Chandni somehow managed to haul herself out of the bed at the ungodly hour of five thirty in the morning; stared at her swollen and sleep deprived eyes in the mirror and then proceeded to go the kitchen. This had become a routine of sorts. She would then make herself a steaming cup of tea and would head to the terrace where she would observe the daily routines of the people of Banaras. She felt so disconnected lately, as if she was fading, piece by piece. The incident in Allahabad had scarred her irrevocably, his betrayal still fresh in her mind.
She dreamt of him almost daily, unable to get his wretched yet handsome face out of her mind. All the dreams would start the same. He would carry her to their bed, bridal style and make love to her. He would then place his warm palm on her slightly swollen belly and nuzzle her neck, whispering sweet nothings into her ear.
And the saddest part was, was that she almost believed it was true. Even though the dream was a daily occurrence and would inevitably be shattered in the morning, she was always fooled by the dream. Perhaps her dreams were as delusional as she was, with regard to Dev. She felt as if her whole life was a series of illusions, a delicately built sand castle that had been brutally destroyed with the onset of the turbulent waves. All her memories with Dev were now tainted, his betrayal had absolutely shattered her trust, but Chandni was not so weak,so as to let the absence of a man destroy her life.
She had now realised the importance of living for herself. With a baby on the way, it was imperative that she searched for a source of income. Although she knew she had the full support of her Mama and sisters, she had made it a point to engage in some sort of work, to keep herself occupied and at the same time ensure a steady source of income. Although her degree and credentials prevented her from pursuing a full-fledged nine to five, corporate job, she had managed to secure a well-paying job at an NGO aimed at empowering women. Although she still had bouts of depression, things were slowly but surely improving for her. Her peace would come, however, when she would finally manage to flush out his memories from her system. A feat, which as of now, seemed impossible to achieve.

Once the breakfast table had been set, Shikha headed towards the terrace, to call her sister and force-feed her once again. Although Chandni was getting better as the days passed, her condition was still dismal. The two sisters and their Mama were increasingly worried about Banno's health. Although she was about to complete her first trimester, her diet was visibly non-existent and she had dropped considerable weight, putting both her child's and her life at risk. What was worse, was their lack of finances. Although, all the members of the Vashishth clan were currently drawing an income, it still wasn't sufficient to meet their expenditure and at the same time, provide Chandni jiji the medical treatment that she desperately required.
It was due to this very reason that Meghna, Shikha and Neeraj made the conscious decision to inform Dev about the impending pregnancy. Although the two sisters were opposed to the idea at first, their sister's fragile condition made them reconsider their decision. Shikha still remembered yesterday's conversation, Dev's words to her Mama fresh in her mind.
"Main un dono ke bina nahi reh sakta, he choked, his voice quaking with unshed tears and monumental guilt. "Main kya karoon, Mama. Woh toh meri shakal bhi nahi dekhna chahti hogi.
Shikha had almost felt bad for him.Almost. And then she remembered the torture that he had put Jiji through, and came to the conclusion that he deserved every moment of pain and loss that he was was experiencing. What surprised her further, was his insistence to come to Banaras immediately and take Chandni back to Mumbai as soon as possible. However, Mama managed to convince him that any sort of hurry wouldn't yield positive results and he needed to be patient. He needed to convince her, not coerce her.
Chandni, however, was still blissfully unaware that her child's biological father was aware of her predicament and was on his way to Banaras to convince her to return home with him.

Once her sisters and Mama had practically force-fed her, they all left for their respective jobs. Although Chandni had to reach the NGO at 10, her Mama told her to take rest. He was right, perhaps. She was feeling particularly fatigued today and was completely drained of any sort of energy. The biggest perks of working at an NGO was the sympathy that they extended towards their employees, a characteristic which was hard to come by in the corporate world. Once she had informed her employer about her current situation, she had wasted no time in offering Chandni a job with a decent package. There was no doubt that Chandni was a diligent worker. In the few days that she had worked in the organisation, she had managed to impress her seniors with her work ethics and hard-work despite being pregnant. Hence when Chandni requested for an off, her employer was more than willing to comply. Once Chandni had informed her employer, she went for her bath. Simple tasks left her feeling thoroughly exhausted. She decided to sleep it off and had almost tucked herself in, when suddenly the doorbell rang.
"Who can it be?, Chandni thought to herself as she advanced towards the door.
~
On the other side of the door stood a man, willing to go to hell and back, to convince his wife and the love of his life to return home.
