its statistically proved to be close to real results if meters were installed in all the houses of potential IPK viewers.Now, if the channel misread who is core audience of the show, then the sample is obviously biased and results bad. but a channel of SP's caliber probably had good measures in place to avoid selection bias.look it up online for better understanding.

TRP's is calculated based on the first 3-5 minutes and GRP's are based on the audience watching the full 20mins or something.
just a correction - it's actually 8000 households currently which have TAM, which are being raised to 15000 by end of 2012 or beginning of 2013.
