Chapter 13
Mumbai
"You are an uncaring mother and an unfeeling human being and nothing you do or say is going to change that fact! Advay was furious at her actions. He didn't have an ounce of regret for having uttered those words. She earned it after all, he thought sarcastically, going back to reading the message she just received. He stepped into the shower and turned it on full blast.
She was the worst kind of human being he was ever unfortunate to have come across; a person who chose not to recollect her past actions and didn't have even a tiny bit of remorse for what it triggered. The death of his loving parents and him becoming an orphan overnight. He still relived those horrific events like it happened yesterday. No amount of psychiatric help could erase what he saw or experienced that day.
His mother's agonizing cries for help while she was being burnt alive was still ringing in his ears and his father being stabbed multiple times mercilessly by the angry mob were imprinted in his brain and there hasn't been a day where he prayed to god to turn back time and prove that all this was just a nightmare and nothing more.
The only way he could combat his fears and pain was by fueling his rage; rage at his childhood friend for having lied blatantly and anger for having given away their secret spot which made him lose his brother too.
The vow to never forgive her inhumane doings kept him going. She didn't care for him then nor did she think about him now or reminisce their friendship for even a fraction of a second, he noted. She deserved hell and he wasn't going to let this opportunity slip away. After all, his wife herself has presented him with a golden opportunity; a second chance at exacting revenge since the first didn't seem to douse the inner fire for revenge, he realised.
And he would relish giving her a taste of her own medicine. But he had to plan better this time; it looked like the initial strategy of humiliation and social shame wasn't sufficient enough. She has come back again asking for more and he would definitely give it; he was generous that way, he smirked.
He stepped out of the shower and dried himself, all the while wondering what he should do next. But before that he had a set of things he had to remember at any cost; Stay in Nani's good books, keep Dev at bay, never fall for Chandini's innocent act and get fooled, never forget that she was and is a gold digger and totally untrustworthy.
He did observe THE key point in her behaviour though; that she had a penchant for tolerance when it came to her maa and family. He knew that she was here for them and that she would endure anything for them; he had a glimpse of it when in Allahabad, but now was the time he wanted to put it to test to check the limit.
He thought that if he separated her from them then she would endure all the heartache that he did during his teens; but then again thought against it when presented with an opportunity to defame her entire family. But that didn't seem to satisfy him either, now that he thought about it. He was going to derive immense satisfaction in torturing her day in and day out with her having no clue as to the reason behind it.
And when the day comes, he would plan his reveal in such a way that she would be too shocked to even think and run away from him of her own will. And that would be the day his parents' soul would rest in peace, he nodded in determination as his eyes brimmed with unshed tears. He blinked to keep them at bay and proceeded to the bedroom to change.
There was a knock on the door just as he was fastening his watch. It was Murli, "Bhaiyya, Nani is calling you. She asked me to inform you that she has something important to discuss with you.
That worried him making him wonder if Chandini disclosed all that happened the previous night. "I'll be there in a few minutes. He responded lost in thought.
He hurriedly brushed his wet hair, grabbed his jacket, keys, and his mobile and strode out of the room. He could hear Adi giggling as he made his way towards the breakfast table. To his utter disbelief it was Chandini who was telling a humorous tale and feeding Adi his breakfast, while Pooja stood awestruck and his Nani had a pleasant smile plastered across her face.
He frowned observing the scene in front of him. For any layman it would appear as if his wife did genuinely bond with his six year old nephew; but the reality was anything but that. But he had to keep up pretenses for nani's sake and he faked a smile and cleared his throat.
But that didn't seem to cause any sort of distraction especially for his wife. She continued her story with an amusing tone and a silly expression that had Adi chuckling again.
Pooja came and stood beside him and said, "Did you notice the change in Adi, bhaiyya? There is something about Chandini that attracts Adi to her. And she is so gentle with him too. And of course has a knack in getting him to eat his food without a fuss. Look there, he has finished his second paratha. She exclaimed, excited.
He wanted to growl in anger; a mother who abandoned her baby was playing mami to an innocent one and fooling his entire family. He had to do something to get his wife away from Adi. He took firm strides towards him and settled in the chair beside his wife as the ones beside Adi were occupied by his nani and maasi. He placed an arm across her chair and leaned forward making his cheek touch her hair, to wish, "Happy morning, Adi! to his nephew who faced Chandini.
Adi's eyes lit up seeing his mama and he responded "Good morning, CM! cheerfully. Adi raised his palm in anticipation of the special handshake the two of them shared.
Chandini made a move to get up but Advay foiled her plan. He could sense her restlessness and decided to take advantage of it. He placed his chin on her shoulder deliberately and proceeded to shake hands with his nephew. She squirmed in her seat and Advay enjoyed making her uncomfortable with his presence.
He ruffled Adi's locks and the action brought his chest in contact with her back. He sensed her breath catch in her throat and couldn't help giving her a sideways glance. She smelled of lavender and he inhaled its sweetness without his knowledge.
"CM, you need to teach mami the special handshake too! Adi demanded, catching his attention. He looked at Adi and said, "So soon, Adi? You've hardly known her for a couple of days!
"But mami is my friend since day one and she has been your friend even before that, right? Then what's wrong in teaching her? enquired Adi innocently.
By now Advay could feel his wife trying to nudge his arm and moving to stand. It distracted him and he chose not to rebuke what Adi stated; it would cause unnecessary discussion in Nani's presence.
He moved his digits gradually down her arms and placed it on the back of her palms. He heard felt her tremor and looked into her questioning orbs. He found fury and confusion behind it and ignored it to once again place his chin, this time in the crook of her neck and proceeded to mould her hands in a bid to teach her the handshake.
He was unaware of the uncomfortable glances being thrown his way by Pooja and Shilpa. He turned his head ever so slightly his breath moving her locks at her nape. "And this is how the secret special handshake works. He whispered gently into her ear, completing his tutorial.
Adi's excited applause brought him out of his trance and he straightened himself a wee bit, not breaking the physical contact. He was startled at what just transpired; he shook himself out of his daze and brought his focus back on the issue at hand. He didn't wait a minute longer to get his veiled threat across to his wife.
He held her upper arms and spoke softly under his breath so that only she could hear, all the while smiling for his attentive audience, "I don't know what kind of games you are playing, Chandini, but stay the hell away from my nephew! Should anything happen to him, you will see the worst of me! And I'm way past issuing warnings; you will experience the effect directly henceforth for all your wrong moves.
He turned towards his breakfast not noticing Chandini fumble and make excuses to go to kitchen. He was too engrossed in cursing himself mentally for not being able to control the undeniable attraction that he felt for his wife.
If he ever wished to get rid of her, he needed to keep his hands off her, he thought furiously. He turned around to adjust his chair only to find his maasi glaring at him. He quickly exchanged pleasantries with his nani and enquired why she wanted to meet him.
"Chandini expressed her wish to visit the Shiv Mandir here. Can you please take her to the one on the way to your office? nani explained.
Advay's ears perked up listening to it. Wow, God really did present him with the best opportunity and that too so soon, he smirked cruelly.
"Sure, Nani, why not he replied, the first of his many torturous plans already taking shape in his mind.
