OS: Blind Paths
He opened the door and hastily started walking towards his bedroom, when he the aroma of freshly fried jalebis reached his nostrils. He knew where she was.
Dressed in a beautiful pink sari , she paced across the kitchen , glancing across the clock that didn't know to wait .He would be here any time . She had to finish off her work soon.
He moved closer towards the kitchen , his steps pacing faster with each second. The clinking of the bangles became louder and so did his heart bounced sharply.
It was their first anniversary.
The clock struck ten. She immersed herself into her work, moving her hands swiftly over the gas stove, when she felt her skin tingle to the rhythm's of her heart. He slid his arms across her waist and turned her towards him.
Khushi turned towards him, and before she could even see his face, he pulled her into his arms.
She froze in her place. This was the first time he had done something like this. She melted in his arms and wished she could enclose her hands across him, if only her hands were not smeared with jalebi batter.
" Don't ever leave me khushi, never.. I can't-", he spoke in a plaintive tone , burying himself deeper in her silky hair.
" what happened arnavji? ", khushi asked , worried over this sudden surge of emotion outpouring from him.
He softly pulled himself away from her and looked in her eyes for a brief moment before turning away . In a few seconds he had disappeared into the house.
She was rendered speechless. At first , her senses had stopped working , when he glided her into his arms. She was in a beautiful place. But then, the tinge of fear in his voice, the tear in his eye that was strong enough not to roll , bothered her. She would ask him at the dinner table.
There lay his favourite dishes , a sweet scent filling in the air. He quietly took his place while she served him peacefully. It was a moment of awkwardness after what had happened a while ago.
It had only been a few weeks since they had dispelled all the misunderstanding that threatened to loosen their trust . They both knew how much they needed each other. If only it was easy to portray..
Their anniversary became an opportunity for khushi, to create a life she had always dreamt of.
For him celebrations had never mattered. All he knew, that she was there today with him , and that became his satisfaction.
"Khushi, u planning to make me a pumpkin", he whispered softly, trying to break the silence he despised when she was here. He knew why she had gone so silent.
" Wh-what-", she stared at him surprised . A while back he had fallen so weak and now he was chuckling away, attempting to make her smile.
" well, the food is '", he paused, and looked into her lovely eyes.
" I know its good, I made it with all my heart", she quickly added without thinking and suddenly sealed her lips.
His eyes grew large, and he smiled gleefully.
"arnavji, what happened to u back then, I mean you looked worr-",she finally brought out the question, wondering if he would answer her.
" Nothing khushi, just a bad day..", he answered her looking away .
She wasn't surprised with his answer. This was arnav.
The dinner continued . He devoured every morsel , knowing it was indeed made with love.
" You remember Abhay,khushi?"
She gave a confused look, trying to recall the name.
" He handled the accounts section in my office."
"Oh, yes.. I remember him, what happened" , she inquired.
" His-his wife expired today o-of cancer", the words kept choking in his throat.
" I had gone to the funeral, and when I saw him cry that way.. it reminded me of " , he trailed off .
She weeped incessantly . They both knew how it was to lose the loved ones.
It was clear to her now. The way he hugged her, begging her not to leave him, the sadness In his eyes was because he had been reminded today how much his loved ones mean to him . He was scared to lose her.
He retired to bed in a short while, without uttering a word about his employee's loss or his own weakness.
Khushi went in their room , her thoughts engaged in the happenings that had taken place today. He slept soundly ,and she heaved a sigh of relief. She moved to swithch off the lights when her eyes fell on a gift wrapper.
Impatiently, she opened it, to find a box immaculately packed. Once she flipped open the box,her eyes were greeted with a beautiful thing.
A frame that had their picture together.She ran her hands over it as tears streamed her face. Another little box fell over. She looked at it surprised.
A diamond ring. It shone with love. Khushi slid it soflty in her finger , it would be there forever.
She felt the happiness inside. God had blessed her with with so many things. And above all so many loved ones.
She slipped into the bed , and snuggled close to him. He held her hand in his sleep as the dangling stars over their bed twinkled for the night.
