I think it's the most important part in any language. May be if they had taught it to us it would help us with other languages. Rather than us trying to apply our foreign grammer to English - that was just messy.
Oh don't worry, neither did I! Our school generation of teachers didn't believe it teaching grammar, it was all about literature, and so called death by annotation! Unfortunately, the current generation have also had to suffer the consequences for what they failed to learn during school years - grammar was something we had to re-learn whilst doing the pgce. It seems a lot of us knew how to use it, but failed to understand the reason for it's application. Unfortunately, some teachers still avoid teaching it in class, due to a lack of knowledge... I've made a conscious effort to teach myself grammar because I also missed out on it during school years, which means I'm learning alongside the kids! 😆
I tried my hand at teaching whilst at uni, don't have the patience though
