And yet we distrust each other because it's our only defense against betrayal.
I don't know about love. But I do believe that the feelings Arnav has for Khushi run deep and beyond care. Whatever he's doing now is because of scars from his past, a bond that existed before Khushi came into his life (the bond between him and Anjali), and lastly because of the fact that Khushi set up her own ruin by keeping the truth from him.
I think that right now it's about Arnav's sister and the deception that Shyam pulled off for years. In addition to that, it's also about how Arnav feels exposed and vulnerable - he allowed his walls to come down around Khushi, he smiled to her, bought her bangles, and showed her through his actions that he has strong feelings for her.
Then he saw her with Shyam and the betrayal slammed into him. She didn't come clean which only confirmed his misperception of her character. Arnav is a tough and damaged man. But he tried, tried hard to trust and be gentle - he was betrayed once again (or so he believes). His reasons for marrying Khushi are still grey to me. I think there's more than just the need to punish the supposed "lovers" behind the contract.
Arnav is a difficult character to understand. He shows that he cares in his own way. But when he feels betrayed or rejected, he counters it with heat and ice. Here's a man who has a dark past, a traumatic past - a man who has had a cold and cost/benefit mentality since his teenage days, struggled with protecting his sister while making his way to the top, dealing with people like you deal with objects. That man started to slowly change pieces of himself in order to woo Khushi - only to find her in Shyam's arms. Not just some random guy. But Shyam.
I dunno. Maybe love can have more shades than one. Maybe it can be as dark as it can be light. But whatever Arnav feels for Khushi, I believe it's pure and honest and painful. It matters to him, it altered him, it began to open up his heart - a door that was slammed shut the second he faced the supposed betrayal. For a man who has trust issues already, this reaction was expected, I guess.
One could turn the question around and wonder... if Khushi's feelings came close to love, then wouldn't she tell him the truth about Shyam? Wouldn't she confide in him? Wouldn't she feel that he deserved to know the truth?
