Yep, IPK was totally different for me, the only indian serial where i watched one episode and actually wanted to watch the next one. And was in love by the episode after that! I think certain parts of the story probably weren't that original but on the whole the characterisations, certain scenarios, interactions, behaviour, dialogues etc were different, they felt fresh. I loved all the ASR-isms and the Khushi-isms ('haw' 'what the' :) and a lot of times the unexpected happened, and if they surprised us it means it was different to the norm.
ASR the anti-hero - arrogant, overbearing, aggressive, borderline abusive but also sensitive - i see there are a few on tv now but to me he felt new, original and very different. Khushi i loved first time i saw her - funny, loud, annoying, crazy, spunky - she seemed real with so many shades to her, very different from other heroines on tv. In fact most of the characters were almost normal, which i loved, very different from the ott dramatic people u get usually on tv. Even Shyam was quite subtle in the beginning.
The thing that makes IPK the most different is Barun and Sanaya. Not just their acting but also their dialogue delivery, body language, way they react to each other, expressiveness of their eyes, believability as two people in love but not understanding it yet. I started watching from the post-cocktail party fight and couldn't believe i was watching a tv serial - they were sublime in that scene, the boy mean and hurtful but hiding something deep, the girl hurt but strong, standing up for herself with dignity - it felt so real. I felt compelled to go online and catch up but i was half expecting it to not be as good as it seemed ... and of course it was even better :)
I have watched a LOT of tv and the combination of Barun and Sanaya is definitely what made this show the most different. The show gave them a great platform but they took it to a whole new level of brilliance. Coz yeah now other shows with similar love/hate concepts r around and they're ok but NONE have IPK's magic - they dont make me believe in them, they dont seem real. In fact some have stronger storylines, a clearer narrative, better continuity, less loopholes, better styling, but i would STILL rather watch an old episode of IPK then them! Even IPK on a bad day is a million times more watchable than anything else out there - says it all really doesn't it :)
