Advay stood under the cold shower in his room calming his pounding heart. He looked down at himself. He was still insanely aroused, but Chandini didn't have it in her to keep up with him. He had to let her rest. The cold water helped him calm himself but it was going to take a lot more than that tonight. He had had one of the best nights of his life and it had been his wedding night with the girl he loved. He blushed ever so slightly to himself. He had come clean of his intentions, she knew what his expectations were and had agreed to play with him fully aware of who he was. He stared at his reddened tingling palm. He wasn't sure how many times he had landed his palm across her soft bottom, but was certain it had been more than twenty, given how red his palm looked. He was impressed with her endurance. She had taken quite a few blows for her first time. Maybe she enjoyed pain, he frowned to himself. If she did, she would complement his perfectly. A masochist built for her sadist. He chuckled, his Baba had been right, they were made for each other.
He couldn't wait to see what she would do when she would find it impossible to sit down the following day. His Chandini had agreed to play with him, he smirked to himself with victory. She had looked delectable in the little dress he had dolled her up in. He groaned as blood rushed to his groin, he just wanted to go back and plough hard into her again. Was he ever going to have his fill of her? Maybe not.
Tears welled his eyes at how easily she had given herself again. The last time they had come together had knocked the breath out of his lungs. They had come apart together while holding each other's gaze. It was a deeply emotional experience for him, he had never come together with anyone, had never let anyone watch him in his moment of pleasure. But with her, he was lost in her gaze, like she had trapped him in her spell. She had touched him somewhere deep. He sighed, he had fallen in love with her all over again. He wanted to make love to her, but for now he was going to have to stay in control of himself and play the role of the master that he was. He needed to gain her trust, needed to break her obsessive bond with Indrani, was going to have to shift her loyalty from Indrani to himself and for that he was going to have to toughen up.
He finally got changed into his sweat pants and took out the locket from his box. He smiled at the girl in the picture and kissed her softly. He didn't know if she was still alive inside Chandini but today his Chandini belonged to him and his parents and his master had blessed their union. He brushed his fingers against the smiling picture of his mother. This was all he had of her, memories. He sighed as he clutched the locket to his heart and rested his head on his pillow forcing himself to sleep. But sleep was hard to come like always. He kept shifting on his bed staring at the blank ceiling. He had waited for too long, it had been too long since he had last made love to her. His arousal poked its head at him from inside his sweat pants. He looked down at the tent in his pants and sighed. He was losing control, Chandini was in command of his body now. He put the locket back into the box and followed his feet to her room.
He took a deep breath and slid into her room on silent feet and smiled to find her sleeping in the exact position he had left her in. She looked peaceful yet exhausted. He knelt beside her and kissed her perfect mouth again. Chandini instinctively wrapped her hand around his neck. He sighed to himself as he slipped into her bed and held her against his heart. Chandini whimpered cuddling his heart, as soon as he wrapped her in his arms. He admired her beautiful face and kissed her again on her mouth. She was finally where she belonged, in his arms on his bed, pressed against his body. He tucked them warm in the blanket he had wrapped her in and decided to watch her for a while. It felt warm inside his heart to have her pinned against his body. He kissed her again.
Chandini fluttered her heavy eyelids, the birds chirped outside. What time was it, she frowned? The sun hadn't yet risen and her body felt exhausted beyond reason. She felt warm and cozy. Where was she? She wondered, as her gaze fell on the strings of roses that dropped around her bed. She gasped as the memories of the previous day flashed before her eyes. Everything felt like a dream. Her hand urgently searched her neck to ensure she wasn't dreaming. She gasped again as soon as she clutched on to the delicate black beads around her neck. This wasn't a dream, she was married...to Advay Singh Raizada. A shiver ran down her spine to find a masculine hand wrapped her around her waist and another across her chest cupping her bare breast. She slowly turned her head to her side to find Advay sleeping beside her, holding her in his arms. She gasped but blushed as soon as the memories of the previous night flashed before her eyes. Her body felt sore, but he was here to keep her warm. He looked peaceful in his deep slumber. She smiled again to herself, she was wrapped in his arms, spooned in his arms with his warm chest pressed against her back. She leaned back into his chest and revelled in the warmth of his body. The graze of his beard against her cheek felt divine and his heady musky perfume sent her head spinning.
Something poked in her back, she frowned what was it? She gasped out loud as soon as she realised it was his arousal poking her in the small of her back. What time was it? Was he awake? She turned her head again to her side. He was in deep sleep, yet he was aroused against her. She giggled softly, this man was going to be the death of her. His lips were just inches away from her mouth. She wanted to kiss him but stopped herself just in case she should wake him up. He was here holding her in his arms, despite telling her he would never sleep in her bed. A soft smile curled at the corners of her mouth. Maybe he did care for her. Maybe there was still hope.
Sleep wanted to consume again, but she felt a strange tug in her belly. She sighed, she needed to pee, hence whey she had woken up. She scanned around, how was she meant to get out of his arms without waking him up. But she had to go urgently, she couldn't hold herself any longer. He had wound her tight in his arms, his leg wrapped around her trapping her, pinning her to his body and to the bed. She tried to squirm from under him. Advay groaned softly, tightening his grip around her waist. She sighed, how was she meant to get out of his steel grip? But the pressure in her bladder was killing her. Maybe it was time she woke him up, she shrugged her shoulders with a sigh.
"Jee,' She whispered admiring his perfect face. He didn't budge.
"Suniye...Jee,' She whispered again. Tears welled her eyes, he was her husband now. Memories of the first time she had crashed into him flashed before her, memories of him declaring to her that he was her husband to be. He had fulfilled his promise, he was her husband now. There was no way she could say his name ever.
"Suniye naa Jee,' She choked on her tears as she shook him gently. Advay stirred grunting to himself.
"Jee... I need to go,' He squinted his eyes at her, where was he? Chandini watched him with desperation. Advay smiled to find her trapped in his arms. He wound his arms tighter around her and pinned her closer to his body. He wasn't letting her out of his arms, he just wanted to sleep for a little while longer pressed against her soft curves.
"I need to go,' She whispered.
"Hmm.'
"I need the washroom.'
He held her gaze in his sleepy eyes. He felt incredibly aroused with the way her bottom was pressed against his arousal. He slid his hand down between her legs and massaged her wetness. Chandini gasped, this was the last thing she needed right now. She was desperate for a wee.
"Please,' She squeaked, "I need to go... please let me go.'
He chuckled softy at how cute she sounded trapped in his arms. A wicked thought of forcing her to hold on to herself while he pounded hard into her crossed his mind. But she looked exhausted beyond reason as she continued to plead him with desperate eyes. But he could play with her for a little while longer.
"Go on take a leak on me,' He whispered, pulling her closer to his body. "I am letting you go anywhere...not yet.'
Chandini gasped out loud. He wanted her to do what? She shook her head furiously, her eyes turned wide like saucers. This man was insane, and was here to wreck her world, and he had only just woken up.
"It's ok, take a leak on me, I won't mind,' He whispered against her cheek, "in fact I would enjoy it, it would turn me on beyond reason and then I could f**k you some more.'
She gasped again, this was the weirdest morning she had ever had. She was surely married to a crazy perverted man.
"Please,' She squirmed and wriggled, as Advay chuckled to himself. This was the most interesting morning he had ever had.
"Please... please I need to,' She pleased with him. He finally let go of her. Chandini scrambled out of the bed. Pain shot through her body stabbing her everywhere. She felt her knees wobble and her legs turn to jelly as soon as she stood up on her feet. Advay gasped the moment Chandini held his gaze in her panic-stricken eyes and collapsed to the floor.
"Chandini,' He jumped out the bed and gathered her limp body in his arms. She rested her head on his chest and panted for breath.
"What's wrong?' He gasped again to find her in the state that she was.
"I feel weak,' She whispered, "my legs, they feel like jelly. It hurts everywhere.'
He nodded, pouring her a glass of juice and holding it up to her lips. She sipped slowly while he supported her against his chest. He finally scooped her in his arms and carried her into the bathroom.
Advay sighed waiting for her outside the bathroom. He had slept the night with her, he shook his head in despair. All he had wanted to do was hold her for some time, but it looked like sleep had finally consumed him. How was he meant to stick to his plan at this rate? But it was their wedding night, maybe he could slack for a couple of days to just give her some time to adjust into her new life. He sighed again, who was he kidding, he wanted to hold her in his arms every night and rock her to sleep.
"Suniye Jee.' Advay smiled to himself jolting out of his trance. She had the sweetest voice he had ever heard, just like the birds singing outside. He stepped into the bathroom and held her gaze. She blushed, lowering her gaze and clinging on to the little dress that clung to her petite curves.
"Feeling better,' He asked gathering her in his arms. She shook her head in denial, she felt exhausted. It hadn't been this bad the last time, why did she feel so consumed this time around? Advay sat her on the bed and handed her another glass of juice, a painkiller and a bar of chocolate. Chandini frowned at the bar of chocolate. Where had that come from?
"Eat.' He commanded. "Eat and go back to bed. You need to rest.'
She nodded and ate the chocolate without a word of protest. She was hungry strangely so. Advay raked his fingers through her soft silken hair and swept it away from her face. He leaned to kiss her cheek all the way down her jaw and her neck. Chadnini moaned softly curling her toes. Would he ever stop? Not that she wanted him to.
"You look beautiful Chandini,' He grazed his hands across her shoulder and her chest, finally resting it on her mangalsutra.
"You are mine now.' He said brushing his fingers against the delicate beads
She blushed as she leaned on his chest and nibbled at her chocolate. She giggled to herself, to be eating a bar of chocolate first thing in the morning.
"What time is it?' She asked.
"Half past six.'
"What time do you have your coffee,' She lifted her gaze to his, "Should I make you a cup of coffee?'
"Don't worry about me,' He said, "you finish your chocolate and go back to sleep. I'll wake you up later.'
"Why am I exhausted?' She finally asked sliding back into her bed while Advay wrapped her in a blanket, "I didn't feel like this the last time.'
"Because I was careful the last time,' He sighed, "I didn't f**k you rough, I made love to you, that's the difference.'
She nodded, but the ache was sweet, she liked it for some strange reason. Advay tucked her in her bed and turned around to leave.
"Don't leave me,' She held his arm, "please stay, at least till I fall asleep.'
Advay sighed to himself as he slipped into her bed and wrapped her in his arms. He wanted to sleep for another hour or two, he just wanted to hold her for some more time.
"This is the first and the last time I am sleeping with you,' He said cuddling her closer.
She nuzzled against him, he was in her bed now and now was all that mattered.
"Does it hurt badly?' He asked stroking her bottom.
"Hmm,' She massaged her neck, "but it feels good.'
He chuckled. "Looks like you like pain.'
"Hmm...I don't know,' She sighed, "this is a good kind of pain. It...it reminds me.'
"Reminds you,' He brushed his lips against her, drawing another soft moan from her lips. "Reminds you of what?'
"Of last night.'
"Hmm,' He sucked her lips, sucking on the sweet chocolate smeared on her lips, "that's the whole point of this game.'
She frowned.
"To constantly remind you of me and of all the things I did to do, even when I am not there.'
She blushed.
"There,' He kissed her red flushed cheeks, "to make you blush and turn you on every time your body hurts...to bring back memories of the previous night. Do you remember what we did last night?'
She blushed again frowning to herself. She didn't remember all of it. Why?
"I don't remember all of last night,' She finally whispered lifting her gaze to his dark eyes. "How many times did I...'
"Five.'
"And you?'
"How does that matter?'
She shrugged her shoulders, she was just being curious.
"Twice.'
She blushed burying her head in his chest.
"Did I please you?' She whispered.
"You did, you pleased me immensely.'
She smiled to herself.
"Did I pleasure you?' He asked.
She nodded softly, but she only remembered parts of it, it felt hazy.
"Why can't I remember?' She frowned, "I have gaps in my memory.'
"Hmm...you were in and out of it, lost in trance.' He smiled at her, "it happens. It's common. The cocktail of pain and pleasure does strange things to the mind.'
She held his gaze considering his words. It was the blend of pain and pleasure that had felt exquisite, she had wanted it to last forever.
"Do you remember holding the headboard?' He asked.
She nodded, she remembered that. But everything after that seemed hazy.
"Do you remember that wall?' He pointed to the wall beside the mirror. She shook her head. Advay chuckled softly.
"I took you against that wall, you don't remember?'
She shook her head again.
"You came twice...violently and passed out in my arms.' She held his gaze in shock, why didn't she remember anything? This was scary.
"Do you remember that last time?'
"I do, but its hazy.'
"What do you remember?'
"I was lost in your gaze, it was beautiful,' She sighed, "I felt warm inside my heart. I felt I didn't exist anymore, like I was lost inside you...forever.'
"You were,' He brushed his lips against hers, glad she didn't remember the last time they came apart, glad she hadn't seen him in his moment of passion, or she would have known how deeply he felt for her.
"Something happened to me in that moment.' She said, "what happened to me?'
"You belong to me now, you gave yourself without holding anything back,' He said with pride, "I own you now, all of you.'
"Did you feel it too?'
"No.' He lied.
She nodded ruefully, her heart shattered all over again.
"I am a master, I don't let emotions get the better of me,' He said wearing his blank mask, "everything happens at my will. I am always in control and the only thing that matters to me is how to use you so I can enhance your pleasure and mine... that's all.'
"It didn't mean anything to you?' She choked on her tears. She had handed him her heart on a platter and yet again it didn't mean a thing to him. She shivered in his arms.
"No,' Advay said. "Like I said I have no place for emotions in my life. This is purely physical.'
She rested her head into his chest. He had nothing to lose yet she had lost everything to him. Tears stung her eyes. She had fallen in love with him, yet he didn't feel anything for her.
"Now sleep, and let me sleep,' He kissed her eyes shut, "I have work to go to.'
She sighed softly and turned to her side.
"Can you hold me from behind, like you were before?'
"You want me to spoon you?' He said wrapping his arms around her and pinning her to his chest.
"Hmm,' She sighed closing her eyes, if this moment was all she could have, she would happily live this moment forever "it feels good. It feels warm...it feels...safe.'
Advay kissed her cheek and closed his eyes. They had this moment and this moment was perfect. He held her tight as sleep finally consumed them both.
Chandini stood out on the terrace and sipped on her tea. Her body still ached, but it was a lot better than how it had felt in the morning. She was still finding it difficult to sit down on the chair. She blushed everytime it hurt. Adavy was right, her aches did remind her of their passionate night together. She sighed, but where was he? It was almost six in the evening, she had hardly seen Advay all day. Which man went to work on the day after their wedding, she frowned to herself as she smiled at the mangalsutra resting on her heart. She was a married woman now. It was going to take time to get used to it.
She stretched herself again, she had slept all day. For the first time in life she didn't have to worry about cooking and household chores. It had been a relaxing day and Murli hadn't let her step into the kitchen. She giggled to herself. No one had ever served her or looked after her. She had always tended to everyone else's needs. It felt strange to be waited upon, but it felt good, and thankfully Murli was like a brother who loved tending to her demands.
She looked out on to the courtyard as she waited for Advay to return. He had held her in his arms all morning and had woken her at nine before leaving for work. Memories of her sipping on her bed tea leaning against his chest while he had fed her breakfast flashed before her. She blushed, the way he tended to her was endearing. It was hard to believe he didn't care for her or didn't feel anything for her. She just wanted him to come home and hold her in his arms.
Murli handed her a plate of biscuits. She giggled at him.
"Kya hua Bhabhi?' He asked as he sat down at her feet and dunked his biscuit in his cup of tea.
"Murli, where is your Bhaiyya?' She asked shifting on her feet. "and why are you sitting on the floor.'
"He is at a meeting, should be back any minute.' Murli smiled, "I prefer sitting on the floor. It's just a habit.'
She nodded. They were meant to be visiting the kids and their families. She smiled to herself at their hospitality.
"I don't know what to wear tonight Murli,' She sighed.
Murli nodded, glad she had slipped into her new life with ease.
"Will you have a look at my sarees and help me decide, Murli?'
Murli choked on his tea. He was clueless when it came to women and their strange choices.
"If Shikha or Meghu was here I could have asked them,' She frowned, "I really don't know what to wear. Is it a reception? What am I meant to do?'
"Bhabhi,' He smiled, "these are extremely poor people. Please bear that in mind when you decide what to wear. Besides, I am sure Bhaiyya will help you choose.'
Tears stung her eyes at his words. How had she forgotten how poor those kids were? She shook her head, she was disgusted with herself. Had she become so shallow?
"I forgot Murli, I forgot,' She wiped her tears, "in an attempt to make the most of my marriage I forgot, there are those whose lives are far worse than mine.'
"Bhabhi.'
"It's okay Murli, thanks for reminding me.'
Murli sighed as he went back to sipping his tea. She looked sad and lost, like someone had turned off the lights inside her. Why did he have to upset her, she had been smiling until a few moments ago. But she was trying to make the most of her marriage, if only she knew who Advay was. He sighed again.
"Have long have you known your Bhaiyya, Murli?' She finally asked.
"Since I was seven or eight.'
She nodded. It seemed like Murli had known him all his life.
"I don't know anything about him Murli,' She sighed, "What does he like? What time does he take his coffee in the morning? What does he have for breakfast? Do you give him a packed lunch?'
"Why do you worry when I am here Bhabhi?'
"I am his wife now Murli,' She blushed.
"He has a sweet tooth, halwa is his favourite' Murli chuckled, "just make him halwa and feed him while smiling sweetly at him Bhabhi. I bet he'll be in heaven.'
Chandini blushed into a deep shade of red.
"Talking about me, are you?'
Chandini jumped out of her skin at his husky deep voice. He was home, her heart sang a symphony in her chest. Advay smiled at her while holding her gaze in his dark passionate eyes. Murli sprang to his feet and disappeared down the stairs, leaving Chandini fidgeting and blushing transfixed in Advay's gaze.
"I take my coffee at four in the morning, that's if I manage to get some sleep' He winked taking a step towards her on slow measured feet, "and another cup at half past four and again at five.'
She shivered as he closed the distance between them and gathered her in his arms. She lowered her gaze blushing to herself, she was married now...to him.
"But now since I have my sexy little pet who plans on keeping me up all night,' He whispered, "I might have to take my coffee at eight.'
She blushed to herself. What that when he had woken up in the morning?
"How are you feeling?' He asked raking his fingers through her soft silky hair.
She nodded with a smile.
"How was your day?' He asked, "have you been up to anything?'
"I slept for most of the day.' She rested her head on his chest, unable to believe how much she had slept all day.
"Did you?'
"Hmm,' She nodded, "I had a shower after you left, said my prayers... went to the temple with Murli.'
"Good.'
"Had a light lunch and then went back to sleep, I felt exhausted.'
"I am glad you have rested well.'
"It feels strange,' She giggled, for once she felt the pressure of running the house was lifted off her shoulder.
"What feels strange...being married to me?'
She blushed cuddling closer to him.
"Yes that,' She said, "and also Murli doesn't let me do anything.'
"Hmm... good.'
"Would you like a cup of coffee?' She asked only just realising she hadn't even bothered asking him if he wanted a drink. What was wrong with her? What kind of a wife was she?
"It's fine, Murli will get me one,' He said tightening his grip around her, "besides we don't have a kitchen, yet.'
"So, where is Murli preparing the lunches and the dinners.'
"Downstairs.'
"But,' She frowned, they weren't allowed downstairs.
"What?'
"I thought we couldn't use downstairs.'
"I own this Haveli Chandini,' He smirked, "you cannot go down, and no one is allowed upstairs...but Murli and I, we can use any part of this Haveli. It belongs to us. There are no rules for us.'
She nodded sighing to herself, of course the rules only applied to her and her family.
"What time did you wake up?' She asked.
"Eight.'
"Did you sleep well?'
"Hmm, I did...in a very long time.'
"Me too,' She whisperd, "I haven't relaxed this much...ever.'
"No,' He held her face in his hand and admired her, "Why is that?'
"I am always busy with house work,' She sighed, "usually at this time, I am busy prepping for dinner and making a third round of tea's and snacks for everyone.'
"Hmm,' He smiled, glad she wasn't slaving away anymore, glad he had taken her away from all the hard work Indrani forced upon her.
She smiled again as Murli handed Advay his cup of coffee and a plate of mixed bhajias.
"Kajal Maasi has made them,' He grinned sheepishly at a horrified Chandini. "it's a new recipe apparently.'
Advay nodded and held the plate towards Chandini while Murli decided to disappear down the stairs leaving the newly-weds to themselves.
Chandini took a deep breath and picked one of the bhajia's and waited for Advay, watching to see what his reaction was. Advay munched into what looked like a brinjal bhajia and ate it without batting an eyelid. Chandini bit into hers, another brinjal bhajia and spat it out as soon as it hit her tongue.
"It's raw...it's not cooked through,' She scrunched her face and quickly sipped on her tea to wash the rawness off her tongue. Advay chuckled as he continued eating. Chandini watched him in awe. Did he not realise how terrible they were?
"I said they are raw.' She said again.
"Are they?'
"Kajal Maasi is a terrible cook, she can't cook,' She blurted. "She has fried them on a high flame, the vegetable inside hasn't cooked through.'
"Is that why you were glaring at her in shock, when she offered to send us lunches and dinners.'
She nodded with a sigh. Fasting to death was better than eating her Maasi's inedible food.
"Can't you tell it's raw, it tastes disgusting?'
"I can,' He smiled, "but I will eat it, because she has made it for us.'
Chandini watched him in awe as he gobbled the almost inedible bhajia's without once twitching his face in disgust. What was this man made of? She thought.
"It is the intent that counts, don't you think?'
She nodded. True her Maasi had at least made an effort to make them something. She had been there throughout her wedding. She had risked her relationship with her sister. Her Maasi had truly fulfilled the role of her mother on the day of her wedding and she would forever be grateful to her for that.
"Why aren't you dressed?' He asked, glancing at his watch. "The kids will be here soon.'
"I will get dressed now.' She nodded. She only planned on wearing a simple cotton saree, given what Murli had mentioned to her earlier. "I am planning on a wearing a simple cotton saree.'
"Don't be silly,' He kissed her forehead, "you are the bride.'
"But... I don't know what to wear and these people ...they are poor.'
"It's okay,' He smiled warmly, "I have something for you.'
Chandini finally gathered herself and sat beside Advay in his car. Shikha sat at the front with Murli while the some of the kids squeezed to her right. She blushed at how closely pressed she was to his body. Her mother's kangan tinkled against her red bridal bangles. She hadn't planned on wearing any gold but Advay had insisted she wore her mother's bangles along with Dev's mother's necklace. The kids were smartly dressed yet again. She smiled warmly at muniya who sat on Shikha's lap and giggled and braided Shikha's hair.
Advay circled his arms around her and drew her closer to his body. She clutched on to the dupatta on top of her head. She had planned on wearing a simple cotton saree, but Advay had yet again surprised her with a beautiful saree. It was a baby pink chiffon saree with a simple sequinned border in gold throughout along with delicate pink and off-white roses printed all over the smooth fabric. She smoothed the pleats with her hand revelling in the smoothness of the rich fabric. It was a simple yet elegant saree, one she had paired with a navy blouse. She rested her head on his chest, it had been a relaxing day. The rest of her family were following them in Sid's car like the previous day. She hadn't imagined she would have a reception, but here she was, dressed like a bride again making her way towards their reception.
Advay stroked her cheek softly as he gazed down at her. He looked stunning as always in a navy kurta. She frowned only just realising his kurta matched her blouse. She giggled softly.
"What?' He asked.
"Your kurta matched my blouse.'
"I know,' He winked, "hence why I wore it.'
She gasped, he had matched his kurta with her on purpose.
"I am nervous,' She fidgeted with her dupatta.
"Why?'
"I rarely go out, am not sure what to expect.' She blushed, "and I never go out dressed like this.'
"You look beautiful.'
She blushed again at how deep and delicious his voice sounded.
"I am impressed you are able to sit,' He whispered.
"I am struggling, it hurts.'
He chuckled softly, just what he wanted to hear.
"Heyy...my little pet,' He murmured holding her gaze, "Did you think of me all day? Every time it hurt did it remind you of me and of what we did last night?'
She blushed again to a dark shade of scarlet. Advay smiled to himself content with her reaction.
Chandini gasped as soon as they arrived at the venue. A large pandal had been erected on the open ground held in place with bamboos that were wound together to give it the desired height. A thick red cloth covered the top but it was open from every side to the cool evening breeze that gently ruffled through her hair. She adjusted her dupatta on her head and walked hand in hand with a giggling Shikha, while Advay walked behind her chatting with her Mamaji. A few people scuffled around the area, while a few women checked her out from head to toe and giggled between themselves. Chandini blushed lowering her gaze, she checked her saree again, did she look funny? She wasn't sure, but she felt conscious of herself.
She jolted out of her trance as soon as loud music started blaring away the moment Advay stepped into the pandal. She clutched on to Shikha while stuffing her ears with her fingers. Her Baba followed them holding on to Sid, while Kajal and Meghu were chatting with the local women. Chandini smiled at Sid, he seemed like a thorough gentleman, she was glad to have made an acquaintance with him. Both Murli and Sid were gentlemen and she was glad they were a part of her life now, thanks to Advay.
A few chairs were arranged neatly under the pandal, while large blankets covered the rest of the area. Two large chairs upholstered in red and gold were arranged on a stage for the groom and the bride. Chandini felt a nervous flutter in her belly. This was a new place and she didn't know anyone other than the kids and her own family. Shikha helped her take her place on one stage on one of the chairs and quickly disappeared into the group of kids dancing to the blaring music. She sat fidgeting to herself, how had these people organised an event like this she wondered. But was deeply touched by their generous hospitality.
The music changed to the beat of Nachde Ne saare. She giggled as soon as the kids dragged Advay onto the open space in front of where she was sat and began dancing around him. Shikha too joined him and started dancing around him. Chandini giggled at how comical Advay looked with his stiff limbs as Shikha and Raghu forced him to break a leg. Advay smiled at her as he continued shaking his arms inelegantly. She sighed at how handsome he looked every time he smiled. His smile and his passionate kisses were surely her ruin, she sighed again. But he was her husband now.
She giggled again but shrieked as soon as Raghu dragged her to her feet and forced her beside Advay and music instantly changed to Tu..Tu...tu...tu meri...main tera hone laga... She blushed as Advay held her hand and gave her a twirl. She blushed again as the women flocked to watch the bride and the groom dance. Everyone started clapping and cheering them, and to her greatest shock Advay began singing "Tu Meri, main tera hone laga,' as he danced with his stiff limbs beside her. She giggled covering her face with her dupatta. This was the most adventurous thing she had ever done.
The music continued but Advay thankfully held her by her hand and led her towards her chair. The kids and her sisters and her Maasi too danced along with some of the grown-ups from the slums. Chandini looked around to where these kids lived. The pandal had been set up on an open ground. It was just beginning to get dark, and she could see tiny little shacks at a distance. Were those the slums where the kids lived? She wasn't sure, but wanted to see where they lived. Advay got down the stage again as he met with most of the people who were making their way into the pandal. It looked like he knew everyone personally as the men hugged him and some of the women chose to touch his feet while he protested. Chandini smiled to herself, the amount of love and reverence he had earned in the little time he had spent in this city was commendable.
Meghu finally sat beside her and took her hand into hers
"Missed you all day today Jiji,' She said choking on her tears.
"Me too,' Chandini sighed, "Who fed Baba?'
"Shikha did.'
She nodded, glad Shikha had taken on the role of looking after her father. She watched the smiling frame of her Baba as every one of the locals touched his feet in reverence. He blessed them and chatted with them. He was a Mahant after all.
"So, did Maasi do all the cooking today?' Chandini asked.
Meghu nodded in horror as Chandini giggled softly.
"Thankfully Murli Bhaiyya made extra Bhindi and dal and we were saved from the torture.'
Chandini smiled to herself, certain Murli had cooked more food on purpose, he knew what an incredible cook her Kajal maasi was.
"Where is Maa?'
"Pata nahi,' Meghu sighed, "she has been missing since last night. Don't know where she is or Shakun maasi or Ranjit mausaji is.'
"Hmm.'
"Will you speak to her when she returns?'
"Pata nahi Meghu,' Chandini sighed, "I want to speak to her, want to apologise for my decision. I am sure she is upset with me.'
"Hmm.'
Chandini felt panic grip her heart. How was she make up to her mother without violating Advay's rules? Maybe if she spoke to him. Or maybe if she spoke to her mother when he wasn't at home. She frowned to herself. Why did she need his permission to speak to her family members, to her own parents? This was one rule she wasn't comfortable with, she was going to have to discuss this with him.
"Oh, by the way, guess what Shikha did last night.'
"What?' Chandini gasped, now what had her little sister been up to?
"She asked Jiju to let us both upstairs in exchange to let him into your room last night.'
"What?' Chandini gasped out loud. Shikha had some nerve.
"And ...and,' Meghu widened her eyes, "he agreed to her request.'
"He did.' She shrieked in joy. Why hadn't he mentioned anything to her?
"I know,' Meghu clasped her hand tighter, "He said we can come and go as we please.'
"Oh, that's a relief,' Chandini gave Meghu a tight hug, heaving a sigh of relief. With Shikha and Mehgu with her she felt relaxed.
Chandini raised her gaze to Advay as he smiled and chatted to the locals. It seemed like he was home amidst his family. How well did he know these people? She wondered. Shikha ran up to them and squeezed in the space beside Chandini giggling to herself. It looked like she was in her element.
"You are having fun, aren't you?' Meghu giggled at her.
"I am, I know everyone here,' She chirped.
"Jiji, come let me introduce you to everyone,' Shikha dragged Chandini to her feet. Chandini stood up and arranged the pleats of her saree before adjusting the dupatta on her head. Her bottom was hurting her, she had wanted to stand up. Maybe it was a good idea to meet the families, given how well Advay knew them all. She had lived all her life in Allahabad yet didn't know any of the families of the kids she had known forever. She made her way towards where Advay stood surrounded by the families of the kids. He smiled holding her gaze as soon as Shikha stood her beside him.
"Jiji, this is Raghu's mother,' She pointed to a sweet lady in her early to mid-thirties. Chandini joined her hand in a Namaste, frowning to herself at how young she seemed. Raghu was her son? She frowned to herself.
"And this is Raghu's father.'
She nodded and smiled as Shikha introduced her to everyone. She gasped finally when she was introduced to Muniya's mother, she was almost the same age as herself, and had three kids. Chandini smiled at Muniya's brother, he looked healthy and happy. She admired the young lady again and the way she was surrounded by her children. Tears stung her eyes, she too would have had a few kids had Dev never left and married her as soon as she turned eighteen. She smiled to herself ruefully at the thought of the life she could never have. And now life had trapped her in a marriage with a man who didn't love her, a life where there was no future. She blinked her tears in vain.
"Are you okay?' Advay asked seeing how distraught she looked.
She nodded forcing a smile on her lips.
"Let's have dinner.' Raghu's father announced. The kids cheered and ran towards the stalls Murli had set up with the help of the women. She smiled to herself at how easily Murli too mingled with the locals. Cooking surely was his passion. No wonder he was a top chef. Was he wealthy? How wealthy was he? She frowned to herself. He seemed like a simple boy.
Chandini sat beside Advay as Shikha handed her a plate. She smiled, it had a simple stir fried bhindi, a dal, a simple kheer, roti and papad. Muniya placed a couple of pyaaz ke pakode on her plate. Chandini giggled at the cute little girl, dressed in a pink and navy anarkali today. She frowned, she wore the same colour as herself, was it a coincidence? She lifted her gaze to Advay to find him smiling at her with pride.
"What?' He asked.
"Muniya is dressed in the same colour as me.'
"Hmm,' He chuckled softly, "she wants to look like a bride.'
Chandini giggled. How sweet of her?
"Did you buy her the dress.'
"I did.' He smiled, "I bought them all new clothes.'
"Even the parents.'
"Everyone.'
She smiled warmly, he confused her. Who was he? What was he? Was he a monster or was he an angel? She sighed, he didn't make any sense to her.
She went back to eating their dinner, it was a simple meal but it was tasty and had a lot of heart to it. She blushed as soon as he held a pakoda up to her lips. She bit into the pakoda. Advay held her gaze as he ate the rest of the pakoda. She blushed again.
"Who paid for all this?' She finally whispered, given how poor the locals looked.
"Murli organised the pandal and the music,' He said, "the kids wanted music so he organised the speakers.'
She nodded.
"Is Murli wealthy?'
"He is.' Advay chuckled. "he owns two restaurants in London.'
"How wealthy is he?' She whispered as she continued admiring at his modesty. "Sorry I am just curious, given how modest he looks.'
"Let's put it this way,' Advay sighed, "if I hadn't been there that day, Murli would have bought you. No one could have matched his offer... That's how wealthy he is.'
"And only Murli could have matched my offer had he been bidding against me.'
Chandini gasped, yet he sat at her feet. What was this? Devotion or love? Was a love like this possible? Tears stung her eyes, it seemed it was possible. She watched Murli as he glanced at Advay every now and again, just to ensure he was comfortable.
"I don't understand him.' She sighed. Both Advay and Murli didn't make sense to her.
"He loves me,' Advay sighed, "and I would die for him.'
She nodded. Advay didn't have a family, but those around him loved him with passion. What was it about this man that made him so endearing.
"So, did he make this food?'
"No,' Advay sighed, "the food, everyone has contributed and cooked it for us.'
Chandini wiped the tears that trickled down her cheeks, they had hardly anything on them, yet they had prepared a hearty meal for everyone. She felt ashamed of herself and her privileged life.
"Have you seen the slums?' She asked.
"I have.'
She nodded, of course, he had, he knew these people like family. How did these people live in these conditions, she wondered?
"Have you?'
"No, but I have seen them from a distance.' She replied, "Maa would have never allowed it.'
He nodded.
"Why doesn't the government do something?' She sighed.
"In life, we must help ourselves Chandini,' He chuckled wryly, "if you wait for someone to come and sort your life, you will be waiting forever. Besides who is the government, a group of elected representatives of the people.'
She nodded.
"If everyone helps everyone else, then soon most of the problems will be resolved.'
She shifted in her chair uncomfortably.
"Does it hurt?' He asked.
She nodded blushing to herself.
"Would you rather stand up?'
She nodded.
Advay held her plate for her while she stood up and adjusted her saree. She finally followed him to where everyone else was sitting. Sid and Mamaji were in deep conversation, while Meghu held her Baba's plate for him. Kajal and Shikha giggled and chatted with the women. Chandini smiled to herself, her Maasi too was a simple down to earth woman. But her Maa, her Maa had always insisted that she was the oldest daughter of the Mahant and hence shouldn't mingle with the common folk. Maybe her Maa was wrong. It was the Mahant's duty to mingle with everyone and to discuss their problems. The temple and its charities could help these people. She lifted her gaze to find Sid smiling at her.
"How are you Chandini?' He asked. She nodded smiling back at him.
"Did he trouble you last night?' Sid glared at a smirking Advay, "did he keep you up till late?'
Chandini gasped turning a deep shade of red, what kind of questions were these? Her Mamaji was here. She lowered her gaze and took a deep breath.
"Tell him Chandini,' Advay circled his arms around her, "tell him if I troubled you last night, tell him if I let you sleep or not.'
She blushed to herself. She could hear her Mamaji chuckling, she just wanted to hide, wanted to disappear. But where? She kept her head low and ate her dinner in silence.
"So how soon can you push the paperwork?' Advay changed the subject much to her relief.
"It could take a month at the least,' Sid replied. Chandini lifted her gaze and listened to their conversations, clueless to what they were talking about.
"But once we make an offer, we will need Chandini to accept it.' Chandini flitted her confused gaze from between Advay and Sid. What offer? What paperwork.
"We are planning on building flats here for the slum dwellers,' Advay explained to her, "This entire land belongs to the temple.'
She gasped, did it? Why did she never know? She turned her questioning gaze towards Mamaji. Niru nodded at her.
"The plan is,' Sid said, "the collector has a slum development project going on at the moment. I have already spoken to him, he is a good friend of mine.'
Chadnini nodded.
"He will make a proposal and will make an offer to the temple to take over this land under the slum development scheme.'
She continued nodding, nothing made sense but it sounded like a good idea.
"Technically once there is an offer from the government, you have no alternative but to hand them your property,' Sid continued, "but in many cases the owners of the property are not happy with the remuneration they receive and they cause delay by bringing in a stay and by challenging the offer.'
"So, if you were to accept the offer as soon as we receive one,' Advay added, "then we can start developing this area and can build homes for these homeless families.'
Chandini looked between the two men confused, she didn't know what to say. She was going to have to ask her mother. She had never decided anything of her own accord ever. Besides the property belonged to Dev and his family, how could she decide for Dev?
"These properties don't belong to me,' She said weakly, "Besides Maa won't agree.'
"You are the heir to the properties,' Advay snapped, "you will sign where I ask you to, do I make myself clear?'
She studied Advay with intent. Was this a ploy? Was he after the temple properties like her mother had warned her? She held his gaze, shivering to herself at the flicker of anger she saw in his eyes.
Niru Mamaji patted Advay on his back gently. He took a deep breath and looked away. She didn't trust him enough to accept his proposal. It was still about her Maa and her approval.
"Banno, by law you must accept a government offer,' Mamaji explained to her in a calm voice, "The government is the ultimate authority and if they want to claim a piece of land, they can and they will. You can only disagree upon the amount of money they are willing to compensate. But you cannot stop the government from taking over a piece of land, especially if it for welfare reasons.'
Chandini nodded, still unsure if whether she wanted to sign whatever paperwork the men were talking about without her mother's approval.
"But how can we sell,' She squeaked, "there is a stay.'
"You are not selling Chandini,' Sid smiled at her, "the government is taking over the land. All the land belongs to the people of the city, so if it for the betterment of the people, the government can lay claim to it. Am I making sense?'
She nodded weakly.
"Don't worry,' Sid smiled at her again, "there is still time for that. At least another month, enjoy your reception tonight, we can discuss later.'
She nodded, that was all she could do. Enjoy her now, and right now Advay looked furious. She sighed, how was she meant to make up to him? She offered to take his empty plate once they had finished their dinner. But instead Advay took her plate and disposed it in the recycling area. Mamaji stroked her hair gently.
"He is a good man, he wants to help these people' He said softly, "Learn to have faith in your husband.'
She nodded. Advay handed her a glass of water as he stood beside her. She raised her gaze to his again, he didn't seem angry anymore. It would take time for her to understand him and to read his body language.
"Jiji, come let me show you our house,' Raghu suddenly grabbed her by her hand and dragged her. Chandini looked up at Advay unsure of what he wanted her to do. He nodded at her.
"We are coming too,' Shikha and Meghu followed Raghu.
"I have been here with Murli Bhaiyya,' Shikha chirped next to Chandini as they made their way towards the shacks. She had seen it from a distance and wondered how people lived in such tiny shacks. But today she would get to see how these people really lived in their slums. She had loads of questions. How did they all sleep in such a tiny space? Did they have toilets? Where did they have a shower?
Chandini gasped aloud as soon as she reached the slums. Raghu held a thick plastic sheet up for her that covered the shack he called home. There was no door. A tin sheet was nailed together to form a ceiling and walls and held in place with sheets of plastic and rags. His mother smiled at her warmly and invited her in. She gasped again at how small the shack was, it was twice the size of her bed. Where did the family sleep and she had a little baby in her arms? Shikha held her arms out for the baby and cuddled her, while Chandini watched her in awe. Her sister was so different to her. Hence why she got along with Advay so well, she thought.
There were a number of shacks stacked beside each other. She felt ashamed of herself for the kind of saree and jewellery she had decked herself in. She should have just worn the simple cotton saree. Some more women gathered around her and gawked and giggled at her.
"You both look good together,' One of the older women said.
"You are a lucky woman to have found a husband like Jijaji,' Another woman said.
She blushed to herself. Was she lucky? She didn't know. Lucky or otherwise she was married to him now.
"Where do you all sleep?' She asked innocently.
"We sleep out in the open.' Raghu chuckled and during the monsoon we sleep under the bridge, he pointed towards the railway bridge in the distance. It was a large bridge, enough to provide shelter from the rains.
"Here, please have some tea.' Raghu's mother handed her a cup. Tears welled Chandini's eyes at her hospitality as she took the worn-out cup from her hand.
"Where do you cook and wash?' She asked. She had never ventured out of her Haveli, was clueless to how the other half of the world lived. The slums were just a twenty-minute drive from their palatial Haveli, yet she had never realised how difficult life was for a lot of people.
"We wash there at that open drainage at the end of the road,' She pointed towards a foul-smelling gutter.
Didn't these people have a mosquito problem? Chandini wondered, as she sipped on the tea. It was nothing but hot boiling water with a couple of spoons of sugar and tea. She sighed, it hardly had any milk in it. Unlike the strong milky ginger tea, she sometimes made herself all day. But the smile the women wore was priceless. Their love and sincerity was heart-warming.
"What happened to your face?' Chandini gasped at a young girl giggling before her. She was a little older than Shikha and her face was badly bruised with a black eye.
"Her husband did that to her.'
Chandini gasped again. Her who? She squinted at the black beads the girl wore around her neck, she was married, how old was she?
"How old are you?'
"Nineteen.'
"Why did he?' Chandini choked on her tears, she was a beautiful girl with big black eyes and a bright smile. Why would anyone want to do that to her?
"He sold me to another man,' She said casually.
"He is a drunkard, an alcoholic,' Another woman added, "will sell anyone to pay for his drinks...will even sell his mother...but thankfully his mother died many years ago.'
The women laughed.
Chandini gasped shivering to herself. Men who drank always left her unsettled and here she was married to a man who was always down a few drinks. But Advay was not like this woman's husband, she reminded herself. He was extremely possessive of her, would never let anyone touch her.
"So why did he hit you?' Meghu fumed in anger.
"I didn't want to go with the other man, hence why.'
"But how could he ... he is your husband.' Meghu frowned in disbelief.
"He doesn't care,' another woman sighed, "he is a jerk. He just wants money for his drinks.'
Chandini assessed the giggling girl again. She looked happy, carefree, how? Did her uncertain future with a disgusting man not scare her?
"Why don't you leave him?' Shikha asked.
"He is my husband, I can't leave him.' The girl giggled again at Shikha's silly question.
Chandini smacked her silly sister's head gently. Women didn't have much of a choice in this city. She was better off married and abused than single and available to any man to lay his hand on her.
"Come on Jiji,' Shikha glared, "I am sure she can get a job and live independently.'
"I work,' The girl said, "I am a cleaner at the shopping centre. But I cannot leave my husband. My parents will kill me.'
The other women nodded in agreement.
"Besides I have three younger sisters, who will marry them if I was to end up a divorce?'
Chandini felt a stab in her heart. How true, she thought to herself. She glanced between Shikha and Meghu, shivering to herself. What would happen to their future if she was to end up a divorce in six months' time? She shivered again, maybe she had made a mistake in agreeing to marry Advay. She had not considered her sisters' future, maybe she was better off married to PP, at least he had offered a long-term relationship. She trembled to herself. Had she destroyed her sisters' life along with hers?
"But if he is abusing you then you should go to the police.' Shikha continued.
"But maybe she has consented to it.' Chandini said.
All the women laughed out at Chadnini, like she was an idiot.
"Who consents to getting trashed like this?' One of the older women continued laughing at her foolishness. "who wants to get hurt and end up with a black eye.'
Chandini frowned, she had. She had agreed to everything he had wanted to do her.
"Jiji,' Another girl said, "you are lucky you are married to Jijaji, hence why you say such things... we have no other option but to live with men like these.'
Chandini sighed ruefully, if only they could see the state of her backside. Her bruises were hidden away, unlike the other girl whose husband had the guts to punch her face and blatantly declare to the world the kind of atrocities he was capable of. But Advay, he had made it clear he was a sadist who enjoyed inflicting pain on women... on her and she has seen the dark lust in his eyes as he had spanked her the previous night. He had revelled in her pain.
"But what if he keeps hurting her like this?' Meghu frowned assessing the bruise on the young sweet girl.
"Jijaji and Sid Bhaiyya have warned him,' Raghu's mother said, "don't worry, everyone respects and fears Jijaji in this area. He doesn't have the courage to look Jijaji in the eye.'
The girl giggled nodding at Raghu's mother.
Chandini glanced in surprise between Raghu's mother and the young giggling girl. Advay had warned her husband, but why? What a hypocrite she thought to herself? He was a self-proclaimed sadist, yet here he was protecting other women against their abusive husbands. She let out a sigh, his rules were always different when it came to her. She knew that for a fact now.
"My husband, he came back last night and apologised to me,' The girl said, "begged me not to complain to Jijaji. He trembles at the mention of Jijaji's name.'
"Jijaji slapped him a few times, didn't he?' One of the older women said, "I am sure he must have peed his pants.
Everyone laughed again, but it was the young girl's laughter that touched Chandini the most.
"What is your name?' Chandini asked the young vivacious girl again.
"Pushpa.'
"Do you have any children Pushpa?'
"I am eight weeks pregnant,' She blushed, "hence why I refused to go with the other man.'
"Has he sold you before?'
"He has.'
Chandini gasped in horror. Tears stung her eyes as she studied the girl with intent.
"Do you know whose child it is?' She finally mustered the courage to ask.
"It's my child.' Pushpa answered her confidently. Chandini nodded as he wrapped her arms around the young blushing girl and hugged her tight. Of course, it was her child. It belonged to no one but her. Mother and child, the only true relationship, the only true love that there is. Tears finally streamed down her face. Today she had met someone who was far worse than herself. It was time she buckled up and faced her life with the same positive smile with which Pushpa did.
