Shyam was a opportunist in the beginning by marrying into the rich family, not out of love but out of desire for status. I agree that he wasn't terrible in the very first scene, but when he saw Khushi, a obsession bordering on insanity overcame his brain. For the first time, I think, he desired a woman. And so, slowly he went into his Daiya Ho stage, by fooling everyone quite well.

When Arnav married Khushi, his plans were still being formed. He wanted to kill ASR and Anjali, take the Raizada wealth and marry Khushi. But when he realized that Khushi fell in love with ASR and vice versa, I think he truly went mad because he realized his obsession for Khushi was so great that if he couldn't have her, no one could. And thus, he decided he would rather see Khushi die than be with Arnav, resulting in him leaving her in the middle of the road.

When Arnav saves Khushi and returns to the house, Shyam is back to scheming for Khushi and I think he truly becomes despicable when he kills his own child. The lack of empathy for a child made him disgusting and unforgivable in many eyes.

I think the true purpose of SMJ is to show that love can drive people insane and make them indeed evil and demonish.

Something I wud have loved to have happened wud have been a head to head with ASR and wud have liked to have seen more deviousness of Shayam and an intelligent, clever ASR thwarting his notes and frustrating him further, pitting them against each other and then as you have said about more fitting exist for him both times. They could have done so much more with the complex character they had created.

This was one of our adhura supne which was not fulfilled in the show, just like his past history.
