Firstly, you are entitled to your opinion.
Secondly, I don't agree with you. 😳
I personally feel Barun Sobti is a great actor...one of kind IMO. When people talk about expressions a lot of people tend to like theatrical expressions. When many people talk about acting, a lot of people tend to prefer methodical acting. Barun Sobti is all about subtlety.
I didn't watch much of his work before IPKKND. But I do remember the first time I noticed him as actor. While switching channels I happened to watch a late night repeat of an episode of his last show BHPH and in that scene, he screamed...Just get the hell out of here...I remember jumping from my seat not only because I was startled but also because the power of his voice amazed me. I was literally shivering for seconds. My instant reaction was...Man he's good.
Later when IPKKND promos came on air...I was even more awed. There is particular shot in the promo 4 where Khushi picks up some papers from the floor and stairs at her through the window. That's it's said in the Kyunki mohabbat in mein dard banke rehta hai. Back then we didn't know who ASR was...we didn't know about his dark past...but the pain and his longing for Khushi was evident in his eyes. It made me wonder why he cannot love this girl. If you mute the volume and rewatch the promo you can still feel his pain.
As ASR he has portrayed a wide range of emotions.
Being devoid of emotions...Yes that is an emotion too. In the initial episodes people found him wooden, expressionless. But back then, ASR was supposed to be like that...cold, unfeeling. He voice had to sound dead, his face had to look blank most of the time accept for the occasions where he had to look smug.
Expressing pain / affection...There are lot's scenes with Anjali where they remember their past. I remember one scene where after Anjali faints from fasting ( Back in June 2011)...They have a bro-sis moment there where....Di aap meri family ho...aap sab kuch ho. He makes it look real.
Portraying love, desire, attraction, sexual tension...he excels in all of that. There are so many moments...where do I even start?
Portraying anger ... The 15th February scene where he breaks down and screams his lungs out.
Comedy... He is great at that too.
After ASR is kidnapped there is one particular scene where ASR hallucinates Khushi...he beautifully portrays his joy of seeing her and at the time his disbelief that she's really there. When she carasses his face...it was like he was waiting for this moment all his life.
Another favorite scene of mine was during Jiji tera jethji deewana where he bursts out laughing. I never understood what people meant by tears of joy. I never really cried when I was. After Arnav bursted out of laughing, I was so happy that I had tears in my eyes...as if ASR is real.
There is another scene during the kidnapping track where he beats two of the kidnappers senseless. He didn't have any dialogues in that episode but you won't even notice until someone points it out.
As for his dialogue delivery...well I am not Indian but I have been watching Bollywood movies since I was a kid and I am fluent at Hindi and I can even read a little bit. I never had any issue understanding his dialogues...I don't have to rewatch his scenes. Besides the sound of voice completely melts me. I died when he said Hi. 😍
I have watched a lot of Bollywood movies...Yes there are better actors. Acting is a craft and just like any other craft, it gets better with practice. But that doesn't make his any less. Just because he is a TV actor, it doesn't make his less talented. 😳
In the movie black, there was a little girl who played the young Rani (forgot the name of character). She was no less than the Rani in that movie. Age or experience doesn't always matter.
As for his looks, I find him very good looking...I think he has great feature. Chiseled but too sharp or too not hard on the eyes. His profile is amazing.
Anyway...this is just my opinion. I am a Barun Sobti fangirl. 😳
Thanks for the post...I got the opportunity to praise him once again. 😉
PS : I really don't know what to say to anyone who finds Arnav in love cringe worthy. This is Arhi's love story...how can people watch it if they find 'Arnav in love cringeworthy'? 😕

One quick reply as I wait for my horrible memories of history class to pass by on the telly- I never said Barun wasn't a great actor.Only that he still has a long way to go. always remember if you do not encourage an actor to improve he will stagnate. And I want Barun to reach for the stars.
