that "dose of confusion" in their communication, that's what all my mmms are for. and how they followed each other with their eyes. the to and fro, the tied to you sense, lovely.

toward the end you mention something that i felt for the first time while watching 41 and 42. the amount asr will be hurt by shyam's betrayal. the look on his face when he sees shyam. he loves his jeejaji too. after his father broke his trust, he hadn't found an older man to put his faith in. that was his elder sister's loving, simple, straightforward, honest, wise husband. i can't say no to you, jeejaji he says later. this betrayal will be hard on him. was hard on him. and in typical asr style he didn't think of himself, just his di.

the interplay of a million feelings when humans are involved... makes ipk so pink and bold. loved redwa. pinwa super hot.

THANK YOU THANK YOU Madam! thast the beauty of rewatching, def didn't notice all of this before...ofcourse didn't know the future of the show either, but it goes to show that the writers had is all laid out up to a certain point. seriously, his "tum teek ho" to her with his eyes was heart touching and HOT and beautiful!!! this audience always haazir for this powerful acting! you're so right, they follow eathother with their eyes from the second they walk into the mandir, no control just looking for eachother..
Agreed the impact of Shyaam's betrayal to Arnav was perhaps a bit overshadowed by the impact of Khushi's apparent betrayal to him, but these earlier epis show the love and respect for this man in his eyes. You're so right he was the first man after his father he trusted, Mamaji may have been around but seems too busy to play a fatherly role...always wondered why Mamaaji was more of a side they why he was used to shape ASR, guess they had to do that so the ASR characters "did it all on my own" can take shape.

Thankswa for all the redwa and hot pinkwa, ekdam hamri lipashtik ki jaisen!!!😉

"if you're gonna be two-faced at least make one of them pretty."
~~~ marilyn monroe ~~~
filled with love, promises, vows, came episode 42. just as duplicitous as the man it was crafted to introduce; two-faced, like the enemy, shyam manohar jha. named after the sublime lord, there was never a blacker soul. if we'd ever had any doubts as to his nature, thinking maybe he didn't mean to harm anyone, fell in love with the innocent lovely khushi by chance, lost his head, didn't know what to do, etc., etc., all those thoughts were laid to rest here. no need to wonder.
he indeed was pure evil. no compunction, no remorse, not even a shred of guilt. he would take advantage of a handicapped, tender hearted woman to further his own cause and find his way to his current obsession. the girl who'd looked back at him in lucknow that day. perhaps shyam did feel the closest thing to love that someone like him could feel, for khushi. but that didn't make it any better or condonable.
"and thus i clothe my naked villany
with odd old ends stolen out of holy writ;
and seem a saint, when most i play the devil."
~~~ william shakespeare, richard III ~~~

creatives deserve credit for the design of this intense episode, made in the model of shyam, loving and tender on the outside. violent and ruthless underneath. deception in its core. only one crib: too much shyam and too sweet anjali. c'mon, my man out there is a diabetic... hold the sugary.

a beaming anjali is at centre flanked by the two dearest people in her life. they rush to her side as she stumbles. she believes they'll both protect, love, honour her, if necessary with their lives. little does she know. the camera tells us of the men's place in her life. no shot is wasted, each one says something about our characters and their story. i have always enjoyed this aspect of ipk. not that the visual language was always very subtle or unique, but it was dealt with stylishly, lightly, without making a mega issue of things. we were invited to pick cues, not clobbered into doing so.

"and we all know love is a glass which makes even a monster appear fascinating."
~~~ alberto moravia, the woman of rome ~~~
the other thing was music. i know i digress, but i wanted to say this here, as today's episode was loaded with connotation and allusion in music too. can't say i've ever seen a serial with such lovely, stirring, and polished sound track. rabba vey apart, there were all kinds of occasion and moment related back ground scores. many memorable and nice. then there was asr's score. raju singh who had worked long with r d burman brought that svelte, sexiness to his music that his mentor was famous for. that's how it seemed to me. i wasn't too fond of a couple of tracks, but the main ones were beautiful. today's episode had an undertone of war it seemed to me in terms of sound. pace, drums, chanting, conch shell blowing, a sense of preparation for something momentous. and of course, shyam's slimy signature.
everyone is beaming at the return of damadji, even asr looks relaxed, emotional (unbelievable). when he sees the man who makes his sister happy, he almost has a sense of gratitude. he would do anything for her, we know. and the boy who's never had an elder male to trust ever since his father broke it, has possibly come to trust this man, his jeejaji. strange how in three years, shatir asr has never sensed the lie in shyam, how we lose our instinct where those we love are concerned sometimes.
anjali has never smiled more, and shyam is all supportive and adoring. flowery words flow out of his mouth effortlessly, no one detects their emptiness. it was interesting how ipk revealed its hero and its villain. the former started out looking really mean while the latter was the heroine's saviour in the first scene. yet even when asr snapped her dori we knew there was a decent man in there somewhere. and though shyam was as good as gold it seemed, there was always a sense of dross clinging to him. it was in his music, his sudden appearances where khsuhi was, his shiftiness at buaji's questions and any mention of the raizadas. by the time he hobbled into the temple, 99 percent of the global population knew who would be revealed as anjali's husband. and the story had been told in a way that made us feel sorry for anjali already, and angry with shyam for his transgressions with khushi. but not just the two girls were his victims. the entire family was. as was asr. great woe, that's what he brought in his wake.
off the devoted couple go to practice a ritual, one most wonderful, according to mamaji. and what is it? the renewal of vows, anjali and shyam's private ceremony before fire and god, practically a wedding. as the words are spoken and the two look meltingly into each others eyes, a chill enters. even the fire can't drive it away.
she:
iss pyaar ko... humare vishwas ko hum kabhi tootne nahin denge.. bhale hi hum dono kitne bhi door ho... phir bhi hum vishwas ke iss pavan dor ko hamesha bandhe rakhenge.
this love of ours, this trust, i'll never let it break, even if we're apart, i'll always keep this sacred thread of trust tied.
yes, she will, and that will be more the pity, cause of tragedy. had we not known it then too, we'd have sensed her trust will be sorely tried.
he:
iss parivar ke prati hamari jo bhi zimedariyan hain hum unhe nibhane se kabhi peechhe nahin hatenge.
i will do the right thing by each member of this family, never shall i back away from my responsibilities to them.
oh well.
she:
hum har kadam par, sukh mein, dukh mein, acchhe samay mein, bure samay mein... aapka saath denge. aapki dhaal banke rahenge... aap ki anjali banke rahenge.
at every step, in happiness or sadness, in good times and bad, i will stay with you. i will be your shield, i will be your anjali.
poor poor girl.
he:
hum apne aane waali peedi ki mangal kamna karte hain... bilkul aapki chhaaya ho hamare santaan... kyonki keval aap hi humaare jeevan ki neev hain... keval aap hi hain hamare jeevan ki muskan...
i pray for the well being of our coming generation, may they be your reflection, because only you are the foundation of my life, only you are the smile in my life.
liar liar pants on fire. oh the horror of his treatment of his coming generation.
she:
hum prarthna karte hain... ki humaari vajah se kabhi bhi aapko dukh na pahunche... hum kabhi bhi aapke khushi ke raaste na aaye...
i pray that because of me may you never receive any sadness... may i never come in the way of your happiness (khushi).
how the man changes at these words. in a second his mind flies to his dark place, where he's trapped the picture of a girl in his prison. she's peering from behind her mother's shoulder, scared, feeling embarrassed without her dupatta... she's turning back to look at him... the utter duplicity of this cretin.
he:
iss shaadi ke rishte ko jo aapne darja diya hai hum uska samman karte hain... humaari zindagi mein aapki jagah aur koi nahin le sakta... hum se pahle aap hain... yeh humaara vachan hai.
the place you've given our relationship of marriage, i respect that... no one can take your place in my life... you are before me, i promise that.
she:
humaara diya hua har vachan pavitra man se diya hua vachan hai... hum vachan dete hain humaare shaadi ke pavitra bandhan mein hum kabhi bhi jhoot ya dhoke ka kaala saya nahin padne denge... bhagwan na kare agar aap pe kabhi sankat aaye, toh woh bhagwan hume dein...
every promise of mine comes from a pure mind, i promise i will never let the black shadow of deceit or cheating fall on our relationship... god forbid, should some danger come your way, may god give it to me inst...
he rushes to cover her mouth with is hand, and avers:
hum aap par kabhi koi sankat, koi bhi dukh, jhoot ya dhoke ki parchhai nahin padne denge... itna pyaar jo karte hain hum aapko... raani sahiba.
i will never let any danger, any sadness, deceit or cheating come your way... i love you that much... raani sahiba.
and so the web of lies gets spun with saat vachan, seven promises, words of sacred love ears do yearn to hear; and believe, no matter what. yet one day, she would crack the web and sit before a fire again.
the gifts come out, and all are impressed by shyam's thoughtfulness. he has these blokes eating out of his hand. et tu, asr? how confidently he persuades saale sahib to wear di's raksha dhaga, think of it as a wrist band. wow, what's this man, a kid you're handling? but alas, at this point, asr is indeed as trusting and pliant as a chiild before him, aapko to mana nahin kar sakta... can't refuse you, jeejaji.
and so it goes on. till that little trick with the sari. but then the phone rings, and he sees khushi's name. he can't help but show his true face.
as the episode went by and i got restless for my favourite couple, the unsweet one, buaji came to the rescue. intent on selling shyam bitwa to khoosi bitiya, she went on and on. but nothing could divert madam from the serious business of eating. certainly not stories of shyamji. well perhaps, not such a bad chaat maker... but gotta eat.
and then suddenly buaji asked, hope you did the fast the right way, didn't eat anything before time or whatever.
halfway to the mouth, the hand with the morsel of delicious poori stopped. the laughter disappeared from the face, a quiet fell. memories and a yearning. so much longing.
imagine she actually stopped eating for a while. that if not anything else should have told titaliya, this is love. but sanka devi was not listening. not yet.
one for the road
EPISODE 42, YO!!!
The episode starts off with khushi entering the mandir and almost bumping into Akash...that is why she made that shocked expression (silly me for thinking she saw shyam...everyone knows that the truth is not revealed to the lead until much much later) Akash said he has her thaali and he returned it... as khushi got into the ricksaw, akash watched to leave to make sure she got in safely (just assuming), but i think he wanted one last glimpse of payal.
The Raizadas are one happy bunch of people since their ladla son in law came to break their ladli dhikri's vrat. As they were leaving the mandir, Anajali tripped, and she was saved by both Shyam and Arnav. She turned to shyam first and smiled and then turned to Arnav and smiled as well. She seemed happy the two most important people in her life will always be there for her. She turned to shyam first and silently thanked him, this shows that she will always put shyam before her brother. I noticed that once shyam showed up, the family is a lot happier. It seems when anjali is happy the whole family is happy, their world revolves around Anjali's happiness, it could be because of her disability or her past experiences in life...or both could the the factor.
Shyam and Anjali go to the Mandir in their house and redo their vows in front of Devi Maiya...Shyam vows were all hypocritical saying he will always be there for her...i have no clue how he has the guts to lie in front of DM. One vow that stood out to me was that Anjali said that she will never block he road to his happiness (Khushi), shyam made a face like wow she is awesome and starts thinking of khushi, he is thinking that nothing will stop him in achieving his khushi. Shyam then said that before him, he will always put anjali first. this makes anjali happy...they finish their pooja and through out shyam is thinking of khushi. The pooja is over and the whole family is watching and admiring their love (i personally find their love diabetically sweet). Anjali want to tie rahksha daagas on her brothers and shows that arnav is in the background watching (arnav being in the background shows that he will always watch over his sister, and he also does not believe in this type of stuff). Akash steps up and allows anjali to tie the daaga, and arnav refuses. Shyam goes to arnav and tells him that he should put it on (this part the hindi was kind of hard to understand but i assume he said i know you don't believe in this but think of it as a bracelet??? if you know what he said please tell me) pretty much shyam said do it for your sister. Arnav said i cannot ever say no to you, and lets him tie the daagas. Anjali is watching from the background happy, she is happy because her lifelines are happy and will do anything for her...Shyam brings gifts for everyone and said he forgot anjali's teej sari, and she becomes sad but does not show it.
The Gupta sisters enter the house, and bua ji asked if their vrat when okay, payal said yes but khushi thought about that incident she had with arnav and walked off. Khushi went off to set the table and asked if she should set shyam's plate, bua ji said no he will be late and khushi said she will save his food. This makes bua ji very happy and she thinks the vrat went well. While they were eating khushi was eating like a maniac and buaji said save some for shyam...khushi just keeps eating, bua ji keeps saying how shyam is part of the family after a being with them for a short amount of time, and kept asking khushi is she agreed and khushi said yes not even listening to what she said. Khushi said she remembering shukla's chaat, and bua ji was like i am talking about shyam and khushi immediately said i am thinking of him too but not as much as the chaat. THis make bua ji very happy and she is planning shyam and khushi's rishta in her head and NK is by her side.
In Anjali and shyam's room (i feel like giving them a nickname...their names are too much work to type together...i will call them Anjam)...So in anjam's room, they were sitting on the bed...anjali was saying even though you were late the pooja was completed...and shyam said are you still mad that i forgot your sari (i think she should be happy her hubby came after a long time and stop fretting over a sari...but hey all girls want a gift from their hubby no matter what) and shyam was like what should i do with this sari now, hearing this she got up and immediately saw the sari and is happy...She hugs him and at that time khushi is calling shyam. The episode ends with Anjam hugging and shyam is staring at the phone
Will shyam pick up the phone and lie in front of anjali, or make and excuse to pick of the phone and leave early...Or will he not pick up the phone????
😆 anita, on the diabetically sweet point, same pinch.
highlights in red. nice take, who can blame you for thinking she saw shyam, if khushi had, asr could have clobbered shyam then and there, yes yes yes.
anjam? nice.
shyam said to asr, something like: this string is a sign of your sister's love and devotion, wear it for her, and think of it as a wristband instead of a raksha dhaga. ver big bro tone. irrritating.
Episode 42
Lies, Lies and More Lies
Kushi runs up the stairs of the Mandir to the beat of the drums, the music tempo one of suspense, our hearts racing, her eyes go wide, shocked'..
Akash, sir has met her at the top of the stairs. Shyam's lie is safe.
Akash says to Kushi you forgot your plate. She thanks him; she must go her sister is waiting. He knows that, he just wants another glimpse at Payal, using his little white lie of returning her plate just to get that last gaze.
Shyam and Anjali take blessings and Mami tells her husband she is starving so he should do something so they can go home to eat. He tells everyone that she wants to make spiced nuts because Shyam has returned home after so long. Oops, another little white lie. They all agree to go home and as they are leaving Anjali stumbles. Two strong arms reach out to break her fall, one belonging to her brother the other her husband, their common bond is Anjali. These two men are totally opposite each other, one abrasive and an atheist while the other sweet as pie and faithful. Another lie! Arnav is a much better man than Shyam. We see ASR portrayed negatively at times but his heart is true, faithful and pure. Shyam is portrayed as a dutiful, faithful husband and we have already seen signs of his real deceptive character. Lies, lies and more lies!
GH- Buaji opens the door at the house and Payal and Kushi come in. Buaji hopes their fast went well and soon they will marry good men. The first words out of Kushi's mouth is when do we eat! She runs into the kitchen and Payal offers Buaji the offering. Kushi comes to set the table and asks if Shyam is eating and Buaji is excited because she thinks Kushi wants to eat her first meal after the fast with Shyam. Aye, NandKishore surely knows how to make pairs, Buaji exclaims. Uggghhh!
RM- All walk in and Shyam asks for Nani. Mami says you came late and she is in bed. They talk about Nani being strict and she would scold him. Mami asks Anjali to tell the servant to start the dinner and Shyam says go and eat we will join you in a little while. It seems that Shyam and Anjali have their own ritual during Teej so they go to the home mandir and sit in front of the sacred fire.
Anjali starts, "I will not leave this love or destroy this trust, no matter how far apart we are. We will always trust each other."
But HE will.
Shyam says," I will always be responsible to this family."
LIE.
Anjali says, "I will always be there for you in happiness and sadness, in good times and bad times. I will protect you and always be yours."
Her truth not his.
Shyam returns with, "I will pray for children, just like you, because you are the soul of my life. You are the reason for my smile."
LIE.
Anjali responds, " I pray you never get hurt because of me and nothing interferes with your happiness."
She just gave him permission in his eyes. He pictures Kushi before his eyes.
He says to Anjali he respects the love she has for this marriage and that no one can take her place in his life. He loves her more than himself. This is his oath.
LIE, LIE AND MORE LIES!
Anjali answers that all the promises she has made are from her heart. She promised that no lies or betrayal will enter into their lives. Boy, she didn't see it coming! When she asks that God gives her all his troubles he stops her placing his fingers over her lips'he says that there will never be lies or betrayals in their relationship. LIE, LIE AND MORE LIES! "I love you very much, Rani Sahiba." Lie. They both pray and he is picturing Kushi and when Anjali goes to take his blessings he tells her you stay in my heart and not at my feet.
The family has joined them congratulating them on their remarriage and Di says she has one more thing to do and that is to tie the sacred thread on her brothers. She ties Akash's thread and turns to Arnav who says, "Di, please.." Shyam takes the thread from Anjali and goes to his brother in law, tells him that they feel it's a sacred protective thread but he can call it a bracelet of his sister's love and trust. Arnav answer is that he can't refuse that. That is not a lie! Shyam showers everyone with gifts and while they are all awaiting his gift for his Queen with anticipation, he says he has forgotten. Has he or is he lying again?
GH- Kushi is eating and Buaji sighs as she is missing Shyam. She asks Kushi, "don't you?" Kushi answers she misses his snacks more and Payal scolds her. Buaji agrees she misses his snacks too. Buaji asks if she cheated on her fast and Kushi stops eating and recalls the events of her afternoon. Buaji encourages her to call Shyam.
Shyam and Anjali are in their room and he asks her if she is mad because he was late or because he forgot her gift. He hands her a beautiful red saree. She scolds him and then looks into the shopping bag and finds a Delhi newspaper. She finds it strange that he has a paper from here but he says he got it at the hotel.
LIE!
His phone rings'.Kushi is calling.
What will he say to Anjali? What will he say to Kushi?
LIES, LIES AND MORE LIES
hi cynthia,
super beginning. and why oh why is shyamwa's lie safe.
fantastic lie spotting. and love the one that was not a lie. neat take. the vows section was revolting, wasn't it. liar in his soul our shyam bitwa.
they dropped that newspaper at the end. so there were always telltale signs of his deceit, wonder why? was anjali supposed to piece things together at one point or maybe later after he is caught red handed? would have been interesting to know why these hints were dropped.
reminded me of a game of hide and seek, episode 41. a beautiful game, where two people strangely bound to each other tried to hide their feelings, yet their feelings wanted to seek each other out. and when the playing field is a powerful temple, the richness and significance of it takes on deeper tone. their fingers touched. by chance? by design? no matter, it was the signal it seemed, and the eyes took over there on.
she looked at him aghast, he carefully hid his feelings behind a mask of nonchalance, and proceeded to complete the task of doing arati in mechanical vein. all went about their duties and rituals around the deity. yet for no apparent reason, she couldn't stop chasing him with her glances from behind lowered lids. nor could he take his searching, seeking chocolate brown eyes off her.
what was this happening to them? didn't look like either was thinking. just doing what their instinct compelled them to. she believed he was rakhas, yet her eyes had to see. he on the other hand had already started noting his reactions to this chit of a girl. his most unusual reactions. if she shouted at him, he just stared without a word. if she was rude to him he still couldn't stop thinking of her. if she said not a word to him, it bothered him. what was happening to him? it felt as though a pall stood between him and his feelings, hiding the truth. and perhaps it did.
though other than that first touch, they remained apart, but somehow in constant touch. and when lavanya forced asr to feed her a sweet and open her fast, khushi's eyes held sudden pain and consternation, her fingers struck a matchstick again and again against the matchbox; the sound of it, repetitive, full of friction, irritating told a tale of its own. something had struck deep. he looked at her, and there was a tonne of emotion in his gaze. looked like la had caught the thief with just that one act of pulling his hand and making him give her that sweet.
la. somehow always instrumental in that love of khushi and asr. it was she who employed khushi that day on a whim, she because of whom asr completely lost it with khushi and banished her to the guest house. her snide remarks and laughter that made him roar, "usska ek naam hai," and now her gesture that sparked a sudden burning heat in khushi and a smoulder in his gaze. it will be for her that khushi will be brought back to rm. and it will be her too that will be responsible for the two going off by themselves to nainital. watching asr hug ging la, khushi will feel a tear roll down her cheeks without knowing why. and of course, most memorably, it will be la who will understand what asr's slip of tongue really means.
ipk is perhaps the only show i've seen that created a character like la. you had to hate her, get irritated with her, want to slap her, but in the end love and respect that's what she took when she left. practically dragging your heart to give her that.
when she asked him, if he'd enjoyed her keeping that fast for him, his answer was predictably, you know i don't believe in such things. he really doesn't, and it's a pity no one understood how much religion and the thing of the spirit is there in this man. without rituals, without dogma, without mantra and puja. maybe someday khushi would have discovered it, and been entranced. but for that the writing would have had to be still in the game.
as khushi left with payal, a little exchange of looks between akash and payal. how prettily love was seeking each player out. or whackily: mamaji revealed himself to be quite a lover boy too, the game of here's a sweet for you oops i ate it, hmmm. lot of chemistry between mano darling and her patidev, what. only expressed in the way of older people, behind closed doors, delightful little glimpses slipping out once in a way. not a very strong man, mamji, perhaps a little cowed down before the powerful personality of his mother, but his own sense of humour and an indulgent air toward his always in a rumble patni. akash seemed to have inherited his gentle ways from his dad. the contrasts in attraction and its expression between different people was lovely through out.
parvati and shiv must be thinking, er when are we going to get some attention.
when khsuhi walked out, there was evidence the hide and seek hadn't ended. humari baat abhi khatam nahin hui.
while all were engaged, anjali waited, for her yeh to come. determined not to eat or drink a thing till he came, kept his promise. this had never happened before. she was distraught. days of not seeing him had worn her down. she depended on him for her sustenance. her brother and her husband, the two pillars of her life. one was by her side, here at the temple only because he always did as she asked him to.
where was he? asr urged her to eat something, but no. as stubborn as nani and her bro (i think someone else mentioned this too), anjali refused. she would pray and not touch food or water till he came.
and then he did come.
the devil hath power
to assume a pleasing shape.
~~~ william shakespeare ~~

again a breeze rose in the night. i listened carefully. was it like the one that wrapped khushi and the asr and the universe at the start of 40, the beginning of the day? no, here i heard a hidden hurricane, something sinister, a touch of destruction within. directors and sound editors used their keenest sensibilities to give us a glimpse of the future in short hand. (the hawaa really did baatein in ipk. no wonder khushi spoke to the winds about her love.)

suddenly, no more hide and seek. all feelings were out. everyone loved this yeh of anjali's. broke my heart to see the trust in her eyes, and the complete surrender in asr's. he believed this man to be good, not only for his sister, but really a good man.

after his father, he'd found no other man that he respected. till this one. i dont even wish to think what awaited this trust of his. some things are best hidden from. look at anjali, how she closes her eyes.

endnote
wanted to leave you with two caps that said things.

a delightful communication from the makers, this shot, from the first moment on, we are being made aware of anjali's two mainstays, and how they are arrayed. she is always in the centre. on either side of her, her two supports. or are they her devil and her angel?

my favourite shot today was this.

something in khushi is breaking out, can't take it. she doesn't know what it is, but this significant act by asr for la, one that husbands do for wives, is just getting to her. strike... strike... strike...

Strike...strike...strike! its on fire, ur whoe take!
Indi, well worth the wait!! the whole thing was well thought out like always but this game of hide and seek..❤️ me "laus" it! brillint blue and i agree with, brilliant purple EXTRA LOVE, just absolutely amazing insight, two parts made me wish i wasn't at work so i could jump/clap and whistle, all you said about la as fate's instrument in bringing the two together👏 so true, somewhere we all felt it but to have it written in words, makes you realize just how much AND this line

when khsuhi walked out, there was evidence the hide and seek hadn't ended. humari baat abhi khatam nahin hui.

❤️ ofcourse mind went straight to a certain future scene where "aisa laga jaise hamaari saanse ruk gayee"
