CHAPTER 16

Khushi couldn't go to Raizada house the next day as Aakash required her presence in a meeting conducted in connection with the construction of the hotel.The work was to start in the next month and Aakash was so excited about it.The next few days were busy and Khushi and her colleagues were thrilled in trying out new patterns and designs and finally submitted their proposal to Aakash.Arnav and Khushi met many times in the office but never got an opportunity to talk alone.Khushi was always aware of his intense gaze on her but avoided him at her best.Further,Arnav spent the holidays taking Raj to the specialist who came from U.S.

One month passed by.It was Raj's birthday.Khushi ,Rohan,Sooraj joined Raizada family for the celebration.The day was spent with music and good food. Khushi totally avoided Arnav and she was feeling relieved as she saw him going out with Aakash Aman,Rohan and Sooraj after food.As all were taking afternoon nap, khushi decided to complete the paint work on saree. She was enjoying her work listening to music .One hour passed by .As her work was over she decided to take a look at the enormous collection of books in the big reading room in the house where Raizada members rarely visited.She could see a big carom board,chess board,a big arm chair, a big mahagony table,huge cupboards with books,pictures of Arnav's forefathers on the walls,beautiful paintings,fresh flowers and many antique pieces.It was the first time she entered that room and she was so overwhelmed by the way it was kept neat and tidy.She liked reading and was excited to see the books and started opening the cupboards with too much excitement.She didn't realize the time passing by.Her mobile rang and she was startled by its sound.It was Payal.She was asking why Khushi had not reached home yet.She told she was waiting for Rohan to take her home.She went in serach of Anjali and saw her coming from her room with sleepy eyes.

Anjali:Khushi,come let's have a cup of tea

Khushi:Let me call Rohan,why is he not coming to pick me?

At that moment the door bell rang.Hariprakash opened the door and they saw Arnav coming in.Anjali asked:Where are others?

Arnav:They are with Aakash,will come late only

Khushi:Di,then I'm going home because tomorrow is my friend's marriage.I want to start early morning.

Arnav:I...I'll ..drop you.

Anjali:Eh...?

Khushi couldn't even respond.

Anjali:Chote..what happened?You are normal know?

Arnav:As it is getting dark,it's not safe for her to go alone,that's why.

Khushi;I'll go alone.

Arnav:No,come with me.

He led the way and Khushi had no other way but to obey him.She gave a quick buy to Nani and Raj and left with a wildly beating heart.She opened the back door .Then he said:I'm not your driver.Then a reluctant Khushi sat in the front seat fully aware of his presence.They were silent and Khushi found the silence very suffocating.He stopped the car near her flat and as she was going to open the door,he took out a small packet from the back seat and gave it to her.She looked at him questioningly.He said:Open it.She looked at him doubtfully and slowly opened it.She was totally surprised to see beautiful green bangles inside.She was so overwhelmed by its beauty that she stared at the bangles and smiled excitedly.She touched it and as was about to take it out she remembered where she was and who presented it.Suddenly she looked at him sharply but was shocked to see his expression on his face.She had never seen him looking at her like that.Was it compassion?,admiration?concern?Suddenly his expression changed.He said:I thought I would replace the broken bangles.

Khushi:There was no need.It was my fault.

Arnav:Try it,see whether it fits you.

Khushi:later.

Arnav:No,now itself.

A reluctant Khushi started trying the bangles and was not prepared for the next move of Arnav.He took her hand and put the rest of the bangles with ease on her right hand. He looked into her eyes,still holding her hands.Both were holding their breath.Then he bent his head and brushed his lips on her hand.She couldn't move but sat still.Then he raised his head and whispered:Bye Khushi.She somehow managed to open the door and reach her room.She couldn't believe what happened.

Later at home,she opened her cupboard and took out the kumkumbox given by Anjali and sat on the bed.She recalled her first meeting with Arnav.Then she looked at her bangles,touched it and had a strange feeling.What is he trying to do?Khushi had to tell a lie when Payal asked about the new bangles.

At Raizada house Arnav was looking at Khushi's picture in his mobile.What is she to him?Why is he moved by her tears?

Aman told him the other day that Khushi visited a temple and an orphanage nearby the temple ,every month.He came to know from Aman that she sold a major part of her jewellery given by her grandmother for helping the orphans and old age people.But she never wanted to speak about it. He also told that Khushi was fond of a particular child in the orphanage and actually it was to see him that she was going every month there.Aman came to know about it through Rohan and he requested Aman not to ask Khushi anything regarding it.Arnav found it very intriguing and he was inquisitive to know more.

Arnav was assessing his approach towards her.There is something irresistible about her.Sometimes she makes him happy,some times angry,jealous,irritated,confused as no other girl had influenced him,not even Megha.He also found it strange that his feelings regarding Megha also was changing as passing of time though at times it makes him sad and depressed.He came to know from Anjali that Megha was coming to India shortly and he couldn't deny the truth that he was eager to meet her.He cannot forget her,though she was no longer his.

The work of the hotel started.Khushi and her colleagues were called one day to Arnav's office and were asked to visit his new home in the country side which was once Khushi's home and to give their expertise in finishing the work along with the team working there.Khushi found it difficult to meet his gaze and often looked away as he spoke.

Anjali's marriage date was fixed.Arnav wanted to conduct all the ceremonies in the new home.Anjaly,Payal ,Khushi and Anjaly's friends stsrted shopping.A team of dress designers arrived one day evening in Raizada house and tried different designs on Anjali.All the girls were very excited about the function to happen though Anjali at times recalled her first marriage and felt depressed sometimes.

The renovation work of Raizada mansion was over and Nani wanted the house warming and pooja in the month of Holi.All welcomed her opinion because it was a reunion time for almost all the relatives and friends residing in different parts of the world.Gupta family was on the host side as Nani felt how they loved their ancient home and how important was that home to them.Khushi was happy to see her dear home back in elegance. She was astounded by the transformation of the structure.

.She was dressed in a designer lehenga selected by Anjali.She was looking extremely pretty and elegant.She didn't go down to receive the guests,instead spent time in her favourite room where Arnav met her first.She opened the door to the balcony .By standing there she had a full view of the courtyard and the entry of the building.Her heart began to beat fast as she saw Arnav standing elegantly in a dark suit receiving guests.He was extremely handsome and without knowing ,her hands went to her chest as though to check its wild beating.While receiving guests,he was looking around as though searching for some one.Then she saw her.A woman dressed in a beautiful saree was entering the courtyard with Sooraj,hugged Anjali and Nani.She heard Anjali addressing her.Megha,what a pleasant surprise,It's ages I saw you.She had her eyes only on him.Megha stood there staring at Arnav.It was an awkward moment but Arnav came forward and shook hands with her.But Megha avoided it and hugged him which Khushi felt was unexpected and embarrassed him and others.Arnav immediately withdrew himself and led her inside.Khushi suddenly felt dispirited,disappointed and depressed.She scolded herself.what's wrong with you Khushi?What's your problem?She suddenly heard Payal asking for her.Anjali di,Did you see Khushi?

Khushi decided to go down.As she was getting down the stairs she heard some one saying.That is captain's daughter know?

"Yes,She is settled in California .

.She was once Arnav's girl friend.She should not have come here again to create problem.See the way she is clinging to him.She is married know?

Khushi didn't wait to hear more.She went back upstairs.She couldn't hold back her tears.She asked herself:Why?Why?Why I'm crying?What's wrong with me?

She heard a movement behind her.She turned abruptly and saw Payal standing there with a confused expression.She asked:Why Khushi?why are you here?Every one is asking for you?

Khushi:I'm not coming jeeji,today is the last day that I can spend some time here.Afterwards it is not right know?I'll come after sometime.

Payal left as she understood her feelings.Khushi again went back to the balcony.She could feel the aroma of the flowers coming through the cool wind.Her hair flew into her face as the wind blew around her. She turned around as she heard someone closing the door to the balcony .To her utter shock and disbelief she saw Arnav coming towards her.So this is where you are hiding.It took a few minutes for her to compose herself.

She said:Hiding?

Arnav:Yes,why didn't you come down?

He came nearer.Though she was afraid,she was very happy to see him there.She wondered at her feelings.

He stood very near her.She thought:Oh my God!which perfume he is using?He is smelling good.She couldn't believe what she heard next.Khushi,I was searching for you.

Khushi:Wh...Why?...

Arnav:be..because Ra..Raj asked for you.

Khushi:Oh!

She continued after a pause.Then let us go down.As she was about to move he asked:Why are you looking sad?You are not happy that your home is now renovated ?

Khushi said quickly:It's not my home now.It's yours.Her hair was coming to her face due to wind.He was observing it.She found it difficult to manage her hair and to her utter shock she saw his hands coming up and the next second he tucked her hair back slowly.His hands touched her cheeks and neck slightly and a shiver passed through her body.She was scared when Arnav came nearer .She immediately stepped back.Then he asked:Khushi..are you afraid of me?

Khushi:In fact,yes..why are you behaving like this to me?some times you are angry at me,sometimes you are showing concern.Why?

Arnav was silent.He continued to look at her.She couldn't meet his gaze.So he said:Look at me Khushi. Khushi slowly looked at his face and was spellbound by his mesmerizing eyes . Both of them were not aware that the door of the balcony was opened and some one was watching them.Arnav broke the silence.Let us go.He offered her hand and without knowing she placed her hands in his.They stood there looking at each other for a few seconds and as Arnav was going to bend his head towards her that they heard a woman's voice calling him.Both turned at once to see Megha standing at the doorway.Megha couldn't take her eyes from the gorgeous Khushi standing beside him,her hands in his.She tried to take her hands away but Arnav continued firmly holding it.After an awkward moment he spoke:Khushi..this is Megha,my ...my friend.Megha,this is Khushi...my..

Khushi said abruptly;:Hello,

Megha:hello.She shook hands with Khushi and gave her a cold stare.Khushi felt uncomfortable.

Arnav turned to Khushi and spoke softly:Khushi,Raj is looking for you.Let us go down to the guests.

The three of them went down.Megha felt that she can never forget the way Arnav looked at Khushi .

She understood that Arnav was attracted to Khushi .

Why the cold stare? She left and got married didn't she?
