Hello fellow Arshi fans:
What an episode? A new wonder for us, the viewers as well as members of the Gupta and Raizada families, who were present at the temple! What wonderful acting by all the cast and crew. We also had them resolve the mysteries of Anjali talking to air and so forth as well, did the creatives not? We are getting some great episodes that one would like to see over and over again, just like the ones that we got before Payal and Aakash got married. Yet we feel the tension mounting higher and higher, and we know that we are going to have an explosion like the last time as well. We will have a brief analysis of this episode; however first, there was one other thing we wanted to mention here as well. A lot of people are wondering as to the necessity of this wedding:
Here is our take on Arnav and Khushi's Marriage:
Wedded or Not:
A number of you mention that they are already married and as such do not need this wedding again right now. Well we are going to look at all the different ways that a couple can get married in Hinduism, as layed out in the Mausmriti or Manava Dharma Shasra. There are eight types of marriage described in the ancient Hindu text of Manusmriti (Laws of Manu) or "Manava Dharma Shastra":
Rite of Brahmana (Brahma) - where the father of the bride invites a man learned in the Vedas and a good conduct, and gives his daughter in marriage to him after decking her with jewels and costly garments.
Well Arnav and Khushi were not married in this way, as Shashiji never invited Arnav, never gave his daughter in marriage to him after decking her with jewels and costly garments, and neither is Arnav learned in the Vedas and a good conduct.
Rite of the Gods (Daiva) - where the daughter is groomed with ornaments and given to a priest who duly officiates at a sacrifice during the course of its performance of this rite.
Arnav and Khushi certainly never got married in this manner either.
Rite of the Rishis (Arsha) - when the father gives away his daughter after receiving a cow and a bull from the bridegroom.
Shashiji did not give away Khushi and neither did he receive a cow and a bull from Arnav.
Rite of the Prajapati - (Prajapatya) where the father gives away his daughter after blessing the couple with the
text "May both of you perform together your duties".
Now this one was certainly not fulfilled, as Shashiji would have to be involved and bless them, which since he cannot speak is out of the question.
Rite of the Asuras (Demons) - when the bridegroom receives a maiden after bestowing wealth to the kinsmen and to the bride according to his own will.
Arnav did not bestow any wealth to the Gupta Parivar, and certainly not to Khushi according to his own will, so this one was not the way Arnav and Khushi are married either.
Rite of the Gandharva - the voluntary union of a maiden and her lover, which arises from desire and sexual intercourse for its purpose.
Of course then we have the one way that some viewers are thinking was the way they got married. According to this, the union has to be voluntary, which here it was not, not from Khushi's side, as she was blackmailed into this, and the second requirement was not then nor even now has been fulfilled, so they are not married in the Rite of the Gandharva.
Rite of the Rakshasa - forcible abduction of a maiden from her home after her kinsmen have been slain or wounded and their houses broken open.
We know that Arnav did not kidnap Khushi from her home, and her family has not been slain or wounded and the Gupta house has not been broken open by Arnav.
Rite of the Pisaka - when a man by stealth seduces a girl who is sleeping or intoxicated or is mentally imbalanced or handicapped.
Arnav and Khushi certainly are not married in this manner as Khushi was not seduced stealthily or otherwise, let alone the fact that she was not sleeping, intoxicated, mentally imbalanced or handicapped.
There is one other rite ofmarriage in Hinduism, which is outlined as follows:
Groom kidnapping, colloquially known as Pakaruah shaadi or Jabaria shaadi, is a phenomenon common in the western parts of Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh states in India, wherein eligible bachelors are abducted by the bride's family and later forcefully married, to avoid heavy dowry costs. Considering the traditional regard for the marriage sacrament, most such marriages are not annulled. Additionally, the groom may suffer criminal charges under Indian dowry law, and end up fighting lengthy legal battles.
This Rite was also not performed as Arnav was kidnapped, however not so that he can marry Khushi, but so that he can be killed, and if we go back to their original wedding day, then it would seem that it was more like Khushi was almost kidnapped and forced to marry, not Arnav.
The above are the alternatives to the traditional Indian Wedding ceremony with all that entails, including the saat (seven) pheras. Now we know that the traditional wedding also requires a priest chanting Mantras as well, as the sindoor (vermillion) in the maang (middle parting on forehead) as well as the Mangalsutra. Please note that in certain emergency situations, just the application of the sindoor in the maang has been construed as a wedding, however, that is on a temporary emergency basis only, and once the emergency is over, the full wedding rituals and ceremonies are followed and the couple does complete all the required necessities.
Arnav and Khushi never completed the all the necessities of the traditional wedding ceremony, as they did not have the pheras, nor did they have the Pandit or Priest chant the mantras. However, neither did they comply with the requirements of any of the other 8 alternative ways of marriage in Hinduism, let alone the fact that a lot of the alternatives are not even accepted by society. As such, Arnav and Khushi are not married and only lived together for the past six months.
Another interesting point we would also like to make here is that just for the sake of argument, even if we do say that they were married in one way or another, and please note that we are not saying that then the fact of the matter is also that the marriage has not been consumated; which also would have validated the marriage, however that has not occurred either and might have counted as a Gandharva Rite of Marriage; which almost happened.
Guys, the point here is that in each of these options, consent of both parties is required. And in that original ceremony, Arnav's blackmailing of Khushi does not count as her consent. She had originally refused him, and only later gave in because of the blackmail. And before you say that this is consent, let us say that if a woman does not consent to sex, however she is blackmailed, and so she forcibly agrees, would anyone say that she consented so it is not rape?
Arnav right now is not being forced to go through with this. He is the one who brought it up, he is the one who is willingly doing this to make Khushi happy, a vast difference from "marry me right now or I will break your sister's wedding." Please note we are not saying that a grand wedding was required, but they are having a grand wedding because of Anjali here. What we are saying is that a wedding was required.
We agree that the other pre-wedding rituals were not required, as they did complete them however Arnav is going along with those, so that he can show Khushi and remind her that they did complete them. Just like he reminded Khushi of their previous ring on finger ceremony outside the temple that day, he will do so with each rasam that they go through from here on out.
Now onto the episode analysis:
Garima Escapes Again!
We hear the conch shell blowing and Daadi standing behind Garima; she tries to sneak a peek but is not successful. As Garima stands there she feels uneasy and looks back to see Daadi. Could this be seen as divine intervention for her to run, or is it an indication to her that she cannot keep running? She has to face the past and tell Khushi everything before the trumpet is blown by someone else creating a bigger problem than was expected. Khushi turns to see Daadi and also has the opportunity to hear her very insistent moaning of having missed Garima. When Buaji says that where does Garima disappear to at the right moment this confirms to Daadi that something is wrong, and that this is the woman that she is eager to see. Daadi also pushes home the fact that it was because of Khushi that Arnav had followed her here, that Khushi had set all this up and that she was not new to this stuff.
We do wonder how long Garima can keep this pretense up, and both Khushi and Buaji are getting suspicious. They will now begin to raise questions, or one hopes they would. The precap itself should be a concerning matter and one to be questioned by Khushi and Buaji, now whether they get the right answers or not will be something interesting to watch out for in the next episode.
Arshi Ka Prem (Arshi's Love):
Arnav phones Khushi to ask if her veneration has been completed and she tells him that Khushi is being accused of calling him to her, and he says "so what" and that he does not care what Daadi thinks. Khushi realizes he will work himself into a fit so changes the topic, and she tells him she is getting permission for her wedding from DM which stuns Arnav, until she says it is a ritual, which is like the siren for the battle. He now is alert, and if it is a ritual then he has to complete it no matter what; no way is he letting this one go. Next they might have to go through the entire marriage again simply for the blessings of DM! To the shock of everyone they see Arnav walking up the stairs, this is the same guy that has not stepped into the mandir for years. Everyone looks at him astounded, but the answer for him is simple, "it's a ritual right? So let's complete it", a poor Khushi, eyes gaping and inviting the mosquitoes into her mouth finally recovers and she corrects the name of the ritual he trying to say. He states "we need her permission so that's why I am here." Buaji says Khushi has managed to do the impossible.
We then see the two of them getting the DM's blessing, he looks at her to get an idea of what to do, and closing his eyes he prays, he then sneaks a look at Khushi who is smiling because of what he has done for her, and he knows what makes her happy. For him it is as simple as this, she is happy by a simple thing he has given her and for him that is enough. When she looks at him she sees him smiling, Khushi turns to her DM and tells her that Arnav being in Mandir has come true and then teases her that he is only doing this for Khushi at the same time asks her to keep her blessings on him at all times.
Arnav says "seeing as we have got the blessing you must be happy now." Khushi smiles and Naani remarks that Anjali would have been over the moon to see Arnav at the Mandir. Payal says to Khushi separately that Arnav is doing this for her. On realizing that Arnav has done all of this for her, Khushi decides that she also needs to reciprocate. She talks to him and tells him that she knew he would come to the mandir one day for her, and when he asks her how, she reminds him of how he helped a little girl fly the doves by paying for them; he is surprised and realizes she was there that day.
Two interesting points to consider:
1. Arnav has stepped into the protecting arms of DM, he is now in a way accepted, whether he actually bothers to turn up to the mandir or to do any of the rituals after marriage, he is still protected whereas Anjali has walked away from the DM. She is no longer in the arms of the DM; she is no longer safe and has moved away from DM in the hope of regaining her husband. (Thanks raani for bringing this to our attention). Also we have seen Khushi ask to have Arnav blessed at all times, and join this with Buaji's raksha dhaagaa it seems he will be protected from future harm (or one can hope).
2. The fact that Khushi is going to do something to make Arnav happy, well here is a thought, what if she buys him a load of plants once again? This will mean a lot to him and will also close the loop where she bought the plants to patch up things between him and Lavanya by selling her mum's bangle.
Anjali:
Anjali sends HP away from home, despite HP saying "in your condition I should not leave you." She gives Shyam tea and asks him to talk with her. He smiles at her and continued to stare at her, feeling satisfied that things are going as he wants them to go.
He tells her she looks beautiful and when she is tense, he then says "you took care of matters, and you made sure HP disappeared so why are you so worried?" She asks him why he wanted to meet her at the RM. He replies that "is it a crime to meet your wife at home?"
She tells him that she waits to meet him more than anything. He then says "I have never been away from you" and in flashbacks we see all the times they met and nearly got caught as well. She says she does not want to talk of the past, and she is sure that it was a misunderstanding. He then says "I also do not want to talk about the past." (double connotations here? The past which exposed and the past we know nothing of?). He then asks her how she is and how her day was and that is why he stays close by. She tells him not to worry for her. She then says she wishes everything would be ok like before and we see Shyam looking at her and then thinking about something.
Points to consider:
1. Will this just be a meeting between the two and he walks off when someone comes home?
2. Or could it be something dire; he has stated whilst staring at the camera that in a few hours they will need to call the doctor, does this mean that whatever was in those tablets should now have spread in her body?
3. Will anyone actually notice that there were two cups and who did the other cup belong to?
NK'S Day Out:
NK's day out and away from RM has been stressed a little too much in the last couple of episodes. We have him informing every one of that, as the excuse of why he cannot go to the Mandir with the family. Also how did Anjali know to ask HP upon her return about NK, when as far as we saw that when Aakash had called her about the trip to the Mandir, he just said that everyone is going to the Mandir?
However, she did ask HP specifically about NK, to which HP replied that he had gone out with his friend and that he will not be returning till evening. We wonder what is so important about stressing NK's being away from home so much for.
Symbolisms:
Daadi: Daadi, when she first arrived was wearing pure white colored saris for the first couple of reel days. However since the last couple of reel days, she has been wearing Beige. The white in the show represents Anjali. And since Daadi is on Anjali's side, we can infer her wearing the white. The point here is that the beige color; is that to emphasize and indicate to the viewers that Anjali is no longer so pure and an innocent party that she was before? We have seen indications of this, in her lying to not only Arnav, but the entire family, in order to meet Skunky. She has even invited the devil into the home with wide open arms.
Naani: Naani in the present day in reel life is wearing yellow, which represents Khushi. We do know and realize that she will be one of Arnav and Khushi's allies in the upcoming war with Skunky. We are also seeing Naani starting to speak up and stand upto Daadi on behalf of Khushi, as we saw in this episode, when she reminded Daadi that coming to the Mandir was Arnav's idea, when Daadi was berating Khushi for telling Arnav about the Pooja, so that he would come to the Mandir to meet Khushi.
Payal: Payal, as we mentioned yesterday in all in green with little flecks of red in there, indicating a very strong and staunch supporter of Khushi, and Arnav, because of Khushi in the upcoming battle against Skunky.
We finally leave you with the following poem by Rashdah:
"ILLUSIONS"
Illusions are better than reality
In illusions we can pretend to be happy
Hiding behind a facade we are content,
We cover that which is true with lies,
Wishing them to be true.
We don't see the danger lurking,
The one that will slowly kill us.
All she sees is her lover,
The one she cannot live without,
He is before her,
And the world is right.
She betrays for his love,
She smiles for his happiness,
She dances to his tunes,
What is the devil,
But a murderer in disguise?
Precap:
Khushi and Buaji ask Garima about her absence whilst Garima is trying real hard to run away. Khushi sees her taking out the suitcase and questions her about it, drawing Buaji's attention as well, who is also wondering what is going on.
Question Of The Day:
WHAT IS THE REASON BEHIND THIS IMPORTANCE BEING PLACED ON NK BEING OUT OF RM, AND NOT WITH THE FAMILY? WHAT DO YOU THE VIEWERS THINK IS THE REASON? DO YOU THINK IT IS SIGNIFICANT AND IF SO HOW DO YOU THINK IT IS SIGNIFICANT?
Till the next time…
