The whole area near Khushi's home was decorated like a new bride. Every single resident of the area seemed to be busy with one work or the other. On one end of the playground, men were erecting a mandap and decorating it. The other end found women cooking in large quantities. Few ladies were fighting with the florist for not bringing the right shade of roses. The kids were running around having a gala time. Looking at the decorations and the ruckus going on, any outsider would check their calendar to see if they have missed any important festival. Such was the festive mood in Laxmi Nagar. If you asked any resident of Laxmi Nagar they would tell you the reason with a joy rivalling that of a kid who got two scoops of his favorite ice cream. It was their beloved Khushi Kumari Gupta and Arnav Singh Raizada's wedding. The whole of Laxmi Nagar has split itself into two groups one from the bride's side and the other from the groom's side celebrating the wedding.
Khushi looked outside her window staring gleefully at the happenings. She wanted to run outside and help in everything that she can but all the maasi's and chachi's of Laxmi Nagar had strictly banned her from coming out. She pouted thinking of all the fun she was missing out on even with her friends sitting around her.
"Betiya, have this and take rest. You don't want to look like ghost in the evening now, do you?" Garima gave her a glass of juice and caressed her hair. Her eyes teared-up looking at her daughter all grown up. Wasn't it just yesterday that she and Shashi took this little bundle of joy in their arms and dreamt of her future? She hugged Khushi looking at her husbands' photo silently asking him if he was happy with how his daughter had grown up. Sensing that the atmosphere was getting a little too melancholic as Khushi's eyes moistened, Sarita, Khushi's best friend decided to tease her.
"HaanHaan Khushi. Do take rest now. After all it's going to be a looong night." Sarita giggled as she stressed on long night.
Khushi, having caught on to the allusion, blushed a deep crimson and whined "Amma..." This had been the case for the past week. It was either "Arnav" or "Amma" coming out of her mouth in a whine whenever she was teased. Khushi Kumari Gupta the Express Train of Laxmi Nagar found herself tongue tied every time she was teased. "All because of that Laad Governor" Khushi thought with a smile. He had literally kidnapped her from their sangeet to spend some time with her. For a person who abhorred sweets, his lips had tasted sweeter than her jelabis. Khushi mentally shook herself. She put a full stop to her thoughts from wandering into the dangerous territories.
Garima laughed and patted her and turned to Sarita.
"Sarita make sure she drinks this and sleeps. I have to pack the necessities for her."
"Sure maasi."
Sarita made Khushi drink the juice and after a few minutes of light hearted teasing and lots of blushing from Khushi, Sarita and their friends left Khushi to take rest.
Being alone in the room Khushi thought of the person who was the sole reason for her happiness today. Arnav Singh Raizada. That man had captured her thoughts when he was a stranger and when she had finally known him, he had captured her heart and soul.
After the night in rain, when Arnav had come to her rescue, things had taken a turn for the good. Arnav had been receptive to her and she had made sure to be with him at every given opportunity. To Arnav's credit, he did not push her away. The initial few days were filled with awkward pauses and Khushi filling it with some inane chatter. The awkward pauses had emerged into comfortable silences that both had not felt the need to fill with words.
She spoke to him about anything and everything that she can think of; from the cars in Happyji's garage to the rose plant that Pintu was growing for his home science project. Khushi almost laughed out loud remembering the bewildered expression Arnav had when she had gone on and on about her favorite Salman Khan movies. As he had got used to her, his bewilderment had changed into amusement. Her enthusiasm had forced him to respond on many occasions. They shared a friendship that Arnav had always found difficult to find.
On one such occasion, when she had explained in detail about Sarita's college, Arnav had asked her why she did not continue her education. Arnav remembered that she had enrolled for B.Sc. Accountancy. Shetold him that she had to drop out of college when Shashi had been terminally ill and they had to work as much as they could to make ends meet. Even though they are now financially stable, Khushi could not afford to go to college as it will put more strain on her aging mother. She had been assisting by taking tuitions to the children in their area. Khushi could still not believe all that happened after this particular conversation. Arnav had offered a part time job in his boutique on a condition that she should rejoin her college. He would pay her college fees as her salary. Life had become busy after that. Every day, Khushi took tuitions early in the morning, and then left for her classes. She would join Arnav in the boutique for lunch and continue with her part time job. After shutting the shop, Arnav would drop her home. And they followed this routine for the next two years. Khushi fell asleep thinking of the wonderful moments she spent with Arnav.
Garima did not have any issues with this as she knew Khushi was safe with Arnav. During the initial days, when Khushi had gone to meet him without listening to her, she had seen Arnav leave the front door open, placing a chair right in front of the front door and be seated on it the whole time Khushi was in his house. He had never tried to make any physical contact with Khushi. He maintained a respectable distance from her always. She knew then than she can trust him with her daughter.
"Aunty... You need something?"
Garima gave a mock angry look to the young woman who addressed her. Anjali Singhania looked at Garima apologetically.
"Sorry Amma... You need something?" Garima smiled appreciatively.
"Nothing beta... What is Arnav doing? Have you made him to take rest?"
"No Amma. I tried but he doesn't listen to me anymore. He said he wants to make it perfect for Khushi."
"Where is he now?"
"Near the mandap."
Garima and Anjali made their way towards the mandap.
"Arnav... What are you doing here? You were helping with the preparations for the past few days. No one would believe that you are the groom if they see you now. Go take some rest."
"Par Amma..."
"I don't want to hear anything. Go inside right now."
Arnav left the place with a sigh and a smile. Garima had given him the mother's warmth that he craved for. She had not forced anything on him but let him guide her in his own pace as to what he wanted from her. Khushi had spoken so much about her that his respect for her had grow with each incident that Khushi has narrated. He had started calling her Amma in his mind that it had slipped out one day. When he looked at her, all that she had done was to smile and nod her head giving him the approval to call her that.
As he reached his room to rest, his thoughts turned to Khushi. She had brought the happiness in his life in an intensity he never dared to dream before and still feels difficult to accept. But he would never question her instincts. He would follow her lead. If that would lead to happiness he has nothing to lose. Hadn't he seen that himself?
The day had started just like every other day. After giving the part time job to Khushi, he had got some time to concentrate on his designs. With Khushi efficiently manning the shop, he would be cooped up in the little studio at the back letting his creativity run free without constant interruptions. He had gifted Khushi a beautiful peacock green anarkali for her birthday and that had been an instant success in her college. The orders for many such anarkalis had come in and Arnav was struggling with it. Khushi had convinced Arnav to employ some tailors to do the job while he took care of the designing and cloth selection. That had been a tremendous success.
Khushi had literally forced him to enter the fashion show organized by the biggest fashion house of the country, MS fashions. She was so sure that his bridal range would win the show hands down. He had been working on that when Khushi had told him about Garima wanting her to get married. This news disturbed him a lot.
They had become good friends over time and before he knew it, he was in love with her. The feeling had kept growing in him that he soon reached a point when he had to tell her to survive. He had taken time to realize it was love and when he had he had told her in plain words.
"Khushi, I love you." That is all that he had said to her when she entered the shop next day. Khushi had stood staring at him intently, looking straight into his eyes. All that she had said was
"You need to try better Arnavji."
He had been confused for a while not understanding why she said so. But he consoled himself saying she had not yet rejected him. On thinking further, he remembered how she had narrated to him her proposal to be. He had immersed himself in work after that giving her no inkling of what he was planning.
A day before the fashion show, he had approached Garima and asked for Khushi's hand in marriage and she had happily obliged much to Arnav's surprise. She had said, "I knew it even before you realized."
His bridal collection had stolen the show. Arnav was asked to say a few words.
"Khushi... That is the name of my bridal collection. For a bride is the most happiest on her wedding day... there is another reason why I named it thus. It is because of my Khushi. She had been my support and my belief. She had believed in me more than I did. My best friend, Khushi, will do me the honor becoming my better half?" he had gone on one knee with the award in his hand. Khushi been stunned momentarily. When she was given a mike, she replied,
"Better half nahi Arnavji. Your other half."
And thus, Khushi Kumari Gupta had accepted Arnav Singh Raizada's proposal. After a month of dating, they had decided to tie the knot as it was becoming increasingly difficult to stay away from each other. And finally it is their wedding day today.
As the sun started setting and darkness started to settle over, Arnav Singh Raizada tied the mangalsutra and filled Khushi's maang with sindoor. The beautiful Mrs. Khushi Arnav Singh Raizada shined like a moon dispelling the darkness around; her shine coming from the guiding light of her life, her husband's love.
