Oh wow suri, second chapter and I'm already loving this. Hmm I wonder why Sameer married Aastha! And aww Aastha sees her daughter with Shlok's eyes😳 Btw when you wrote the scene where Aastha would sitcon sit on the side and watch people go pass, and how she recognised Shlok by just his shoes! And then when he came and sat next to her and she saw her daughters eyes in him! It was truly a beautiful scene, and very well written suriya👏👏 oh soo Shlok has a daughter interesting! nWonder what happens now. Chapter 3
A quick shiver quivered the stillness of the water; the magnificent Bosphoros flowed darkly and mysteriously beside and beneath the convoy of ferries leading us from the European side to the Asian where Sameer was invited for an official dinner. He somehow thought it better to take me with him. I wondered why he never chose to drive; I would rather have preferred going through the bridge which blew in its mightiness above us. On one side it was the great Bosphoros and on the other the Sultan Mehmet Bridge and I was stuck between them in a haunting trip through water. It wasn't completely dark and there were enough people to distract me but I still felt its stillness creeping up me...
The Turks were lovely hosts. One never felt out of place when in a gathering with them. They always had much more than something to offer. While Sameer joined his lot I was captivated by the serene hospitality their wives had to offer.
"You have a beautiful wife Sameer..." The man beside him said taking my hand in his and kissing its back. I looked at Sameer in embarrassment while he smiled politely at his friend.
"Thank You..." I muttered.
I guess I was beautiful in everyone's eyes but my husband's. He would always want to shun away when I was around. My several attempts at studying his behavior around me lead me nowhere. He was kind and polite but not the way he should be. Not the way I wanted him to be. There was a void between us... the one none of us ever thought of filling. I could never come to the conclusion that he ostracized me or did not like me... because...
"Because what?" Sohai once asked me. I looked on and shrugged.
"No... not because what...Just because..."
And it never made sense to her. She was of the idea that Sameer's lack of attention towards me had driven me insane. She was wrong.
A while later I decided to waft away and knock on Sohai's apartment a few streets down. She had a surprise; I knew she wanted me to see another old class-fellow, Sofie, but telling her I knew would have been discourteous. But before I left Sameer had his eyes glued upon me; as if it somehow pained him when I left him everywhere before he wanted to leave. Even though I had texted him he still seemed to have an air of bewilderment around him. And as soon as I walked out guilt took over me; great! That is what he always does... But how am I supposed to stick around all the time.
"Why are you dressed up like an old hag?" I heard Sofie addressing a neighbor girl. Sofie, tall and tan, still considerably gorgeous bloomed in her marvelous beauty of womanhood. Her blue jeans and suburban top reminded me of her ages old fashion she still carried out with a sensible pride.
"But dad say's I look like a princess in white." Came the reply; it felt like the tiny girl wanted to slam the door shut on her face.
"Your dad doesn't have a taste..." Sofie replied harshly sticking her tongue out; gross it was purple... she must have been into smoking.
"What's wrong with you Sofie?" I pulled her away from leaning on the little girl. "Why are you being a witch?"
She laughed aloud. The girl ran inside slamming the door shut behind her.
"I don't really have a taste for these young beings..." She said pulling me up in her embrace. I shook my head; Sofie's audacity wasn't a surprise for anyone; in any case. She was the one who loved being insensitive and hardnosed with people around her.
"But the heart can break at any age..."
"You are so different woman!" She chimed; rolling her eyes and knocking at the door again.
"What? Again? Leave her will you?" I suggested; banging Sohai's door instead. Sofie laughed her infectious laughter again.
"Her dad's a hunk...I thought we'd call him today to join us." She winked and finally the door she was banging opened. Shlok came out rubbing a towel behind his head.
"What's wrong with you Sofie? What did you say to Kavya?" He groaned and then stopped seeing me behind her. A scowl appeared across his forehead and then disappeared.
"You were coming too?" He asked caressing his daughter's hair; who had clung to his right leg. I smiled nodding a yes.
"I am coming!" He grinned seeing Sofie frown all at once.
"Fine but you are not bringing your little Barbie with you..."
"Shut up! Sofia..." He said lazily; plodding back inside.
"It's Sofie!" She barked behind him. I couldn't help but laugh. Sohai opened her door and I grabbed her by her neck.
"You hideous creature... you never told me about your new neighbors!" I snarled giving her a gruesome stare. She pretended to be suffocating.
"He's here..." She said sickly and sweetly making me let go at once. Shlok came next to me. Sofie and Kavya shoved past us bickering all the while; little Kavya had finally gotten used to her dady's new not-so-friendly friend.
"How are you?" He asked gazing me in the eyes. I wanted to look away but it was so captivating. I laughed remembering his question.
"How are you?" I asked instead and he laughed in reply too. We always did that.
"Come on you two... I am getting old here!" Sofie yelled at us and we realized we were still standing in the lobby. As we walked in my nostrils flared at the appealing aroma of Turkish Chorba and the little bakery So would always open in any gathering at her home; she was a little too affluent with pleasantries.
"How was the surprise Astha?" Sohai asked shifting Kavya in her lap.
"Which one?" I giggled, Sofie threw me a cushion. Shlok sat beside me with Kavya jumping up in his lap.
"You have so many girlfriends dad..." She whispered being careful no one but her dad heard her. Shlok looked up at me when I was going to burst out laughing.
"Did you say hello to my best friend Kay?" He squeezed her cheeks. Kavya looked up at me and then with a sudden burst of emotions embraced me in her tiny arms. I gaped at Shlok in utter surprise raising my brows. He shrugged. I, having no personal affiliation with kids her age, wondered what it must mean when a kid suddenly hugs you. I hugged her back with equal delight and pulled her up in my arms; she smiled and started playing with the maroon lace in my neck; my mangalsutra. I froze at the thought.
"Mum wore it too." She whispered not in my ears; perhaps not to me but to herself. And that's why I fear children; they say things you would not want to hear. Her sudden emotional dilemma was actually a dj vu; she missed her mom. I tried focusing on her hair, caressing my fingers in them; dreadfully trying to ignore Shlok beside me who was perceptibly noticing the whole thing; he sighed and got up. I saw him leave towards Sohai.
"You miss her?" I asked Kavya.
"No..." She said abruptly, "I don't.. she said she is happy leaving dad and he cried when she left and...she says she won't let me live with him."
"You don't want to leave him?"
She shook her head.
"Who bought you this amazing dress?" It was important to distract her; she was so down. And my question cheered her instantly.
"Daddy... He loves white!"
"I know..."
"That's why you are wearing it too?"
I laughed because I wore white ever since I knew he liked it; it became more of my fascination since the day.
Kavya wasn't a happy child; sadly her broken family had left imprints on her soul; marks she would realize only when she would reach an age where they finally settle on your existence, when you start seeing them all over you. They start shattering your confidence; they start shattering you. She had a compassion perfectly angelic but who knows when these innocent compassions are over taken by the demons living with in us. Thinking about her an eternity of silence oppressed me and I could not participate in anything my friends were following that night. I had to excuse myself from the world of morbid horrors I had created for the little girl.
I walked towards the attached balcony in Sohai's apartment with an iceness, a sinking , a sickening of the heart. Why something inside me compared her longing with mine? We were so different in that respect; I had a choice she did not. I gazed at the hefty grey expanse of the sea in a nameless sadness which is always born of the moonlight.
"What have you become?" His mock grave voice flickered its tone in the blow from the sea breeze. "You were never so insensitive...then why this cruelty with yourself?"
I had mentally imagined this conversation with him for far too many times to remember. But the moment it came I was in oblivion.
Damn you two..😡
