I can't seem to understand why hindi TV shows start losing their logic gradually. Earlier shows used to have ambiguous storylines that never used to end...generations upon generations of Ekta Kapoor's family shows used to regurgitate the same old formula and expect the viewers to swallow it down. They did too, until their patience ran out and subsequently all K-shows wound up.
Then we had fresher, to-the-point, theme/ plot-driven serials coming up : Balika Vadhu (dealing with the ills of child marriage), Uttaran (poor-rich divide), etc etc and more recently Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? dealing with a love-story with a twist. Whereas all these shows started with a bang and viewers could atlast hope to see some "sensitive" matter, what eventually happened was that these shows started harking back to the ancient saas-bahu/ cheesy romance formulas, thereby killing the viewers' interests.
I would just like to touch upon Balika Vadhu before before I launch into a full-fledged attack on IPKKND (which is what I mainly want to talk about). Balika Vadhu's makers have always said that the show espouses an anti-child marriage stance. But the tagline "Kachhi Umar Ke Pakke Rishte" tells a different story. Are they really showing an anti child-marriage show or are they infact endorsing it? Every husband-wife relationship in the show (except Anandi-Jagya) has been shown to be extremely strong, despite the fact that all of them are child-marriage couples. How can you show "anti-child marriage" when you are showing such strong relationships?? And how do you expalin the tagline? How is it anti child-marriage?? And even when Jagya has left Anandi, why are the makers not being able to root him out of her life for good?? If the heroine of the show NEEDS to have a man in her life, then why not bring a new guy, and show SOME advancement in thought? And also, if one remembers, Anandi starts studying in order to "match up to her husband's standards" and not for her own self! What Crap!
Anyway, going over to IPKKND, there's another good show going to the dogs! I feel the makers just hurried into everything. In any case, the tagline "Nafrat Paas Aane na De, Mohabbat Door Jaane Na De" narrows down the possibilities of the show. Think about it - How long can they hate each other? They will eventually crack up and admit their love. ASR will change for KKG and then the show will become a cheesy love affair (in any case, the overtly prolonged Rabba Ve moments are cringe-inducing) and the tagline would no longer be valid. The tagline makes the show's shelf-life REALLY short! What the makers could have done is, rather than rushing into the story, they could have taken things a bit more slowly at the beginning. It is a known fact that the possibilities of a plot-driven story decline by the day. Hence going slowly with the "first meeting", the subsequent encounters, the Payal-Akash wedding would have given the show some breathing space. And the Shyaam affair has reached a height (as expected, the whole formulaic sacrificing-female image of the heroine is being played up!!). ASR's suave image is breaking to bits and despite all the b***s**t about KKG being strong and all that the show seems to espouse, she's actually being a ninny. She lets, both Shyaam and ASR, manhandle her. All we get to see is Khushi being pushed, pulled, arm-twisted, bruised (by ASR) and inappropriately touched, harassed, passed lewd comments at (by Shyaam). The HEIGHT of it was when Shyaam forcibly hugged her on the balcony and she didn't attempt to break free OR shout OR do ANYTHING about it till about a GOOD few minutes had passed! Like WHAT was that??
And WHY, OH WHY doesn't ASR tell KKG what she has done? Is he SO disgusted he can't utter it? And WHY did she not tell anyone that ASR was trying to bully her into marrying him during Payal's marriage! Is she THAT dumb, that she believes that Akash will break off the marriage just because ASR asks him to do so?? And what was the point of the whole "I'll make Payal-Akash divorce" sequence by ASR?? Was it done to somehow show the heroine (KKG) as pea-brained?? LOGIC!! WHERE'S THE LOGIC??
We want the Khushi, whose very brief glance we got during the guesthouse-falling-off-confrontation sequence, back!! We want HER to push, pull, bruise (with her words, she can't do it physically :P) ASR for once, instead of the other way round!!
Do please leave your comments! I'll come back with another detailed post on all the twists that this once-upon-a-time brilliant show can possibly come up with! Stay tuned! 😉
