Here goes...

Dadi; how long has it been since she graced us with her auspicious presence? A couple of weeks, at the most? But then again, she's made a year's worth of impact on us, so much so that She now holds the key, or rather her seeking for the key event, is keeping us on our toes.

Kis mitti se bani hai ye? Wasn't this the question that rose in our minds, the first two or three episodes when we saw her high handed and quite rude actions? We had quite a few speculations, quite a few frustrations and a whole lot of doubts as to what her purpose is. Was she sent by Shyam? Was she called in by Anjali? Or did she get a sudden idea that her family needed her guidance? Did she wake up from prolonged amnesia (wild guess, I know)?

And then her sudden love for Khushi's Mom confused us further. What is it that she believes makes it essential for her to meet Garima? Does she have something to say? Something to ask? Will the much awaited meeting bring about an apocalypse?

So many questions and yet, so little has been revealed about the woman for us to understand her stand. Its not at all difficult to classify her a vamp; a word that describes a negative character; the antagonist. But is she really? To know, let's go back; back to the past where, Subhadra Singh Malik, was indeed, the Malkin of her domain, her kingdom; Sheesh Mahal.

A magnificent palatial house with its sprawling gardens, elegant pillars bespeaking the luxury and wealth of those that resided within; antiques adorning every nook of the house, making even the darkest corner look bright as on a festive day, each speck of the building a symbol of wealth, of money, of power and of dominance; and Subhadra Malik at the middle of it all, the Sutradhari.

The one people bow down to without qualms, the one people obey without questions; not even her two sons, the heirs. How powerful would she have felt, sitting in her throne amidst her subjects, making them bend to her wishes, watching them look up to her, respect her, revere her; hang on to her every word with utmost obedience. Wouldn't she have considered herself all powerful? All knowing? A heady feeling; knowledge, power, control; isn't it?

Even her friendship is testament to that; even in a simple game of hide and seek, her friend's the one who looks for her at the wrong place. She's right and what she does will be accepted by all.

There she resides in all her glory, and along comes the wedding of her first son; the heir apparent. Amicably settled for all she knows or cares; the daughter of her childhood friend, from a respectable family, of a good character though a little easily dominated which serves her purposes well. What does she feel about her son's wishes? Its his duty to marry a suitable woman, someone she finds and approves of. Matters of his wishes are minor and do not factor in the bigger picture.

And so it goes; the family grows to include her grandchildren, a pretty dainty girl and a headstrong akdoo boy and she is satisfied. The girl to be sheltered, protected and boy shows promise of becoming like her; a worthy successor.

So what prompted her, a woman in power, to give up on all this and leave for an Ashram? What induced her to take up Sanyas, if a brief one? Why did she want out of her life; why did she want to be away from the very people she had thus far lorded over?

A Disillusionment; A Betrayal; A Dethroning; in that order.

All was well with her world one day and the next; all hell broke loose. Subhadra Malik, in all her glory, would never have fathomed that her son, the one who had meekly abided her wishes so far, would go behind her back; do something that would make not just him, but even her lower her head in front of people she had so far risen above; her Samdhis. Her illusion of the perfectly in control world begins to crack and she takes a measure, puts forth an iron hand to regain control over her son's actions. A measure that, unknowingly, earns her more devastation than restoration.

There is nothing so harmful on earth as a woman scorned, as justice denied; she denied justice to an innocent that day, didn't the same reflect on her own lineage? On her own grand daughter? Isn't she now stranded in her life? Unable to forget the past and hence incapable of moving towards the future? Karma has come back to taunt Subhadra Malik, indeed. She earned a bitter enemy that day in the person she'd thought was easily disposed; a middle class chit of a girl who could easily be dispensed off with. And peace was reinvited to her kingdom; if only for a little while; until...

Another day of celebration; a day of pride and utmost honor for the Maliks, the day they give away their daughter with grandeur. Sunhadra Malik walks about the palace, head held high, her shoulders stiff as stone as she supervises the arrangements, sending the servants running about carrying her orders to be immediately taken care of.

Then, comes the gun shot out of nowhere; shattering not just the gaiety atmosphere, but also the walls of conceit and arrogance she had built around herself. A death by will; not one but two. She rushes to the place, trying to take control, trying to assess the situation and plan damage control but the damage is already done, and is irreparable.

Her son and daughter-in-law are gone, leaving behind their two children in her responsibility; the marriage is stopped, another black feather in the Malik's crown. Skeleton that she had firmly hid inside the closet for ages come tumbling out for all to whisper about, for normal people, people she hadn't spared a second glance, to gossip about; all is not well within the Malik household.

She still holds strong; she has her roots still intact, afterall. She has a place to call a home, she still has her family left and though wounded, her pride and honor is still intact, if a little tainted.

Away comes the betrayal she hadn't foreseen at all; that of her other son, the one she had put her hopes on. He will not offer a place for her grandchildren in her house. Her house; the very place that she had ruled over, is out of her control; she has no more decision making power within those walls, her words hold no weight there anymore.

But still; she holds on, her sons maybe gone but she still has hope, faith; on her grandson. He, atleast, would pay heed to her authority. He will get the Maliks back to their former glory and she'll have her place back at the top of the social hierarchy. She hopes; until'

He rebels; the boy of thirteen decides to set things right, the way they were before; in his own way. He will not follow her ideals, he will not believe in the justifications she showers on her son's actions; in short, he will not be submissive to her control.

From being the Queen to being ignored even by the youngest of her kin; Subhadra Malik's stature tumbles within a day.

Does she falter? A bit, yes

Is she shocked? Yes

Have her nightmares come true? Yes

Are her situations dire? Yes

So does she fight back? Does she decide, come what may I'll stand by my family and be their backbone? Do her actions then show her strength of character?

A big fat No is the answer; she opts to retreat from life; to hide out in a remote corner, away from her own blood, unable to face the humiliation, unable to live without the power and dominance that she had so far wielded. Subhadra Malik chose to run away when the going got tough for her family and this, and this alone, bespeaks her nature.

Arnav, to this day, respects her; the Raizadas, to this day, pay attention to her words; Mami fears her so much its not even funny. Even Anjali admits to missing her presence. But what are Dadi's reactions? Does she miss her family? Did she come back for them? Because she loved them?

Subhadra Malik never knew love; neither did she feel any herself, nor could she impart any such feeling to her family such that they would love her back. People stay a few feet away from her(not that she allows many people close enough), treat her like one would treat a ticking time bomb because if not dealt right, she could cause destruction again.

The years have done nothing; the time in the Ashram has been of no effect in mellowing her down. She is as she was 14 years back; convoluted and power hungry, steeped in her own greatness as she sees it. Looking down on people is second nature to her and sharp words are the only ones in her vocabulary. Not even her closest family are lucky enough to get kind words from her; the most she can offer them is her blessing, which she thinks is so precious that she rarely offers any.

She offers no explanation because she isn't answerable to anyone; not even the head of the house, Arnav Singh Raizada. She's come back to take her 'rightful' place at the head of the family. Only later does she realize that this, is not a task that is as easy as she thought. Things aren't as she had left them 14 years back and her throne is not lying in waiting for her to re-adorn it.

Coming to the question of the hour; why did she hate Khushi on sight? Even after knowing she was Arnav's wife, her resentment seemed to increase rather than subside or change over. Why?

Keeping aside the past that could be between Khushi/Garima and Dadi/The Maliks, lets connect her character thus far and the situation at the house as she saw it.

Being under someone's control, someone younger to her too, is out of the question. But as soon as she entered Shantivan, what does she see? An almost empty house with Khushi walking about with a pail of water in hand, at ease and totally at home while Mami and the others are having their own conversation.

She waits for them to take notice of her presence, come running to her and greet her, fuss over her, respect her, take her blessings. What does she get? She gets drenched in dirty water, and that too by the person she assumes to be the Naukar not that anyone bothers to correct her assumption.

Does she get the attention atleast then? Oh no, why Khushi spilt the water and the case of the Chipkali seems to be more in everyone's mind rather than she, the matron of the family, returning after 14 years. She develops an instant dislike to the woman who is hogging the limelight away from her.

She strives to set her place in the house, treating people like unworthy beings just to make her feel better about herself; to reassure herself that her position is still safe. Then she meets with Anjali; who is, for all appearances, condemned to her room and is separated from her husband, a person nobody seems keen on talking about. She can't bear to see her grand-daughter slighted and ignored this way and decides to get her justice.

Enters her friend and grandson who, though treat her with high respect, do not forget to question her of her actions or point out her faulty actions of the past. She realizes, belatedly, that her place in the power play is lost; and she has lost it to none other than the now most important person in her grandson's life, Khushi.

She confronts him repeatedly, asking questions, dragging out the past baggages she still has in her mind but no; her problems are not his top most concerns any longer. Arnav Singh Raizada will not succumb to her authority, to her dictations; not then, not now. But she also sees that he pays heed, listens and almost obeys whatever his dear wife says or even thinks.

Thus lands the low blow to her dreams of reacquisition; and in her mind, she accuses, declares guilty and decides on the punishment to be inflicted on the one she considers responsible for this all; Khushi. She decides to get rid of her once and for all; by hook or crook.

And so begins her game of deception; the rituals of marriage, the need to meet Garima all being mere excuses to achieve her one goal'
