Chapter 1

"Yes those cards and bouquets were from me." Shlok, who had been running away from Astha since morning, finally put up a brave face and answered the question he dreaded. It weren't only the questions he dreaded but more then everything he dreaded her reaction. Yes he dreaded her reaction to his proposal. After a prolonged wait of five months he had finally decided to deliver his feelings to her someway.

"Are you crazy Shlok?" Astha looked at him incredulously. They had been together for six months only. Working under him; she had never realized his feelings for her. Could he feel that way for me? The question boomed in her mind. No, it could not happen. Even if it had, it was one sided only. She decided for herself. Shlok wasn't the person she wanted to spend a life with. She never took any deep interest in people's lives but Shlok, in his case it was different. She had seen so many shades of him with in such a short span of time. He had been extremely strict when it came to work, on the other hand he proved to be a remarkable son. But the moment she wanted to register him as a good human beings his bitter conversations with his ex-fiance clicked in her mind. She had become edgy towards him the day his ex had created a huge drama against him. She had started to believe the same thing about him as she perceived about others men. They knew nothing but betrayal; she professed.

"Big deal Astha... Mujhe lagta hai ke hum ek achi zindagi saath guzar sakte hain. Moreover, I Love you!... I have confessed, do you not believe me?"

"It's not about believing you... Shlok mein ap ko janti hi kitna hoon. Siwaye iss ke keh aap mere Boss hain, hum dono ek dusre ke bare mein kuch bhi to nahi jante... phir ap ke dil mein meray liye aisi feelings kaise janam le sakti hain..."

"Tumhe nah lagta tumhe koi bhi faisla karne se pehle thora wakt dena chahiye humare iss rishtey ko?"

"Shlok mein ise koi rishta nahi manti... aur na hi ise time dena chahti hoon! Balke mein tu filhal kisi bhi rishtay mein khud ko nahi bandhna chahti."

"I promise I will keep you happy...just give me a chance Astha." He pleaded. She avoided any eye contact with him, eye contacts make you weak in such circumstances.

"I don't believe you Shlok!" She voiced out her greatest fears, yes she did not believe he could be the one to keep her happy. It was a doubt very clear for her. Her words left him speechless for a while.

"You are not rejecting me Astha?" He could not believe it.

Astha shook her head and stepped out of his way.

"My answer is no." She murmured. He neared her only to make her move steps away from him.

"Please...you know this much! I cant take rejection in life... I will go to any extent to get you."

"I know you cant take rejection but I cant take betrayal in life, Shlok." She said so right in his eyes; surprising him yet again.

"You think I will betray you?"

She wanted to say yes but neither her voice nor her body supported her.

"I do not know but I know you will hurt me... You are much too aggressive and possessive. You can go to extents to get what you want."

"and right now I want you in my life..." He said instead of expressing his surprise at her response.

"we are not made for eachother... Tum meray sath zabardasti kar ke sirf mujhe sahi prove karo ge Shlok."

"tum theek hi kab ho jo mein tumhe sahi prove karun..."

"Why don't you understand Shlok?" She was frustrated.

"Understand what Astha?"

She shook her head and stormed out of the room leaving a shaken Shlok behind. He could not believe what just had happened. She had left him all alone with the shattered pieces of the dreams; a world of dreams he had knitted in his mind. But little did Astha know Shlok was invincible, and he had decided to make her a part of his life and so he would go to any extent to make sure she was his and his only.

"You are a challenge now!" He clutched the cards she had left in his clenched fist; tightening his jaw a little more.

Astha walked on the abandoned street with Shlok's voice reverberating in her ears. Life had thrown so much on her that now she dreaded any turmoil in it. She had been orphaned at the age one starts to speak; the life in the orphanage was flat, opaque and lonely. She was married off by her Uncle at eighteen, to someone she hardly knew. From one lone hell she was transferred into another. There wasn't only dearth of understanding between her husband and her but also a complete absence of affinity. The marriage ended bitterly after mere six months. She was now left alone again. She did not know if it was life which had betrayed her or the people in her life.

But Astha proved all rights against her wrong. She worked to make herself something. She got over the paranoia of losing in life. She left behind the bitter memories and started off with a new life. A life striving for success and to the better of her talisman she did make it; she did stand up from the ashes like a phoenix. Her hard work paid back and today she stood there where she once imagined herself to be.

She made herself a complete woman; even though still alone she had emerged out as a dreamer who could achieve what she perceived and believed. She wasn't poor anymore, wasn't in the shadows of paranoia anymore; wasn't being eaten up by nightmares.

And when life had finally settled into a safe haven Shlok had entered her life. He had perturbed all her peace of mind. Astha, lacked the ability to believe in someone, after all life had bestowed upon her; it was natural. She did not know what she felt for him; somewhere deep inside may be she actually fantasized him to be the one. But for now she was in a chaos whether to accept this incoming rain in her life or to keep away in her safe haven, in the boundary, the fence she had created around her. She feared the rain to accompany a thunder instead of blessings.

In her dilemma she did not realize where she had come. Crossing the avenue she heard Shlok's strident voice shouting out her name.

"Asthaaa..."

She turned around to find an emerging car galloping towards her. Before she could move an inch, it was too late, everything happened in a jiff. There was a complete blackout after that. Shlok ran madly for her, hopping it wasn't too late already.
