would make him happier. He'd never been married before so he had no way to tell if this happened with every husband in the world but he wished she would not change herself so much for him, for his sake and hers. He had teased her about cooking once, since he was a decent cook. That day, he'd made some poached eggs for her and they had breakfast in bed.. pampering her was something he loved, and he mocked her with a breakfast challenge for the next day. The both of them had laughed it over.. but at 7 am the next day, there she was.. with a half burnt fried egg and decent coffee.. he gulped it down before planting a big kiss on her cheek.. full marks for trying.. but Ragini knew she had messed up and was somehow guilted into trying better for him.. he didn't want that.. and now he didn't know how to stop it..

Torn between the surgery and wanting to go home to his wife of a few months, Neil wondered how much effort had gone into tonight's 'cooking' and gave one final big sigh before mentally clearing his head for the difficult surgery ahead..
