Hello friends,
Weekend update below. Enjoy!
Drabble 10: "It is a capital mistake to theorize in advance of the facts
"The victim was struck by a blunt object at the back of his head, due to which he fell on another object, hit his head a second time. Before being hit by the object the victim was drugged with sleeping pills. We also found a huge amount of alcohol in his system at the time of his death.
Anika spoke quickly but clearly for a while explaining the post mortem results to Omkara and Gauri.
"So, he died because of the blow on his head? Gauri asked.
"No. the blow to his head wasn't fatal. He would have survived that. It's the fall after that which gave him an open injury and he bled to death. Anika clarified, "Of course, the amount of sleeping pills and alcohol in his system would have rendered him groggy.
"So, Mr. Arora's death could be accidental? Omkara enquired.
"No. The autopsy reveals that it is definitely murder. Mr.Arora bled to death after he was hit on his head. Anika concluded. "And yes, Detective Sharma, the samples you collected from the scene of crime after forensics team left has been tested. The hair belongs to a female, middle-aged perhaps. And the fabric sample is from a cotton saree perhaps, we have looked at it under the microscope and tested its chemical make-up.
Gauri and Omkara looked at each other knowingly. The case was finally reaching a conclusion. They knew who both those things belonged to, what remained was just to prove it.
"Here doctor, would you be so kind to test these samples against the ones you already have? Gauri held two small, transparent plastic bags; one of them holding a piece of cloth and other, it was difficult to tell what was inside.
"Well done, Holmes, for getting these. How did you manage? Omkara was pleasantly surprised.
"I sneaked around the room and picked up the hair sample from Prof Siddiqui's chair after she got up and cut a very tiny piece of her saree when we were walking out with her, she looked distracted and did not notice. Gauri answered smugly.
"Thank you DI Sharma. Doctor, would you be able to tell us the time of the death. Omkara enquired.
"The forensics investigation and looking at the temperature and decay of the body when it was brought in, I would say, Mr. Arora died sometime between 9 and 10 pm that night. Anika suggested.
"Thank you doctor. Omkara nodded.
"You are welcome Detective Oberoi. Let me walk you out. Anika smiled back. Gauri excused herself, she wanted to look at the forensics evidence once again whilst Omkara and Anika walked out.
Once they were outside the laboratory, Anika could not contain herself.
"OMG. So, you have a new partner now Omkara. I like DI Sharma a lot. She seems to be very intelligent and how pretty. My, my. Be sure to keep your eyes on the case. Anika was back to her real self, informal and warm outside the confines of her office. She had known Omkara for a few years now.
"Nothing like that Bhabhi, we are taking this partnership slowly. Let's see. Omkara blushed a little, when he noticed Gauri emerge from the lab.
She walked to them and moved towards Anika.
"It's a real pleasure to meet you Doctor Anika... she tried to think if she knew her full name.
"Solanki. I am Shivaay's wife. A real pleasure to meet you too. Looking forward to working on many cases together, Ms. Sharma. Anika shook and hand and completed the sentence for her.
"Likewise. Gauri smiled.
"If the whole introduction session is done with you two, Miss. Sharma, can we leave? We have work to do. Omkara intervened.
Anika watched the back of two figures leave, walking side by side, thought about years ago and smiled,' now this is interesting. I need to speak with Shivaay about this.'
Mrs. Arora was sitting up; the nurse was feeding her soup when they entered the room. They decided to wait outside and go through the facts so far, until she was finished with her dinner. They agreed that all the evidence so far was pointing towards one person Prof. Siddiqui. They just needed a motive and opportunity now.
"How are you feeling now Mrs. Arora? Gauri inquired.
"I am ok. Thank you. Mrs. Arora still sounded feeble and looked fragile. The doctor had informed them that she was healing well and would be discharged in a day or two, but Omkara had requested the hospital to keep her in until the case was solved. They could keep an eye on her here and she would be safe.
"Good to know Mrs. Arora. Would you shed some light on why you tried to kill yourself? Omkara came straight to the point whilst avoiding a disapproving glance from Gauri.
Mrs. Arora was taken aback. She looked troubled.
"I...I... she was struggling to speak.
"Would you like some water? Omkara poured her a glass from the jug on the adjoining table.
"No, it's ok. I am fine. I wasn't feeling like myself, after hearing of my husband's death. That blow to his head, it must have been horrific. Mrs. Arora
Gauri and Omkara exchanged glances, both realising something at the same time.
"Were you on good terms with your husband, during the last weeks of his life? Gauri asked.
"What do you mean? Yes. We were like, normal husband and wife. I loved him.
"Why are you lying Mrs. Arora. We know all was not right. Did your husband abuse you physically? Did he raise his hands? Gauri was not letting this go, she wanted it out bcoz she wanted to help her, but when she got no reply from the other side, she continued.
"How were your husband's relations with his colleagues? Did you talk a lot about his work? Gauri asked.
"It was all right. We didn't talk about his work at home that much. Mrs. Arora was sounding more elusive with every answer.
"You need to be careful about how and what you answer Mrs. Arora. Your answers might work against you. Omkara thought it wise to warn her.
"I told you, I don't know much about his work and colleagues?
"Aren't they your colleagues too? Weren't you doing research in the same college, under Prof. Siddiqui? And you were Prof. Arora's student too before that? Gauri was getting annoyed, it was as if Mrs. Arora had partial amnesia, or she thought them to be fools, did she really think she will get away with this?
Mrs. Arora suddenly started shaking vehemently after hearing Gauri's questions. She now had tears running down cheeks and she was crying loudly, as in in frenzy.
"There is no point in all this now. It is true. I admit, I killed my husband. she shouted.
