CHAPTER 4 : KUSHI's FAMILY

Gazing at the ocean, Kushi's mind drifted to her childhood. Her life started in the same neighborhood by the beach. Kushi had spent the first 14 years of her life in a shack in this backyard with her family, that is herself, Bhai and Raghu. Her childhood memories were fresh on her mind. She tagged Raghu and Bhai everywhere. Their daily routine begun at 5.00 in the morning, wash the cars in the neighborhood (that was their livelihood) and rush to the government school. The Kashyaps's owned around 6 cars and they made a whole sum of money from a single house. Kushi never had an ensemble of friends... except Lavanya whom she met when she was 9 years old. She was the youngest daughter of the Kashyap's. The first time Kushi saw Lavanya she fell in love with her . She was dressed in a beautiful pink dress with frills, hair bands and pretty as a princess. After all these years, thirteen to be exact, against all the odds, difference in the background, the hatred that the Kashyap's had for Kushi and her family their friendship flourished.

They were happy, hard working with big goals in front of them. This was because they had to tend themselves and learnt too early in life that they needed to work extremely hard compared to those who had a normal childhood. They had a very pleasant childhood with fun all around. No matter how odd it was , without parents, they were a family. Occasionally Raghu used to get angry with Kushi as he felt that she was a wedge between himself and Bhai. Raghav and Bhai were truly good friends always there for each other. But as Kushi started growing, Bhai had to spend more time with her. Raghav used to call Kushi " Chipkali" (lizard) for her constant presence around.

Kushi's forever dream is for herself, Bhai and Raghu to live happily and they would show to the world that three orphans can achieve with their own will and effort. She was living the dream of her brother that she has to be a doctor. Raghu and herself will very soon graduate to become doctors. Their childhood was marred by two incidents which made Kushi both desolate and stronger. It started with the Kashyaps and ended with Raghu. The incident also changed the dynamics between Bhai and Raghu. Ironically Kushi did become a wedge between the two friends and for the last 9 years she has been trying to cement their friendship. Today, Raghu is more of her buddy than Bhai's. Kushi adored her Bhai and would do anything her Bhai wanted... She would challenge her brother only for Raghu ... he was Kushi's soul friend... has been with her during the best and the worst times of her life. He was the second person, who saw her after she was born. Such ties are stronger than blood ties.

For certain reasons people in her life are angry with each other. Like Bhai and Raghu don't talk to each other, Bhai and Lavanya avoid each other. Strangely, we all care for each other. Kushi's mind was flitting from one person to another and her mind became sedated and she drifted to sleep. Time passed with sun bright and beating on her, finally the warmth woke her up. She got up, stretched and looked at her watch, it showed 9.30am. She rushed down the rocks and jogged back to home. She messaged her friends that she was back home and would meet them at 5pm near the college gate. Since it was her birthday, Raghu knew that she would be disturbed and so was concerned. Her brother asked her to meet him at his office for lunch. Kushi never keeps away from college but the day was such that she needs to spend time by herself for self - realization. As she missed her classes, she took her books and started reading. Time flew and she looked at her clock and realized that it was 2pm. Late for lunch! She messaged Bhai the she would meet him at his office.

Bhai had changed his job to AR designs three months earlier. Kushi entered the building and was overwhelmed by the size of the office. "

"Hope they pay Bhai handsomely!"

She went to the reception and asked for Akash Gupta. The lady was in a rush to leave and showed her Bhai's cabin. she was pleasantly surprised that her brother had a private cabin. He truly deserved it !!!!. The receptionist said Bhai was in a meeting and would be out very soon. She looked at her watch and it was 3pm and she was hungry. She told the receptionist that she would wait for Akash Gupta in the canteen. The canteen was on the terrace with a great view. She took a cheese sandwich and started enjoying it, when suddenly the chair in front of her was pulled and some one sat abruptly and angrily...
