Chapter 1- Ready?
"Babuji. I...I am nervous."
Shashi Gupta put down his cup of tea and newspaper on the dining table and turned to face his only daughter. He smiled at her and rested his hand over her head. "Khushi bitiya'.don't be nervous. Devi Maiyya is always by your side. Just believe that she will always be there during your good and bad times. Pray to her and you will find the strength you need. Besides, it's just first day of college. Why so nervous? You have always been a great student. Focused and determined."
Khushi smiled and thanked Devi Maiyya in her heart to give her such a wonderful father. What would she do without him? "Thank you Babuji."
"For what?"
"For always being there when I needed you the most. Especially...especially after Amma left. Thank you for everything Babuji." She got up and hugged her father. Shashi held her tight as tears threatened to flow. "You don't have to thank me. May you always get all the happiness you deserve. Your Amma would want that too. Now go and quickly get dressed. Your breakfast is ready. You don't want to be late on your first day."
Khushi rushed to her room and pulled out her favorite pink and green salwar kameez. It had intricate chickan detailing, a colorful dupatta with golden borders and the part she loved the most, the dangling pom-poms hanging by the side of the puffed sleeves. She was nervous but excited. Khushi Kumari Gupta was all set for her first day at college. But was she ready for what her Devi Maiyya had planned for her?

Arnav Singh Raizada stood in front of his mirror as he buttoned his crisp white shirt.
Anjali stood outside his room with a pooja thaal in her palms. She knocked at his door. "Chotte?"
Arnav rolled his eyes. "Come in Di. How many times do I have to tell you that you don't need my permission before entering my room and secondly'" He turned to face her. "Please'stop calling me Chotte."
"OK Chotte!" Anjali laughed and teasingly ruffled Arnav's hair.
"DI! I had just brushed them!"
Anjali sighed. "My little brother...my Chotte has grown up. He is finally going to college."
"Di. It's just college. I am not running elections. So, don't worry. Besides, I told you, a lot of my friends are going to the same college. I will have company if that is what is bothering you."
Anjali nodded and spooned a small amount of curd from the bowl in the thaal bringing it near Arnav's mouth.
"Di'"
"Yes Chotte. I know you don't believe in all this. But please...for my sake."
Arnav shook his head disbelievingly at how easily his sister got her way. He opened his mouth and she pushed the spoon inside. "Happy?" He asked.
"Very. I just wish Papa was here too'"
"Di please. You know I don't like'"
"Talking about him? But Chotte, he is your father. For how long will you run away from him? He still loves you'"
"Is that why he left us in the first place? Is that why Mama never mentions him? Because...because he loves me? Please Di. Don't give me that crap."
"But Chotte..."
"Please Di. I am already getting late. Aakash and NK must have already reached the campus. They must be waiting for me. I need to leave."
"Alright Chotte. Have a good day. And please don't end up fighting with some poor guy. Nobody is aware of your wild temper yet."
"Yes Di."
"And take Mama's blessings before you leave."
"She must be too busy handling her business associates. I am sure she doesn't even remember that it's my first day at college. She simply doesn't care. So let it be that way. I have your blessings and that's enough for me."
Anjali shook her head from side to side indicating that she had given up. She marked his forehead with a red tilak and hurriedly made her way towards the door.
"DI!" He cried out annoyingly.
"Bye Chotte!"
He huffed and looked back into the mirror. He finger combed his ruffled hair and wiped the tilak off his forehead and scurried out the door. He was all set for his first day at college. But was he ready for what was planned for him by the God he didn't believe in?
